  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet at CES

Interesting that they chose to show it off at a consumer electronics show. I wonder if this is indicative of the marketing angle they're going to take with the Scarlet to give it some distinction from the "professional" Epic.

What strikes me as odd is that no one from Red actually said anything about it being shown at CES. Nor did anyone from Red take the time to post pics of this event. It actually was posted by a member of the forum.

I doubt it... I think the RAW workflow is going to be too complex for the general consumer for a few years at least (consumers are usually are the kind of people who edit in iMovie and Windows Movie Maker, remember), and they generally don't want to be changing lenses (as seen by the number of entry level DSLRs you see around with just the cheap kit lens on).

But the main problem for consumers is the cost, size and weight. For a high end prosumer buyer, Scarlet is very cost effective compared to, say, an EX1, and the weight is not that much as an issue because they would be prepared to buy more than a $200 tripod. But a consumer I think would really only want something that's small enough to hang around their neck and easily hand hold.

A mock up, but not a working prototype or footage to check out? The do seem to without accountability and or running things on their own time schedule. It's been clearly stated that things will change, but when will the rubber hit the road? I've tuned in to read announcements that tell of future announcements, but it's not a continuous monitoring as that would be frustrating. I'll check from time to time, and be pragmatic.... but of course if and when it delivers I'll be right there with checkbook in hand.... and thus why the hope is still there.

...like, say, a fixed 2/3" Scarlet?

Perhaps, but you still have the problem about the complex workflow, the (relatively) very high price, the large size, weight, and so on.

Like I said, all these factors are fairly normal for high end prosumer stuff (like the kind of person who would be buying an EX1 or EX3) but I think they would be barriers for the general consumer.

It will be ready by the end of 2010, so everybody start saving every penny you come across 'cause these babies are going to cost much more than anticipated. Just wait and see. It will be a very long and costly wait.

so you are just stating your speculation as though it is hard fact now, eh?

But Stepen don't forget that the Epic/Scarlet will also have the ability to record 1080p as well as 720p, for those that want that type of workflow.

The fixed 2/3 Scarlet could easily decimate the EX1/3 market. An EX3 runs around $10k aud and is limited to 1920x1080. The Scarlet (on paper of course) kills that spec and costs a little less (at the moment). It's physical size is a non-issue.

I still think it's a telling sign that RED chose to reveal the Scarlet 2/3 in the flesh at a consumer trade show. These kind of things aren't just done on a whim. They're designed to attract maximum attention for the target market. With that in mind, I say the fixed 2/3 Scarlet is going to be RED's 'model for the masses'. It's certainly priced that way. Like Apple's iPod, it could well be RED's bread and butter while they press on to even more insane technological frontiers.

But of course this is all hearsay and conjecture because it's all vaporware right now.... isn't it?

Heck, never mind the EX market, Im selling my Nikons to get at it!

I honestly think youll start seeing them in the hands of tourists at Disneyworld pretty soon after they come out.

If it gives RED more cashflow to build better pro cameras, then the more the better!

Marketing - these little web postings will get more press than Sony or Panasonic get spending millions of dollars.

Engadget is sneak peak is smart.

Always interesting when someone proclaims one product will 'kill' another, more interesting when the product they are talking about isn't available to do such a thing. Sony have made their money from the EX1 / EX3, they are not going to care about the Scarlet because they would have moved on to the next product, same with Canon and the 5D / 7D. How can you kill a market when it has already performed and moved on? Foolish comments.

No, I am just testing my psychic abilities. They are getting better as I age. i will know for sure in the next few months. LOL. So far you can't shoot movies with an empty box.

I have always wondered if RED would have to set up a separate corporate entity to meet the demand and intended market for the Scarlet? That could be a lot of boxes to shift and that does not seem to be their current culture or mind set? Perhaps they would license and partner with a different firm to handle large volume?

Cheers
Eric
