  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redrocket/Rocketcine to transcode Avid DNXHD (wrapped .mxf)

Could use more slots in that Mac though... not much I can do when I have an MC on Unity with DX hardware attached.

Michael
True, altho until AVID directly supports RedRocket it prob wouldn't be put in a Edit suite box anyway and more of a workhorse-station i'd think. but is def nice to have options...

Yes, for dailies use only I would most likely put it on a lower cost box - a PC would probaly suit the bill better for that singular purpose.

Michael

This is going to be great.

Will the metadata that's passed through allow you to do an Avid DS AFE conform?

Currently we can only do this if the offline starts in Metafuze as stated in the Avid REDstepbystep guide - is this still the case?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, the conform will make its way through to DS. You can conform today in DS when the transcode starts in RED RUSHES, etc. The issue is the reverse, starting in MetaFuze makes it more difficult to finish in other systems although v2 puts original file name in Camroll for EDL generation when going to those systems.

Sure would be dandy if MC would support the RedRocket without DX hardware .... doubt we'll see that - but that would be the move IMHO. Unless, of course, hell froze over and they went all native on us ...

Thanks Michael.

Tom :)

Just an FYI out there...
Was transcoding on set today and foolishly (distracted amidst a conversation) changed the name of the folder Rocketcine-X was outputting to...while transcoding.
When I went to check the files there was an error report (along the lines of unable to process first frame) from that point forward.
Seemingly obvious (all I did was add the text HQ to "Prores 1080 Transcodes"), but thought I'd pass it on to save someone else the grief.

Does RocketCine-X allow to place burnins on the footage, like MetaFuze does?

Where is the main info page for RocketCine/RedRocket? I have tons of questions, like: is it available, what stage is it in, burnins or not, resolution options, system requirements.... A google search does not come up with much.

It does do burn-ins, all DNxHD formats... Avid will post a step by step soon on using it for Avid workflows. As far as your other questions... those are for RED to answer! ;)

I see a problem with TC in a 24p project. 25p is really fine. Importing ALE and relinking. Done. But in a 24p project, the TC of the mxf container is running on 25p..... relinking not possible....

Wow!
That is real news to me.
Talk about bleeding edge...
Will DS conforms work with Clipfinder transcodes?

We have some videos showing how RocketCine-X works, including a new one just posted now.....

this one really shows the benefit of what we are trying to do with Digital Cinema Lessons. The new RocketCine-X software has been out only a few days, and we now have a video tutorial you can already download and watch on how to get native AVID files out of this great new build of RocketCine-X. (GREAT work Deanan on this build - we LOVE it). Details:

"Within this lesson you will be shown how to export MXF files directly out of RocketCineX Build 1707. This will provide an instant import into Avid."

Here's the link:

Enjoy!

Great. Could live without a (paid) tutorial, though, just want to know what the stuff can and cannot do, and if it is available. Sales info and user experience.

Where is all the secrecy around this Rocket Cine-X coming from? Or am I just missing the obvious places to look for this info?

Rocketcine is basically a dailies oriented version of redcinex.
It lets you manage a batch of clips that you can set the look for and then
export to DPX, TIFF, QT, or DNxHD MXF.

it is available. go to red.com/support. not sure if you need to be a camera owner or not though.

as deanan said, it is a processing app. like a combination of Red Alert and Red Rushes.

It will allow you to take a folder full of RAW RED files, add a color look to them all, and then export them to the workable format of your choice.

That's about it. It is new, a work-in-progress, and improving all the time.

Hope that helps.....

Thanks, I got that. So far, I've been using MetaFuze (a lot), and felt this might be MetaFuze on steroids for me. But for now, I've found it pretty hard to get some answers about features and availaibility.

I would like to find out if it (card with software) is (immediately) available to me (Europe, not a camera owner, but an Avid owning film editor), and what the system requirements are. Would like to know the speed results when creating MXF DNxHD36 media from Red 4K files, with burnins. Does CPU speed matter, or is the Rocket card doing all the work anyway? Are drive speeds of influence? Would like to know if there's an option to add a (custom) LUT so these dailies will not look as dull as regularly converted dialies, while maintaining the "grading" choices (color temp, saturation and so forth) as determined on set. Used to try to do this by applying an RLX from RedAlert, but that would override any and all settings made on set. Will gladly pay for such a system if it turns out to suit my needs.

The Red store gives me the option to deposit or pay for the card. What reasons would there be to choose either one over the other?

Thanks.

the card is there to accelerate your .r3d processing workflows.

the software is free, and can do most of what you need, although it is still beta.

there are other softwares, with MANY more to come, that will also support the card as an accelerator. 3cp now supports it. scratch now supports it. many others will follow suit.

Yes, got that. That's what interests me. For me this would be like the purchase of a VTR to accompany my Avid setup. But in order to spend the dough, I need to be a little more sure that it does exactly what I need it to do, today rather than next year. No resellers around to let me test drive, no other owners in the physical neighbourhood to show me the ins and outs, no website or forums with the answers to my questions so far.

Job -

I can't really answer what OS, and other system specs for the card, but next week there will be a step by step guide that shows using it in an Avid workflow. My tests so far have been very successful for creation of Avid DNxHD media. I think there are some tweaks to be made still for 1080p/25, but so far it has been fast and straightforward. I am finding that for same file on same system, transcodes to DNxHD are 30% faster than ProRes. I still need to do some actual timing tests itself, but the debayer is real time, and the write is the extra time. And yes, speed of drives will still affect performance - the write for sure.

Michael

Thanks. According to an email from Red, supported OS is 10.5 or XP2, with Vista "to come". I'm in doubt whether to make the jump or not. 1080/24.00p would be what I would need to do for the coming few months.
