Thanks for this detailed reply. Indeed I have 3smallHD etc!

Do you think I could go redmote only

Beyond that the package is too costly (to me)

I will mainly be shooting 3k 25p 1/50 and manual ap nikon glass with canikon converter on each lens - cant see that I need many controls during the shoot day only FirmWare and the like

Will swap to 4k for wide shots . Do you need to change the ISO or is ISO a 'myth'
And change framerate/res on occasion

S

I suppose you could go Redmote only. You'll have to check with other Scarlet users :)

Basically, when updating firmware, the Scarlet resets to a base mode that outputs the signal to a Red monitor (with overlays and menus) and the SDI/HDMI go to clean feed. This caused a lot of problems when users tried to avoid getting a Touchscreen and use their existing monitors, as some users could not get the menus back etc - obvioulsy, not RED's fault, as, by default I think they presume owners have an touchscreen. Now, all this may have changed now :) - as RED have been refining the way updates work.

I'd presume, if you purchase a Scarlet and a Redmote now, they will work perfectly - but you'd need to be careful updating firmware :)

On 3K/25P - any reason why not 4K for the whole job? You're windowing the sensor going to 3K - it'd be more logical to shoot 4K and scale later (or reframe/3K extract etc).

ISO - ahh, hosts of threads on that one! Consensus from the last major set of postings on leaving at 800 or 320 was leave at 800 for more highlight protection or 320 if you're in control. I know from seeing other posts on DVX that you're into details - maybe look through this latest thread on native ISO - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?86485-Opinion-POLL-EPIC-native-ISO-800-or-ISO-320- there's good input form Graeme Nattress - plus links etc (here's a basic one - http://www.red.com/learn/red-101/exposure-with-red-cameras). Really it depends what you're doing and how much light you have - versus how much noise (grain) you want etc.

OK - back to work for me - extended tea break over.

Any clarity on FW updates without monitor would be appreciated from users/owners

3k ? well I only want to deliver awesome 1080.
I guess save a little space, and get a bit more DOF (in effect) - im not a shallow junkie
Something like the 18-50 seems a great range at 3k with a few wide shots at 4k where required - im not a wide junkie - 18-80 is too heavy!

800 for more highlight protection/noisier shadows - thats standard issue for a 'fixed ISO camera' in my book of ETTR -sounds like a fixed ISO camera to me

And thanks for the time :)

I think if John Gaeta (VFX on The Matrix and creator of "Bullet Time") is involved then that may be feasible. He was the first to put the actual theory into practice of multiple camera capture. Not sure if it's still a trade secret or a way of capturing that is still kept under his control.
no thread hijack, but give michel gondry and his brother credit for that one.
