  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

The basic camera may come in lower than that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit higher. But, what about everything else? SSDs, batteries, glass, filters, accessories, etc, etc, etc,. It's gonna be hard for anyone to get up and running for under $10K unless of course you already some gear.

Which you told us we could afford...
I'm sure it's amazing and I hope I can buy one.
Edward, how much free time do you have? How long would it take you to earn $50 thousand dollars? This applies to anyone out there, how would you raise an extra $50 thousand in the next twelve months? Can you form a film production company and get Fifty investors to each contribute One thousand?

red prices are always affordable and fair.
try to get the scarlet from another manufactorer.
you can be sure the same cam would cost 40000,
even though we dont know the specs yet.
but i am ready to bet that NO camera in the sub 40k range besides the one will
give you a clean, fat 2k Master.

We'll se what will happen but a I would expect Scarlet to be:

S35, 4K with the options of PL, Canon or Nikon smart mount from Nov3rd.
One of the cool things with the 2/3 fixed was the motorized lens with with lots of great features. Same thing was realized with Canon mount and lenses - so much work has been invested in characterization of the canon lenses -it would be a shame if all of new RED cameras couldn't profit from this work.
If the fixed is gone, it makes so much sense that canon and nikon lenses are available and practical for use with Scarlet.

Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Jim

I wasn't expecting 3k for 3k - but I was hoping for something 8-10kish. I think I'm going to be disappointed.

Man, you try and go cold turkey for the weekend and then this thread posts and I diving off my couch, injecting REDuser back into me as fast as I can consume it. Let me get some sleep and work done PLEASE JIM!

Exciting stuff.

Though I understand the fear and really empathise with the guys with smaller budgets available. I think the - you can always shoot with other cams and art can still be made - is certainly true and pragmatic, but it is no matter how well intentioned - A) a fact that people are all undoubtedly aware of - and B) highly unlikely at this particular point in time to make anyone feel any better - and C) With specs and price still unknown, not yet the time.

We all know that people with small budgets currently have high hopes - for good reason - that with the Scarlet release they can finally join the RED family. A high price point, would see a lot of heart broken people. So I think regardless of what happens, out of respect for each other, we should all tread very softly on everyone else's dreams. The "plenty of fish in the sea" lines do have their place, but it requires timing and a gentle hand if you don't just want to see the person screaming back at you... I DONT WNAT ANYONE ELSE!!! I WANT SCARLETTT!!!!

HOWEVER! As far as I can tell, Scarlet hasn't definitively packed her 10K + bags up and left the apartment yet! So I don't think anyone should lose heart or go on a bender at this point, unless you were still hoping for 3k for 3k, which would be just mental after all the Ted tours.

I think without genuinely "knowing" the specs, the only rational way to take this latest statement by Jim is that it will "probably" be 7K + but that does not mean post 10K is guaranteed or anything else. Pro does not mean it must now be the epic S. I think the only thing we can say it definitively means, is that RED just don't believe genuine pro is possible for 3k. 7K+ is all we can say seems likely - from Ted can clearly get by as a pro price point -
and is worth noting against the old scarlet pricing as "being more expensive" If you take Jim's statements and pair them with a 7-8-9K Scarlet release, they would certainly still be compatible - with "pro" and "more expensive." And probably to be fair, more compatible with earlier comments such as - never ever out of backorder.

All that said, a re - re branded epicS with an F3 placed price point would not surprise me at all either. I once thought this made the most sense. But we still certainly do not know that this is now the case - as some are now confidently declaring.

Just my thoughts, could be wrong, but hoping it might be a little balm for those who are a bit understandably freaked out that they may have just been told that they are going to be priced out of their dream cam just now.

Best Wishes

Lliam

Given the recent HUGE advances in software/firmaware/workflow since Epic was at this point in near-release, I'm expecting a mind-blowing pro user interface, (mabye using IPAD?) and some other surprises not even seen yet on the forum here.
Still hoping for a basic-wheels 3-lens or zoom kit with remote, handle, batts, and MB for under $15k. A lot to ask for pro gear, even from RED.
3K is more than enough for TV or Blu-Ray finish. 3K RAW with RED's tools would be beyond s-16 film, and WAY better than any 1080 film-out.
4K? That's the original Scarlet-S35-Epic-S, which is what I originally wanted.

And I've become one of Mr. Pavlov's dogs. If RED posts ANYTHING, 3,000 of us start drooling on the keyboard before we've read it.

I hope you are all right with the 7-8k price range

8k for a full interchangeable shooting package (with one lens) would be great. But who knows if the price jump Jim refers to is from the original 3k for 3k days (which I think everyone knows has been put to bed since HDRx) or if the price jump is from the figures thrown around more recently. I fear 8k may not be the 'pro' price point expected for the Scarlet now. I'm not complaining, you can't get something for nothing, and I'm sure that the Scarlet has been cost vs. valued fairly and the price is based on that.

Anyone want to buy a kidney? One semi-careful owner....

Written elsewhere:

if they launch a fixed 2/3" camera and their biggest, most amazing news ever is a price increase... they might be in trouble.

2/3 lenses not enough for 4K. S35 sensor and 4K would be pretty much EPIC-S so that's not good either... interesting. Can't wait for the announcements. Though, there are potential for major backfire if RED can't deliver.

I actually enjoyed reading this post, unlike the masses of people that are crying that its going to be more... I am a realist. I LOVE RED to death, they are an amazing company and there camera are grade A by every industry standard... If scarlet was going to be for me then it was, but seeing the price is going up more than expected, I am humbled that it isnt. And that makes me happy knowing I didnt wait around for it, I bought other cameras, love my hacked GH2, its fine for what I do... now Im just that much happier I have it... Au revior SCARLET... its been fun... cant wait to see how you've grown

Good news is that you won't find an option like this.

Jim
That was in response to Zac C's question, "Bad new like over $10k or somewhat bad news at slightly under 10k?"
Doesn't that maybe suggest a sub 10K priced Scarlet? My guess is between 6K and 8K and not over 9K.

I think it refers to the Ted's "Around $6k" price.

One other thing to think about with the re-emphasis on PRO for those fearing they have been priced out.

The more pro Scarlet is, the more available it should be via rental houses. I know that helps some a lot more than others, but internet based stills rental shops like borrowlenses.com and lensrentals.com are into the video game now and last I checked, borrowlenses.com is getting an Epic package. Both already rent AF100s and F3's. One possibility: rent it for a paying job, keep it for an extra day or two, shoot your own footage, master the workflow and see how it fits in with what you do/plan to do. Make a reel to sell it to customers.

My advantage: I can pick up rented equipment from borrowlenses.com at a camera shop 5 minutes away and Chater is practically in my backyard.

Well, that depends.

Rumor says 4k. Not sure if it reaches that, but I think it'll be more than 2k.

And if it's high res, I maintain it's an alternative. Like I said above: not the same features (RAW, fps...)... not equivalent. But a "instead of" kind of a camera for smaller budgets.

It's LESS than 2K. It's 1080. And 422. Not what I would call a professional digital cinema camera.

There are thousands of professionals who shoot mainly with DSLR's. DSLR's have been used to shoot Academy Award winning movies. Canon's new camera is even better, how is that not professional?
