  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet -- Final predictions!

No need to get hostile. I'm just saying I'd like a camera (body + lens) around the size of an HVX! If I'd said "camera body only," would that have made it more understandable? That's what I want--a body plus interchangeable lenses. The body can be as "pocket" as they want to make it, if I can have interchangeable lenses.

Sorry if my reply came off as hostile, it wasn't meant to be. This why I tend to throw smilies all over my replies, just in case. Heh.

Anyway, your guess is as good as anyone else's. So get out your crystal ball and make your 'best guess' as to what the Scarlet will be. Remember this thread is about what you think it will be, not what you want it to be.

Spectrum 48K anyone:-)

Spectrum 48K anyone:-)

I think I've got it!
Mysterium sensor chips must be pretty hard to make, and it would be interesting to know how many they have to throw away for every one that is blemish-free free enough to use in a RED. There must be plenty of sensor chips with enough good photocells to still make a good 2K sensor, so what if they made a new camera design that only uses 2K's worth of photocells, and had a selection of circuit boards made so that they could select one that positions any particular chip's "good" area at the focal center of the lens. (Or simply made it possible to physically move the whole board around by a half inch or so).
All that they would need to do then is flash-program the readout circuitry so that it only reads the photocells in the "good" area, and ignore the rest.
If they haven't thought of this, then they damn well should have!

Has to come with a lens and be 2K for 7500 or less. Otherwise it just doesn't radically outdo an HVX or EX1. And a really bullet-proof workflow...

I'm sure it'll be at least 2K, plus it'll probably support at least 10-bit encoding, making it a lower-end digital-cinema camera. As such, whether or not it sells for $7,500 or less, Jim Jannard may not think that Scarlet is competing with HD video cameras.

Lurking, lurking, lurking...

Lurking, lurking, lurking...

...and not lurking now.

Coming from the DVX world I would really like to see 2K, RedCode, body only with lots of manual controls and lenses to be chosen by the buyer...Nikon, Canon, Primes...whatever, CF card slots..um, nice, sharp LCD for focus...let's see now, I'll probably think of something later and edit this post.

Oh, and under $4000...which may be "the crazy™" talkin'. See. Told you.

Next week can't come soon enough.

sincerely,

MT

i Think the Scarlet will have a Nikon mount.. and 2k redcode to CF cards.

True but that's the pool it will be compared to and it's a pretty sizable competition. 1920x1080(1080p) ain't too far from 2K(~2048 x 1080 or 1536 if you're counting full aperture). That said, I wouldn't expect anything less than intriguing from RED- they're smart fellows...

So, here are my thoughts about the Scarlet

Size

Well. Pocket size. As we know. But I don’t think this Pocket should be too small. The Scarlet will be the Size of a Sony HC1 in length, maybe a bit bigger in height and width. The Look&Feel should be like the red Prototype in this render:
redscarlet-thoughts1.thumbnail.jpg

But it will not be higher than wide, i expect it to be the other way. Wider than high. And the handles reach from the bottom left to the bottom right. So you could hold it at the sides and at the top.

Also the rods at the bottom will be designed that they can fit some accessories like mics, lights or a Tripodconnector.

You know what i mean. All the Stuff that makes the pocket-size more than pocket size.

2k? Or 4k Or 1080p?

The resolution of the image. well 4k would be dumb if the thing should not compete with the RedOne. And Jim said that it won’t. So the real Question is 2k, 1080p or 720p?

Everything of that, but not over it. 2k rocks and is a “real” Film-resolution. as in use in the Industry. Also it fits the 2k name they have patented. It will be Redcode RAW, which will rock, because it can be used with footage from the RedOne. It will be a 35mm Mysterium Chip with 6MP/2k resolution. Gives you the RED 35mm Look without 4k. The Lens will be a high-quality non-changeable one with f 32,5 - 390 or even wider. Manual focus with an assistent for focuschanges would be cool.

EFV or LCD

That’s a tought one. An Electronic ViewFinder would look pro, which the scarlet is said to be, but I dont think so. Why did Cams use a (analog)Viewfinder? Because the look through the real lenses did give them the biggest “resolution”. And in modern cams? Well. As the RedScarlet will record 2k a resolution half this wide and high should be good enough for an external 7″ LCD. The LCD should be at the back of the Cam and adjustable th make it viewable from the top or the bottom also.

Storage

Some kind of Flash. Maybe CF or SD, or a build-in Storage big enough to capture at least 4hrs in 2k

This are my thoughts. Let's wait if I get a cookie.

Red does not have the manufacturing ability to build a camera with a small fixed lens. Anything like a HV20, HVX or EX1 is way beyond reds ability to build for anywhere close to the same price point of those cameras.

Get real people! The red 18-50 zoom costs the same or more then a HVX or EX1. Red just does not have the experience base to build that kind of camera. There is a ton of R&D that goes into the features needed on a HVX or EX1. All of which is a bunch of R&D that red did not do with the red1. Red one actually has very basic to no features similair to a HVX or EX1. The red one is simply a great sensor with the ability to compress the footage and record on to flash or hard drives. No where in that process is built zoom servo's, auto iris, small lenses and multiple other features.

Jim saw a window of opportunity to build a high end camera that would compete with other high end cameras and beat them in price because they do not have to build all the auto features that are not used at that level. The high end sony, panasonic, viper and other digital cameras are very expensive for 2 main reasons. 1: they are built in small quantities and 2: Customers have paid a lot. I feel it will be totally impossible for red to build a camera that will beat out the HVX or EX1 in a features to price battle. Sony, cannon and panasonic just have way to much experience in that ring.

history will be littered with people telling all of what red couldn't achieve and did :)

eos mount is the good one

eos mount is the good one

i Think the Scarlet will have a Nikon mount.. and 2k redcode to CF cards.

just nikon mount is a very bad idea because it accepts only nikon mount lenses
on the contrary an eos birger or not birger accepts almost all lenses
including nikons

ADDITIONALY it has to be s35 size for DOF and wide angle lenses from still
photo cameras
if it is s16 the widest angle still lens is 16-17mm which as we all know
is a light tele lens for s16 gate.
again SCARLET I HOPE IS not too small ,HD EVF,S35 SENSOR with better than RED ONE performance in TUNGSTEN.
PRICE HAS TO BE FAIR FOR THE OFFERING AS RED ONE IS FAIR FOR THE
OFFERING and revolutionary.

history will be littered with people telling all of what red couldn't achieve and did :)
dear darkkelt i thought this kind of degrading a very serious issue
in that forum belongs only to jim
although we like the red company and most likely many of us will buy
-including me-as cinematographers we should not beleive that all other cameras are inferior.every company has its philosophy-existing potentials, dynamic potentials, manufacturing ability etc.
RED is ofcourse a very intriguing concept and result but all knowledge
comes from PANASONIC,VIPER,SILIKON IMAGING,DALSA etc that started
the digital cinema concept.
if we loose respect to our competition there is no progress.

I don't believe I attacked any other camera company in that sentence. I do believe that jim jannard doesn't like being told what he can't achieve and likes to prove people wrong. what I was trying to say is it takes a pretty brave person to tell jim anything isn't possible. because he's proving every day that it is. that will and determination can achieve just about anything. hey if all the other camera companies want to take that onboard and compete we will all benefit in huge ways because of it. just like we benefited from all the technology that came out of the mission to the moon. there were many who said that wasn't possible either.

the other companies are going through a process. it starts out with denial and fud and then it'll be acceptance and eventually if they are worth their salt it'll inspire them to compete and do something better

It does seem odd that Red would design a camera that is wholly dependent on another manufacturers product. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it does seem a bit odd. We'll know for sure in a week!

This is a awesome idea but the problem is the scarlet will probably sell way more the the red one(like at least 10 times more).

viewfinder revolution

viewfinder revolution

EFV or LCD

a realy revolutionary viewfinder would be an optical one like the one that P+S TECNIC makes for their SI-2K -overpriced-(CHECK THEIR SITE)
using a beam spliter of top quality from EDMUND OPTICS or SHOTT
they are not expensive and with amazing transmitance characteristis
we use them for over 20 years now in PHOTOSONICS and i have notice zero optical quality loss.
i hope red team will read that and take it into serious consideration
THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING ,
IN LIFE EVERYTHING CHANGES,INCLUDING THE VIEWFINDERS
i;m getting into these changing repetition sorry.

Final Predictions? Hmmm.

Lots of sad Red Neophytes when it's not the HVX Killer they've always dreamed of.

Optimistic Pessimist in me say so.

These kind of "predictions" are cheap and easy. "You'll all be wrong" or "you'll all be disappointed" doesn't really advance the discussion any. What's more interesting is a real prediction, and the logic behind that prediction. Then we'll see in a week who ended up being closest. It's all meant to be fun and encourage discussion as we count down these last few days until the Scarlet announcement.

I've said this many times and I'll say it again. red will want to amortize the r and d costs as much as possible from the RED ONE which means they'll reuse a lot of what they've learned on that project to give us a very capable but less feature rich camera than the RED ONE
