  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redrocket/Rocketcine to transcode Avid DNXHD (wrapped .mxf)

We are hard at work for the next version of the AMT API that has the 24.000fps stuff in it and some other optimiations, etc.

Michael

Not sure what that means. Does Rocket Cine-X handle 4K 24.00fps R3D to DNxHD 1080/24.00p conversion at this time, or not (yet)?
RedCine-X seems unable to do that, only lists 23.976p and 25p...

The SDK from Avid is being tweaked and optimized after a few bugs were found. The PC version of the AMT has 24.000 from what I am told, but not the Mac - recompiling all the sources together and stuff (I am not an engineer). I will be trying this out on PC this coming week. So far my tests have all been on Mac. RED has been very fast at updating the versions of AMT sent to them, so hopefully this will be the same once we hand it over. Should be any day now.

Thats great to hear michael.... direct MXF export of 24p footage is at the moment very relevant to me on mac plattform..... we have a second project running on 25p and handing over the MXF files is great... no import times on the Avid.... the editors have a big smile on their face when the harddisk is coming.....

works a treat for me, one small question though how do I create seperate clips. Am currently getting one long clips from R3D material

The same level of MXF support (and separate clip rendering) is not in REDcineX yet. That's being implemented for an upcoming build.

Deanan, any chance we can get support for .mxf in DV25 PAL 4:2:0 flavor?
There is still a lot of SD offline editing going on here.
Also I'm really missing an option to add post crop padding, or possibly render to a non square format with the "fit width" option (For anamorphic SD)

We can look into adding DV25.

Need more details on what you mean by post crop padding. The current version does do padding based on fit w or h. Which anamorphic SD are you referring to?

Deanan,
We have a specific project which origins in 4k 16:9, using a 1:2.2 frameguide.
For edit dailies we deliver final AVID mxf's in Anamorphic 16:9 720x576 25p DV25 4:2:0, with the image letterboxed to 1:2.2.
We/I have developed a few automated ways to go from 4k 16x9 to our end format, but it aint pretty...

Currently in the newest rocketcinex build, I can select my 1:2.2 crop in the render preset, but choosing the output resolution of 720x576 will either give me a 1:2.20 image stretched to fill the full 4:3 frame or a 1:2.20 letterboxed image inside a 4:3 frame using square pixels (not a 16:9 PAL frame).

To get the correct output i would need to be able to pad the stretched frame inside the 4:3 image to make "stretch" work, or be able to assign a pixel aspect ratio to the output frame to make "fit width" work.

So basically the problem is getting into a non-square pixel format, using a arbitrary cropped aspect.
4k 16x9 will translate into 16:9 SD using the stretch fit mode, but it's not working if you apply a crop, as you need to introduce a bit of padding/letterbox.

Apples Compressor app, has a pretty good geometry pane. It allows you to enter both a crop in pixels with regards to the source, and a padding with regards to the destination bounds. It also allows you to enter a pixel aspect ratio, but that is not crucial when you got the other two options.

Your crop pane does work in another way, but adding a "Add n pixels of black X,Y before the final scaling" option would be great.

Our current homebrew solution does work ok, but it's just so close to being possible inside your standard tool....with rocket accleration and direct mxf support :-)

Hi Anders,

Agreed when in comes to DV25, many production here in Scandinavia are still editing on SD especially advertisemnets which have a fast turn around.

Anyway: Is that like Stretch in REDrushes, you set the dimensions to 720 x 576 and do a Stretch fit which you then change in Media Composer settings afterwards to 16:9?

regards

Marcus

Anders, can you email me a before and after image? I think I understand but the images would help.

Anybody seen this before?

Anybody seen this before?

Hi all, has anybody experienced this when outputting DNxHD 220 10bit?

Any suggestions on fixing this?

thanks
Colin

I have had this happen when I file created a DNxHD file on a system with the 4.0 version of the DNxHD codecs installed, and tried to play it back on a system that was still onthe 3.0/3.5 version ofthe DNxHD codec. The Avid documentation says that it only effects 30i files, but that is clearly not true, since all my 24p files have had the same problem. Updating your codecs from the MC 4.0 installer solves the problem.

Where does it say that? The link I posted does not specifiy and framerate or format. If there's any other documentation that suggests otherwise, I'd like to point that out to Avid, so they may correct that.
