  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I think Graham has posted elsewhere on the difficulties in pulling a solid image out of that kind of setup. It would be a nice idea in theory..... but maybe involves more work than us "non-compression genius" types appreciate..... Let's see :biggrin:

Ok, I'll bite.

Scarlet will be the ultimate film student camera as well as a dream for those who have longed for a Cine Alta HD camera for cinematic shooting. It will not attempt to be the ultimate ENG or still camera.

1. It will not compete with Red One, so it will not be 4k or S35mm sensor size.

2. It will be slightly larger than S16, 2k, Redcode RAW to a flash card. The sensor will be perform just like the Mysterium does on a pixel for pixel basis.

3. 2 XLR audio inputs and time code out.

4. Red will make a beautiful, custom-designed, fixed lens that will be perfect for the sensor: very little CA, super sharp, etc. Manual focus, aperture, zoom. Approx. 9mm-44mm T/2.0.

5. Adjustable frame rate 1-72 fps. Manual shutter angle.

6. Only an EVF built-in, but good enough to manually focus with built in assistance.

7. Optional LCD.

8. HDMI preview out.

9. No scaling the full sensor to some lower resolution like 1080p or 720p, but windowed 1080p option available (perhaps later through a firmware update).

10. Some innovative matte box/ lens hood and filtering solution. Optional.

11. Workflow solution including color correction through Final Cut Pro Studio. Look for a few new aspects of integration.

12. Optional wireless electronic follow focus.

13. Size 2-3x HV20, depending upon how you measure.

14. Optional handles and mounting accessories.

15. Color: black, but with enough red to deserve the name.

16. Price 7.5k.

I will also go out on a limb and predict that Red will announce 2k projector to go along with their 4k projector, but this may develop a bit later.

Red will sell the above mentioned camera like Daimler sells black Mercedes to rich oilmen, like plastic beads to big-titted babes on Mardi Gras. . . I might want one of them. . .

A modular MINI cam would be VERY cool indeed. Start with a super small "pocket" body and sensor then build it up from there depending on your needs. Hobbiests could build a basic camera while those with more sophisticated needs (and bigger pockets) could build something more elborate. It's a cool idea, but I kind of wonder if it's entrenching on Red One's turf a bit too much.
 
Heres my off the wall prediction. A lens relay - think crash cam/pocket cam et al, must be connected to the mothership (red) wirelessly or wired to record,but can still do 4k. Im pulling at straws here. But an interesting concept. So basically a lens, sensor then output only.
 
Maybe the best indication of what Scarlet will be is in the name itself. There is a reason it's being called Scarlet and not RED <something>. After all, we already have the RED ONE and now we're going to have the RED SCARLET? Hmmm, not sure that works.
Now consider the possibility that Scarlet is a RED camera being co-designed/manufactured by say, Canon, who has nothing to lose in this market space, unlike Sony and Panasonic. After all, Jim seems somewhat partial to Canon DSLRs. I'm thinking something more in the Powershot form factor. Definitely pocketable. Using 2K Redcode recording to CF card, clips will cut together well with RED ONE, so definitely professional.
The advertising tagline might even read something like:
"For those one-of-a-kind moments that make you wish you had a RED in your pocket. Now you can."
 
I'm guessing it will be:

the size of or smaller then the DVX

2.5k ish 16:9 chip
24fps with maybe a few other frame rate options
fixed lens (hopefully it wont be a crappy one, and will have a good zoom range)
built in color VF with add-on LCD avalible

that kinda thing

Thank you, Boz. Meant to get back to you earlier, but work has been awful this week.

I only have one prediction for Scarlet that I know will get me in the ballpark: It's going to be jaw-droppingly amazing!
 
Now that Jim has confirmed it really won't be a shirt pocket camera I'm pretty clueless. If it's an EX1 with 35mm DOF and interchangeable lenses I'm buying one and selling RED.

Since they won't be taking reservations I sorta wonder if the surprise might be they're taking orders. Given all the work they are doing on RED it's hard to imagine a second camera would be ready to go.
 
I believe Jim said in one of his original Scarlet posts that prototypes would be shown at NAB. So if that's the case that means we're many months from seeing a production version. But at least we'll know what to expect and will be able to decide if it suits our needs or not. For me that will certainly be a relief.

Well given that they are showing prototypes at NAB I seriously doubt a production model is anywhere less than 6 months away. But what do I know about camera production? Nada! Ha! Maybe the 4/30 date is for reservations?

Anyway, it's going to take some time. Red isn't that large of a company so I'm sure their resources are stretched pretty thin at the moment. Jim's most recent response to the "when will it be out" question was "Not soon enough." So it doesn't sound like it's right around the corner.

I'm just dying to know what this thing is. Hints about its size, construction, and professional status along with it being a 'new category' of camera certainly have piqued my interest.

*I'm saying 4k because it's called a "professional" camera and Jim has often said the future is 4k. Also I think he is a believer in mass production and he's already producing the 4k sensors. I'm not sure how it would deal with the heat, but maybe it'd just be very heavy and full of mass (which helps with heat) - I don't know, but this is my prediction and I'm sticking to it. ;)

I nearly go along with this in the price bracket - but a couple of exceptions.

Every cam in this market has fixed lens - and yet to this day what the market is crying out for in this bracket is LENS MOUNT OPTIONS !!!

hey, I don't mind if it's gonna be 2k or whatever it has to be - 1080p .. I don't care. Mount options and I'm in.

It was the promise of the hvx and Panny in my mind screwed up there - they could've done it. <quick historical conference call to Sony, "Just checking if your release schedule is on track ? We haven't changed ours ...>

But once again - nnooo, we gotta sell you something that's nearly there but crippled to protect our broadcast cams.
Shit don't get me started - had to do some DVC Pro HD stuff this afternoon - the camera op was fair to good - but heck, my eyes are bad enough anyway without having to blame a fcuking codec and that's all there was to blame ! (weird tho' - checking at the output reso to a SD broadcast monitor and it looked uhh, reasonable good sd stuff, not top but ok - pssshhht). I'm just sick of this compromise always dished up by the big guns.
(Yes hvx, fast moving sport stuff, sooo take it with a grain of salt, please. Not the right cam for the job I know - but it was the right cam for the budget..)

Guys, when is Scarlet's underwear due to be exposed?

Is it scheduled for tomorrow or maybe - One Big Thing per day?

People, what a speculation!

I think most of you are wrong. This camera won't be HV20 size. I hope, because that is way too small to handle it professionally.

My bets:

- Run and gun camera
- 2008 equivalent of the Super 16 camera of the old days (where the RED ONE is the modern 35mm camera to say so)
- Fusion between video and photography

That's all. I think interchangeable lenses, and hope everything is manual.

I cannot imagine it will be everything else. I think you should also forget about the pocket. If it can fit in a pocket, then they are competing with the whole industry and are in the consumer market. And as pointed out before, the smaller it gets, the more expensive it will be, and the more R&D investments will be needed, so no, I don't believe that. And if it is a DSLR type of thing, filming is different from photographing. I would not want to hold my Nikon D200 for 60 minutes pointing at someone.

I hope that this will be the ultimate indie camcorder.
