Scarlet Predictions Revisited

I'm sure it doesn't mean anything, but MovieMaker reported an August release for Scarlet. Of course their editorial lead times interfere with it.

In the meantime though, I've stumbled across an alternate system, available now, that lets me shoot 2/3" uncompressed in what is essentially raw mode, with variable frame rates and interchangeable lenses. The resolution is really up there too, at least 5K, and the dynamic range is awesome. Equipment prices are fairly low, even for top-of-the line stuff, it's readily available, and there's no wait to purchase.

Of course, there's a downside. Postproduction costs are a bit high, and there's no immediate feedback on image quality.

Actually, I sorta' miss film. I began with still photography (newspapers) and I'm slowing making the move to motion, but I love going through a strip of negatives or uncut transparency film. Something feels so much more craftsman-like about it. I know that's not the case, but for pure art I think I'd continue on with film, simply for the emotional aspect of using it.

Film is great. As of now film is better than digital.
I was just saying that I can't afford to use it for all my projects, and that I can't wait for a digital alternative.

Oh yeah, I agree. For what I do, anything that's going to earn me money will be on digital. Projects that are just for fun - and only stills - I'll split between film and digital. I can't afford film for everything anymore. :smile5:

Maybe in motion where everything is garbage codecs and 1080p resolution.

But for stills, I've developed and printed hundreds of rolls of 35mm film, I've shot thousands of RAW shots on my (not even modern sensor, 5 year old) 12 megapixel DSLR. Plenty of examples to confirm that the later absolutely obliterates the former in image quality.

I expect Scarlet to bring that quality into motion with higher resolutions and RAW.

I think this is a great point; one that a great many people have overlooked. When stills became RAW a few years back, I couldn't imagine shooting with film any longer. There really seemed to be no benefit. There seems to be a great debate about whether "film is dead" or not. I agree that solidly bringing RAW to the motion workflow and, with cameras like the Epic with its MX chip, we are getting very close to that point. Only problem for some us is that we are waiting for Scarlet and... well, soon?

All this discussion about a product that doesn't exist yet... so if we are talking about something which is for the time being a fantasy, is this really the best we can do? A camera?

Lets start a thread about a car that can fly and goes back in time.... if we are wasting our time talking about a ghost, at least lets make it fun!

So, my dream car goes back in time, can fly, and it can run on garbage... so far it sounds like back to the future. What else can we add to it?

But I suppose you really should move that discussion to flyingcaruser.com and leave all of us stupid, time-wasting idiot camera users here to ruminate about the next generation of RED products. Or have we forgotten that RED has actually delivered on a lot of its promises and some of us have confidence that they will continue to do so.

If you can design and manufacture a flying car at a price below the current state-of-the-art sedan before Scarlet comes to market, I promise I'll buy one.

OK.... it's been enough. This was fun the first two months but it's been going on for two years. I want out.

Can someone start a mailing list which will send one single email - the one saying that Scarlet is on sale on the website - so I can then block this website from my browser? It's taking out too much of my time.

Mike - not exactly sure what your purpose was in quoting just a portion of my post but you sure did manage to misrepresent me given what you left out. :nono:

I am the stupid time wasting idiot!

I could have written three features in the time i spent here.

Let me know when it's out. I'll be shooting until then.

Goodbye

Notice you are still hanging around.:sifone:

Hey, trust us. we will PM you when it is released man.

PS: AFTER I have ordered mine!

Just make sure that when you're writing your screenplays you pay close attention to foRMattiNg. You know how picky readers can be. And does this mean we don't need to save a seat for you at the potluck? :emote_popcorn:

Actually, I am on record elsewhere on this forum with a $100 bet that says Scarlet will be released this year. My specific prediction was for Scarlet in late Sept. or early October but that was before the "bug." I still think a Scarlet release is quite probable before year end. Is that "on record" enough?

EDIT: And FWIW it looks like I am going to get an opportunity to shoot with a RED ONE later this sumnmer.

September. Passed.
October. Passed.

45 days left in 2010. We should double down on that bet.
