  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Why is everyone still throwing around "3K for $3K"?

We new it'd be more expensive than this about 2 years ago...

The last price estimate was from Ted at NAB (I think), I believe he said it'd MAYBE be around $6K.

But lets face it...it was pretty obvious there was gonna be a price increase when this announcement was announced. Nothing gets bigger and better without requiring more $$$...

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but this shouldn't really come as a surprise to everyone.

Both RED and Canon will release high quality cameras both in their own right, cameras best suited for each individual with different needs and budget's, that doesn't make Canon more inferior just different, RED is Awesome but we should respect all company's and the service they all provide to all of us, at the end of the day there will be a camera out there that is the right fit for each individual in the industry =)

taking all things into consideration
3k scarlet ready to shot 12 000
+ Red mag 64gb 950
+ exstra battery x 200
+ Mounting plate 150

The Price of a Dream.
hallo . so far, it is the best deal, ever .

My biggest concern with all these changes is glass.

The fixed option feels like it is disappearing (hopefully i'm just being anxious). If the fixed lens has gone, then that means going PL or getting a $2k Canon mount and a few $k in Canon lenses (I think Canon might be happy on Nov 3rd, even if RED smoke their camera launch!).

Oh well, if I can't afford it, I can't afford it. Simple enough.

Good luck with the launch, alot of people will be happy... no matter what.

I'm expecting around $12K for a body only package, that's probably cause I keep anticipating the arrival of an Epic-S renamed Scarlet again.

If the price for a body goes above $15K, I will have to really stretch my budget, considering all the accessories and glass that is necessary for a proper working package

Exciting days/nights. As a film enthusiast, I can't wait to get myself familiar with the RED workflow: raw, r3 d, RCX-P, Alchemy and all that stuff. And with the new & even better Scarlet. Only a few days left.

Jim, the problem here is that the previous three years of scarlet build up have all been towards to a camera that those of us currently using DSLRs and HVXs can afford. You were the one who gave us our preconceived notions about this camera. I'm not saying there'll be anything wrong with scarlet. I'm sure it's every bit as amazing as you're claiming it to be. I'm sure I'll want one. I'm sure millions will want one. But I'm also pretty sure plenty of people will be pissed because they can't afford one. It doesn't matter how good it is, if it's over 10K then most of the people who've been following scarlet wont be able to get one. Which is a shame because you've been teasing the sub 10K crowd pretty bad for a long time now. And we don't want to go to canon because you convinced us raw, and hi res and all sorts of things 3 years ago. Everything since then has just been to tie us over till scarlet. Which you told us we could afford...
I'm sure it's amazing and I hope I can buy one.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about it too :)

Like Edward said, it will probably be every bit as awesome as you claim Jim. But there's no denying the teasing the DSLR crowd received...

I've had a decent idea of what was coming and Jim just confirmed it.

Also Jim is right, what's gonna come for the price point is unmatched. Some may not like it as they were hoping for a sub $10k knee slapper but this is about buying into the RED ecosystem, not breaking bottom lines of other companies. This about tools for the job and I'm not being a fanboy here.

Canon's camera will be a great camera for what it does (seriously, not slagging Canon) but in a price vs performance matrix Scarlet will win. As long as you need that performance vs. the other camera(s) prices then you will win too. Otherwise there are plenty of great options for everyone so no one should be complaining about camera choices at this point.

The only thing Canon may have over RED at this point is volume and infrastructure but you you can't really compare the 2 companies in that regard.

Excited to be there at RED HQ next week.

You people who really think scarlet will be anywhere south of 10k or even 14k are living in a pipedream and no offense but you don't undefstand technology or its trends very well...
I for one fully support and endorse red staying professional and low end of the high end as opposed to high end of the low end...so to speak

It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Jim
hahaha  who said u should say to him all these years wow jim.. u r so generous!! yadda yadda

I welcome this price raise in full confidence with Red.

I'm one of those who were more looking at Epic-S than the Scarlet (considering their original specs), but if Scarlet is now a camera that can match Epic in normal conditions (no crazy framerate, maybe no hdrx) with less horsepower, then Red gets a very consistent product line, and i'm all for it.

I might not be able to buy a scarlet package on november 3rd if we're talking about a 12k body or even camera with fixed lense, as there's at least 5-6K of accessories to add to the list, but that will be the camera i'll work hard to get in the next few months.
