Scarlet Deal of a Lifetime

.....I'm going to be broke for awhile, but I regret nothing!

Got my reservation on Nov 2011, (received Scarlet April 2012) and was broke for the next 10 months saving tooth and nail accessorizing!!!. (Took 2 months just to save for batteries!!!). Finally made debut usage on August 20th and I can tell you ....I regret nothing.
A friend (who happens to own 2) told me, rental income is GOOD but the power to do your own project is the BEST.
CONGRATS

I think ten months could be a good timeframe to build a complete kit. I'm not in a hurry, and neither is my bank account.
My day job mostly involves shooting ENG style (although I do one or two TV commercials a year), so although I will eventually use my Scarlet for work stuff, I really want it for private art projects... and for that, I'm happy to wait!

Welcome to the family Maurice.. look forward to seeing your first shot.

Thankyou very much Jarred. I really am looking forward to it too.

I'm also one of the lucky bastards who saw this amazing deal in time. Placed my order on Oct 15th and am now counting the days for it to finally ship. Can't wait!

Hi Andy, Thanks for the info, well no way to have this very good offer and choice i have to go for the regular price offered in the RED Stores.

Yup. Same boat, but I know they are working hard to get them processed. 11 days ago, a new RED
was out of my budget, was aiming for a Blackmagic for its raw capabilities, (but my buddy's BM has been on pre-order since day 1)
but either way, have been renting REDS and still have access to those if I need them.
Then I happened to stumble across the "deal of a lifetime" thread, and, bam, suddenly, will have access , soon, to a much more amazing tool for me
and on a full time basis. My feeling is that it is coming real soon. So am channelling my inner Zen. My accessories are already on the way. Bumped up my delivery from ground to overnight, for the cam tho..ground takes about a week for me, from CA to NYC. Is exciting to see others getting their cams, and exciting for me, knowing it will be here soon!! Cheers!

Good to hear that Blackmagic is on its way compete with RED this will be a good competition as pricing is the issue here. I think Blackmagic will also have good features and functionality as RED with a better MSP/RSP. But considering all the features this could be another RED KILLER Camera like Sony F65 and the FS series.

Huh? The BM camera has half the resolution of the Scarlet / Epic. How is that a RED Killer? You can't even swap out the battery on the BM came - that makes it pretty much useless in most production environments.

taking a step back...to even put the BMD in the same pedestal with the Sony F65 CineAlta...hmmm

Bottom line...use what you can afford and do a heck of a job. I started my company with a 1 chip Sony Hi8 and a Canon Scoopic 16mm camera...know your tools and watch yourself grow to bigger and better tools....

+1 on the useless plastic cam... that thing can't even change the mount, much less the battery, it can't over crank...it uses a codec most NLE's dont support yet...I could go on...

"RED KILLER Camera..." Uh... I don't think so. LOL

I'm not saying totally it is but could be... It is just a first steps that Blackmagic made the cam and see the good market on it, they're trying to at least go near to RED in order to compete... you don't have maybe any background about the Blackmagic company you will see it soon as those guys have bigger team and have much enough and broad resources than RED Company to support it....if they're willing too.

I'm a beta tester of Blackmagic and the picture out of the camera is just superb! Very filmic. Of course, crop is huge, but the DR and sharpness is fantastic. Internal battery is of course a downside, but I'm always using V-Mounts and have a rig for the BMCC. Works just fine. Touchscreen of the BMCC feels like a iPhone, but it has lots of reflections while shooting outside. I'm very happy with the picture out of it. And it's not a plastic camera. The built quality is awesome. The whole body is aluminium.

Yeah, I absolutely LOVE our Scarlet and we plan to upgrade to an Epic soon enough (and then to Dragon), but people here seem to straight up make up negative things about other cameras (or at least GREATLY exaggerate certain downsides about those cameras) as a way of emphasizing how much they like their Red. The BMCC is a great camera and fills a niche that Red does not (at least for the time being). I don't see it as a direct competitor to the Scarlet at all really. There are totally valid reasons for preferring one over the other.

Also, congrats to the happy new Scarlet owners! I hope that you guys enjoy your camera as much as we do ours.

How is the resolution compare to RED? GLEN said the the BM camera has half the resolution of the Scarlet / Epic. How is that?

With all the BMCC talk I just have to say that thanks to Black Magic, I would have never ordered my Scarlet.
The long wait (pre-order) took its toll on me and I finally shook my head and made the right decision.

The BMCC is a 2K res camera.
The Scarlet is 4K and beyond.

the BMCC is a 2.5K uncompressed raw camera
the scarlet is a 4K 7:1 compressed camera
depending on what is in the frame it can be a big difference or not so big at all.....

Thanks Paul, I missed the .5K :)
