  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet owners and their reactions this week

Scarlet Dragon is too expensive only for a sensor and a new motherboard = 9500 dollars ( almost the same price we pay for the entire body ! body( sensor; motherboard, etc.... + side handle + ssd reader ), and when you compare it to the price of what the company competitor will bring : Pro Customer will always rent Epic , and eventually, probably a scarlet as a B cam

I don't really agree with you there. With 60fps at 5K the Scarlet-D is good enough to be used as an A cam even on a HFR shoot. In all honesty the Scarlet-D sort of negates the need for an Epic in many ways - if you want really high framerates you're going to rent a Phantom anyway and if the Scarlet-D can do 24fps at 6K you wouldn't even need an Epic for a motion+stills shoot. The Epic-D will be a bit more flexible with the slightly higher framerates it offers, but the Scarlet-D will be the actual workhorse that can get you through most shoots.

Yes i agree , but it will be the professional market who will decide. 4K was more than enough for A cam too:)

I agree. I think this upgrade will change how a lot of people view Scarlet cameras.

What I'm very curious about is what is next. I think it's safe to assume Dragon will be the flagship sensor for at least 4 to 5 years. Is RED going to make a S35 replacement camera for the Epic/Scarlet line with the same sensor? ...or instead will they focus on expanding their line? Large format, super high frame rate, etc? Will there be any sort of upgrade path offered for people with Scarlet/Epic Dragon cameras to one of their future cameras? Will be interesting...

?? I don't understand how you can compare a valid, great, 4K cam as the scarlett and a "perhaps" good 4K BMD. Did you ever use a BMD camera, their video mixer, and so ? It is much more buggy than Red. On the paper maybe but in real life ???

I was talking about Scarlet D vs Epic D , not Scarlet D Vs Epic X, i think the pro market will always choose Epic D....And Scarlet D probably as a B cam ......if they don t have already one : Scarlet are harder to rent than Epic

But i still find the Upgrade too expensive .....for only a sensor and a motherboard + the fact that you lose your armor Warranty ( Wich i find completely Unfair ) + ....

If the Scarlet D can scrape in at 25 or 30 in 6k then I'm not so sure.

Even with 5k at 60fps, with the DR boost of Dragon that's good for anything without slow mo. 50/60 at the larger resolution is a fairly big boost for the scarlet (remember the scarlet-x cant even make 4k 50). It allows fairly futureproof shooting for the TV areas where TV frame rates rather than film frame rates are still favored.

Yup. And that's "just" the 2.5k BMC

Especially when you think of people using simple (MLC) SSD's and complaining about write errors. Reliable recording for BMPC only with SLC SSD's, which cost as much as Redmags. Combined with way less compression ratio of BMPC's DNG that makes stable 4K raw recording pretty expensive down the line.

Sounds pretty much, like you don't have much experience in that field, do you?

If Scarlet can get 6K 25 then I'll definitely upgrade. I have a strong feeling RED won't do this though as I think it would piss off Epic owners. If so, I'll still keep my Scarlet as I love working with it and sell my 7D, 5D to buy the BMCC as B cam.

I'm happy to see that the scarlet will live on after dragon. I clocked over 1,300 hours in the past year without a single problem with my scarlet, so I'll be sad to it go, but I'm going epic to dragon route now. So I think I'll get over it. ;). Plus the upgrades start in july, now I know what I'm getting for my birthday... I would love to see what the scarlet can do after dragon.

YES, YES ,YES ....
Same reactions after Blackmagic 4K news ...
4k SDI ( 6G-SDI ) output !!!!!!
Blackmagic want kill all manufacturer of digital camera...

Anyway frame rate of Scarlet has identical Blackmagic 4K ( $3995 minus DaVinci - You can resell dongle for $795 in same day ) = $3200 and very cheap digital mags ( ordinary SSD ) .
No need to buy Pro LCD ( $1600 )
No need to buy Red Mags 512 ( $3900 )
No need to buy Red Rocket ( $4750 )

We will buy 10 pcs of these cameras for hard actions shooting ...

Important to note. The blackmagic camera is not out until AT LEAST this summer and more likely this winter, if ever. Also the Blackmagic has a global shutter (!!!) and makes full use of the super 35mm sensor where the Scarlet will crop to shoot at usable resolution - DCI 4K or Quad HD.

The 4k crop on the scarlet and the 5k crop on scarlet dragon are both around Super 35mm, the full sensor sizes are larger than super 35.

Your lucky, I've gone through 3 cameras and I'm on my 5th RMA in 13 months. I want to upgrade but RED is making it really hard for me.
