  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet at CES

No, I am just testing my psychic abilities. They are getting better as I age. i will know for sure in the next few months. LOL. So far you can't shoot movies with an empty box.

Maybe a pin hole cinematic camera (from the empty box) at one frame per hour (awesome) [you have to put photomedia in the box, not very digital...]

[Ironic as Camera means BOX, and a digital camera is a digital box, so at least Scarlet's design is honest, a cross between a Hassleblad and a piece of studio equipment in terms of looks].

I wish the left cheek "bosses" were not there so that better side by side inter occular for stereo 3d was possible, so a slim tall box (not a coffin) works for me. Tossy product styling is very over rated as it gets in the way of serious engineering as there are no good surface to bolt stuff onto. Compound organic swedish curves on your camera get in the way of this, a fraking box wins every time unless you are selling to amateurs who are more interested in how cool something looks. Red at least aims to provide something that can be extensively developed and modified by 3rd parties, viva la box (aka/camera).

The camera looks like a very posh brick so that all the other components link to its straight edged form factor as easily, quickly and simply as possible. It's whats inside that counts. As long as the footage rocks. Besides, we already know how good the cameras look when you add all the grips, modules, rigs etc. Bring it on!!!!.
If the camera isn't ready by early summer, I think I may just keel over.

Always interesting when someone proclaims one product will 'kill' another, more interesting when the product they are talking about isn't available to do such a thing. Sony have made their money from the EX1 / EX3, they are not going to care about the Scarlet because they would have moved on to the next product, same with Canon and the 5D / 7D. How can you kill a market when it has already performed and moved on? Foolish comments.

Rafael, next time READ my comment properly. I said it COULD be a killer AND I clearly stated it was all conjecture and hearsay. Which part of that don't you understand?

I'm hoping you see the "foolish" irony in your own predictions for Sony and Canon but I'm not holding my breath.

I agree,

I like the “Posh Brick” concept, (very British), and it is true that it will be for a lot of applications just a blur of cool accessories and somewhere buried deep one will find the sensor ‘cube” or brain. I have always liked the purity of the idea that the sensor module is just a sensor module, not inextricably mixed up with a bunch of other crap, I wish 35mm and to an extent medium format DSLRs were designed and built with the same mind set (at least for my/our applications). I hope this type of functional design carries through for many years with the RED lines and they don’t become too seduced into producing physically over integrated over designed and over-styled products.

Cheers,
Eric

The camera looks great!

Just one question though - in the Scarlet spec-sheets at Red.com they list the CF module as a separate module you can buy. But based on these new images of the Scarlet, it looks as though the CF is built right into the brain. Does this mean that CF will come with the brain and we won't need to buy the module? And if so, what would the CF module be for? Is it so you can have two CF cards loaded at once for continuous filming?

it's not built into the brain. It's just a very nice fit :) It will come with the 8x Fixed Complete Kit (along with other things such as the 2.8" touch LCD, etc) as part of the package... but, not with the interchangeable 2/3" model as far as we know right now. The side CF module would be a good option for building the most compact setup you can. The dual-slot CF rear module would also be a pretty compact option, but is going to lend itself towards continuous recording when coupled with a battery module.

later,
Jason

Great - thanks Jason.

Yes, I do hope RED offers the same 'complete kit' for the 2/3 interchangeable as they offer for the fixed lens. I added up the price of the interchangeable brain + modules to match the same kit as the Fixed lens - it works out to about $1200 less for the fixed lens plus you get a lens with it.

But no complaits though - even at $6000, if these cameras do all that has been said they will do, then that is still a great price. I just need to figure out which route I'm gonna be taking. I hope RED will be posting more product and kit info soon.

Thanks again

Just thought I'd mention that since real full names are required in this forum you'd better put your name in your signature or you could be banned. Also, you should post your name here as well to get it changed over.

Stephen,

Thank you for the advice, but I am aware of it. BTW, my name is really Genaton (Genaton Alex Gonçalves - as written on my original post). I know it sounds as odd as the Scarlet's design. Love it or hate it, it is the way it is... I'm sorry!

Cheers!

No problem about your name, it's just that the rules say you also need your last name or at least an initial.

Rules followed, I've just put my "automatic" signature at User CP.

See you.

The irony Kris, is that RED are no different then any other company, they are requiring that you buy their latest model, EPIC, because it's better. I'm all for this why would you want to keep old tech, it's the nature of the game.

A lot of COULDS around here, let me know when those COULDS become DOES. You talk nonsense because as yet no product exists. When did it become acceptable for people to trash other products when 'theirs' doesn't exist. This weird to me.

Really excited to see the Scarlett when it arrives. Only fools will speculate.

Looking good. I was just wondering about the follow focus... I don't remember reading anything about in the forum (sorry if I missed it, folks :blush2:). What are guys planning to use?
(I mean... Redmote Pro as only option?)

When, and I want you to show me with a quote, did I 'trash' another product??? Show me!

And you say 'I' talk nonsense? If you don't like the speculation here which, by the way, is something I conceded right up front, then what are you even here for? To piss and moan about others expectations for a bright new shooting future? And you have the audacity to call almost every forum member a fool because they're 'speculating' about ALL of RED's products? Way to go buddy! You must have HEAPS of friends.

Idiot. :nads:

Seeing is believing. I was wondering, why there aren't any footage from this camera?

Any idea where you can see the Scarlet at today? I've been stuck at our booth all week (3706 north hall, come say hi, I'll give you goodies) and I really want to take a look at it. I've got a custom piece with me I machined for the red one and I'm curious if it will fit on the Scarlet. If anyone knows text me at 480 570 0233 Thanks!

Have they deliberately made the camera a lot bigger than it will be just to put people off the scent, and surprise them at NAB?

OK seen some more photos, it seems to be just an extremely warpy wide angle lens affect, or otherwise some people have giant hands compared to others ;) . Actually.

Except that we gave you 4.5K for the RED ONE (on a camera that was originally going to be a 2K camera)...

Except that you can upgrade the sensor on your RED ONE...

Except that you can upgrade to an SSD on your RED ONE...

Except that we give you full trade in on your RED ONE if you do decide to upgrade...

How is that like any other company?

This is so very true.

I've always wondered what people would do if Big Camera Company, Inc. sent all it's CAM-230 customers the following letter:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your purchase some years ago of the CAM-230. We hope you have found it a useful and productive tool in your enterprise. In the mean time, we have been working hard to develop the CAM-330, a great camera which will be out in about a years time.

However, we'd like to go ahead and give you all the option of upgrading your sensors and or media I/O device for the fraction of the price of a new CAM-330. If you are interested, please contact your sales or service representative.

Best wishes and hugs,

Big Camera Company, Inc.

People would fall on their asses.
