  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Can somebody help me out here please? Thanks.

Jiri I think the scarlet is not projected for this kind of lens and work type. You might adapt your work-style to it just like all the DSLR shooters for TV DOK work do over here in Europe ( and their stuff is broadcast!).

So forget the typical ENG lens for now....or wait until some small company offers a solution for your requirements.

Yes they are.. still don't understand what people expect here.... but o well. Can't make everyone happy :)

Jarred, I see why you are frustrated. I also posted earlier asking if we could use other SSD media because of the prices and never even thought about some of the things you mentioned like the extra testing or firmware tweaks you do to have them perform up to your standards. That all makes sense.

If i were shooting for a client or anything of importance where we could not afford media to be corrupted I would never think of shooting without solid Red approved media. However, if I were shooting my own material on my own time or my own projects I might be ok with using media that was not Red and roll the dice a little. There are some seriously solid SSD drives out there that are wicked fast and really reliable, so picking up a few for 1/6 the price and using it for less important things doesn't seem that crazy to me. It's just an option and hope you see both sides to this.

First let me say that the Scarlet has turned out to be a wicked camera, that offers more than any camera in it's range. Yet I think it's obvious that a lot of users on here have been waiting for that 3K scarlet for years now and maybe expected it to double in price based on the posts in the forum recently but at at last it's a 9K camera which is really 14K if you don't already own an Epic and have the required accessories. Then you need media, I would say two 64gb 4 packs at a minimum for any realistic amount of storage in a day of shooting - that is another 6-7K. So there is some sticker shock for some users who are true Red supporters and have been waiting patiently for years to finally have the chance to buy in to Red and become a Red owner, not just a Red forum reader.

A lot of those users have helped support and promote Red over the years even when they didn't own anything Red made, so I hope you are not too hard on them for trying to minimize the financial impact while realizing their dream.

Sweet !!!

Thank you! Missed this and it does help fill in the blanks quite a bit.

However, can you (or anyone) tell me with regard to using the Spacecam mount if I can still mount PL as well on this mount or will I have to either use an adapter or change back to the Ti PL mount?

Perhaps another way to ask this is, "Since the Spacecam mount doesn't nullify any warranty, does the camera see the Spacecam mount as a PL and will this mount function as a PL?"

Congratulations to everyone at Red on broadening the range of the professional market.

We are not likely to offer "Scarlet only" media. Someone owns both EPIC and Scarlet and has to remember which media will work with which camera?

Jim

Brilliant! Truly use both Epic and Scarlet to meet different shot demands and multiple camera setups for a said project, w/ no need to create seperate rigs, store separate media, or have separate anything... suddenly want 4K HDRx for a sunrise shot, swap in the epic(or rent it for a day) and use the same media... decide for higher frame rates for slow-mo/timeplay, swap in the epic... want to shoot 4k on the side of mountain w/ a Jib, swap out the epic for the the less expensive Scarlet.

We have been testing cheaper/slower solutions... so far they haven't worked well. Its not all about speed.. reliability with constant non-traditional block data writes over and over again, temperature issues, lifespan etc. Same thing we went through with CF cards the first time around. We just don't like to take chances on media.

thats understandable - nothing worse then loosing footage. and I am sure it will get better in the future as with everything. just thought it was just about the speed... did you actually look into slower speed reliable ones? Don´t know how long the scarlet decision is but the SSDs were developed with EPIC in mind if I am correct?!?! Maybe they will get cheaper by themselves ones the hordes of scarlet user are in need of lots of them and you order them by the millions ;)

EDIT: Just read that other reply - I think they could be color coded and that is then easy - you could also use them in the EPIC just not for high framerate high data rate stuff. oh well - as said maybe prices drop when we demand tons of them...

Hi, media reliability and speed (not only in camera but also when copying files to other drives) is a HUGE deal. Yes, some people use the RED cameras casually but its best to limit the media options to something that RED has some control over since one never knows when even a modest comercial production will use a cheaper media (for cost or convenience reasons) that ends up costing them a lot of money in lost or corrupted files

The Compact Flash Media was and still is a huge bottleneck and risk in the RED camera workflow. In fact I have personally witnessed producers and clients come into a post-production house almost in tears because the have useless clips that were corrupted when being copied. Work with RED cameras long enough and you will see that happen to someone. Yes, it is not REDs fault, its mainly the fault of some digital loader that didnt do his job properly and did not check all clips fully before giving back a card to the CA or DP to be re-used. BUT, those clients that were burned by someones incompetence did not care, to them, using the RED camera was risky. (Yes, I know, film WAS/Is very risky too but in the analog world some risk seems to be acceptable, In the instant gratification digital world, it somehow isnt).

The New REDMAGs solve the speed and reliability problem. Its probably the best media solution out there, less are needed in a production (even a Movie Production shooting at a typical shooting ratio will rarely ever go over 300gb per camera, a lot of times its half that)

Regarding the RED Scarlet, well, I kinda accepted the fact that RED basically scrapped the idea of an affordable ($3-6k with lens) Raw recording video camera and basically made an EPIC lite. It is what it is. Which is still awesome, the more choices the better.

Really happy about the Stage 3 Release! Thanks Red Team!

, "Since the Spacecam mount doesn't nullify any warranty, does the camera see the Spacecam mount as a PL and will this mount function as a PL?" .

The only space cam mount that does not void warranty is the EPIC lieca M one and even though the prototype does not void the warranty it is still not officially approved as we have never seen the final version.

Not sure what PL mount you are talking about, but its not going to be automatic like the RED mounts are.

It's a confusing question and correct me if I'm wrong, I think he's asking if the SpaceCam's Leica mount's reads as a PL mount somewhere in the camera metadata. SpaceCam is not making a PL mount.

The SpaceCam Leica M mount is a "dumb" mount and is in no way connected to the camera other than mechanically. As Jarred has mentioned, it does not void the warranty. The submitted prototype is exactly the same in dimension and design as the production version. The difference being a metal alloy change in one part and different coatings and changes in the engraving. We look forward to completing the first production run next week and are very pleased with the orders to date. It simply opens up more creative options for users of this fine camera.
As to what the Epic "sees" in the absence of contacting a "smart" mount, I simply do not know. What I do know is that the Leica M's provide "jaw dropping" images rated by one large rental house head, as the best he has ever seen from an Epic.....So!!
The SpaceCam Leica M mount can be installed literally within minutes without changes to the sensor position so quick interchangability can be maintained.
This lens mount is the only lens mount that SpaceCam is making at this time for this camera.

Have the audio capabilities of Scarlet-X been discussed?

My searches turned up nothing and I'd rather not just assume they're the same as Epic (which, I thought wasn't currently enabled.) Does it have built-in mini-XLRs? I thought I saw two 3.5mm jacks up front too.

Also, has it been confirmed if the package prices will also go up on orders placed after Dec. 31st? I don't plan on getting just the body, so I'll feel far less pressure to find $14k in the next month or so if the package price(s) stay the same in the new year.

I not understand why my order inerent the Scarlet kit was cancelled and splitted in single parts es. Body, redvolts, redmag etc..., also now is in sterling amount not in US dollar and cost me with the exchange 1200€ more than before.
What's about US TAX? I must pay that? The price are TAX included?
PLS give me a light.

On Scarlet? No. You are getting everything we can squeeze in that box for this price with the specs we posted. If you need 4.5K, but a used RED ONE or an EPIC.

Jim

Correction Jim... we are getting a hell of a lot more in a scarlet then you should be able to squeeze into it for that price..

Hello everybody,

From this:

I calculate this, ¿are correct?

If 1:1 is 55MB/s (440Mb/s) then:

4K 25fps 6:1 > 9,2 MB/s (73,34 Mb/s)
3K 25fps 4:1 > 13,75 MB/s (110 Mb/s)
2K 25fps 3:1 > 18,34MB/s (146,67 Mb/s)
1K 25fps 3:1 > 18,34MB/s (146,67 Mb/s)

Some important questions:

What bitrate does Scarlet have? I see in the tech specs web "16-bit RAW Processing : Compression choices of 18:1 to 3:1" How much is it in Mb/s?

Can Scarlet generate QT Proxys?

What kind of resolution and bitrate can I record by HD-SDI out?

Regards

Can't comment on how the Spacecam mount will function as we have not seen the final product. We have heard some concerns with contamination from dust and light since there are no seals anywhere but i think they are fixing that... even if they do not fix that it will not void your warranty.. you would just need to be careful around light and around dust with the Spacecam one.

Which probably is a good segway to announce....

The Official RED Leica M mount ( that is sealed ) and will work with Scarlet and Epic out of the box is finishing testing and should be in the store early December...

Aluminum version $800.

1:1 is not 55 MB/s. 55 MB/s is the nominal bitrate across all the different modes. The compression ratio is for what 55 MB/s is to uncompressed (i.e. 1:1) at those resolutions and frame rates. So at 4K / 25 fps, 1:1 would be approx 330 MB/s as 55 MB/s is 6:1. That's my interpretation anyway. Of course, min compression ratio possible with Scarlet is 3:1.

Thank you Jarred, C.J. and Roy as this info is really helpful. I was very interested in the Spacecam Mount for both Leica quality and because I had heard there was a Nikon adapter for the old (but still good!) Nikon glass I already have. I liked the idea of having one mount good for both Leica and for my trusty Nikon primes and older zooms using an adapter.

I've been trying to decide between the Ti PL mount package and the less expensive Canon AL mount package as my entry buy putting the savings toward a Leica mount. The thing is, I don't own any Canon glass and am not really very interested in owning any either. I also don't own any PL lenses but am leaning a little in that direction for now if I have to buy one as I'd prefer not to fall too much further to the back of the line by waiting. It's kind of a techie Catch 22...

C.J. was correct that I wanted to know what the camera was identifying the mount as in the metadata as I didn't want to screw that up and I'm still curious about that with regard to this new Leica mount as well. Obviously I want to make sure I don't violate warranty and also that my CS5.5 software will give me as much accurate information about my recordings as possible...

I think what is most confusing to me is what happens when you have an adapter on a mount (does this dumb down your post production info?) and also if I should just itemize on my order? Buy the mount later as I wait on the order? I do feel the next lens I actually buy for this camera will be a Leica. Thank you all for your help and advice!

I'm so happy:) saving every cent I make for the Scarlet-X!! Will slowly make the transition from DSLRs to RED!!!! This year will be a good year!! Thanks Jim and the Red team!!!

Hi Jarred, could we get some good news about red pro EF (Auto focus) lenses in the near future? thanks
