SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Yeah, I'm very accepting of the current price of the Scarlet, I'm more-or-less just hoping the prices drop overtime instead of staying as they are. The cost of media is also a problem. Any $100 consumer-grade SSD could easily sustain the 55MB/s write speed required by the RED Scarlet X, yet we're charged $900. Sure, RED's SSD's are certified and guaranteed to work, plus their smaller 1.8" drives with a more durable interface, and I'd expect to pay a premium for all of that, but $900 just kills it for me. $450 would be much more reasonable. I understand that RED's a business and wants to capitalize on their accessories, but it's one of the few crosses against RED's name compared to other camera manufacturers who don't make their media proprietary. Actually the cost of accessories in general has probably been my only problem with RED's business model. I love everything else about RED and otherwise think their camera bodies are excellent value.

If RED sold a module that accepted standard 2.5" SSD's, I would never doubt RED's ethics or business model again. Even if the module was $1500, it would be an amazing gesture to offer such a product.

Let them make some money some place...

There is no Camera at the price point of Scarlet-X that can do what it does.

None!

I am Gladly buying all the accessories first.

And later after the onslaught of orders are filled, I will purchase the the brain and body.

I'm a patient man, its not like anyone will come out with anything to compete with it for at least five more years!

I hear this comment every once in awhile and it makes me shake my head.

Our accessories have always been not only extremely competitive, but downright a bargain when you compare apples to apples.. same with our cameras.

Our SSD's seem expensive because they require special testing with low yields, special firmware, post assembly testing and on top of that we are not buying these things by the millions... its easy to goto Amazon.com and think we are ripping you off.

Tell me something else that we are unfair with... please. I get personally offended by comments like this.

We'll that explains my previous response about SSD. As for components, I can't believe the price and how LOW (that's right I said low) the handles, rails, etc are. I understand machining and costs and they are such good quality for such a low cost. Look at Zacuto (not bashing) but Zacuto's sells there stuff for so much and Red has components with much more class design intent for so much less and could easily ask for much more.

Man I shouldn't of come to this thread... I was having such a good day. Amazing how one post can just make everything goto shit.
Yeah I've been off REDUser and SU in general the last day or so just to let everything calm down. I'm just to happy and excited and can barely find anywhere to post with pure excitement.

Hope it makes your day better but I got home from editing for 12 hours and my wife had a bottle of Champagne for the occasion. We've only had that Champagne twice. We toast to Scarlet and it being a big part of our future. She also made awesome little Scarlet cookies :) I'll try to grab a picture when she lets me have another. I'm even holding a RED on top of our Stanley Cup cake. Waiting for wedding photo's too. I can't tell you how excited we both are. Instead of refreshing RU it's my email waiting for my bomb squad rep. Thanks for your hard work Jarred.

You can't please everyone apparently. You guys are awesome!! The cost of my Scarlet X is honestly less than a rental for the time I quoted of a Red one package. I think anyone complaining at this point is coming from DSLR or maybe flip video.

I'm signing off, my wife thinks i'm a video nerd. which i have to keep explaining, Digital Cinema, not video.

Easy: Go to the room were you are receiving orders. Look at those numbers. See how many calls you're getting from people in DESPAIR trying to get Epics and Scarlets, and think- and you guys know it- that will only increase. Seriously, congratulations, and great job to all at Red. You are the Ones! As a future costumer, one that already sent his deposit, I'm more than happy. In fact, even though I deposited for the Scarlet, if Stage 4 Epic comes soon with this year's prices, I might switch to that. The Epic is such a value for money that even with the amazing Scarlet features, i feel like the Epic suits me better. I just can't understand all this Epic M users concern, to be honest. Are you guys actually shooting anything with your Epics? HAve you seen Epic 5k 120 fps? I have, and nothing compares... Seriously, just look at that Rihanna Music Video...

Hey Jarred, big guy, yeah I'm talking to you, it's gonna be okay... I'm buying another EPIC after these two Scarlets arrive ... There is a wave at my University I helped create after the Scarlet night... Started getting phone calls ... You were right Paul ... I know I am right because of people like you and Jim. It ain't braggin' if you back it up... You have more than done that, not a fan boy thing, simple 1's and 0's... SO FAR AWAY from everyone, and I mean everyone else... Someone brought you down in here... They may in fact be an actual troll...

Mr. Ellington.

We missed Ya Bruh! Wish you were there!

Jim,I salute you sir,You and your team give us a great camera with in a great price tag.Thank you very much,

And yeah.. we are the only one that makes our own media... Panasonic P2 Cards? Sony SXS cards? yeah.. we are the only ones. Give me a break.

Apologies for the lack of understanding, and I appreciate the reply - it would have been easy to just ignore it, but you didn't which is very much appreciated. I'll be honest, I dramatised the post slightly in order to garner a little more attention, but for anyone not working at RED, it can be hard to imagine what could justify the cost of some of the accessories. I find some accessories like the LCD's to actually be very well priced (the camera brains even better priced), but being an IT guy for many years, the cost of RED's SSD's have always been something I both have and haven't understood. On one hand I can understand the overheads of what you mentioned: testing with low yields, special firmware, post assembly testing, lack of bulk buying power, etc. It would be good however to understand why the existing SSD market wasn't leveraged further. I may have no clue, but I'd think RED could strike up a deal with a company like OCZ or Crucial to rebrand a line of their SSD's, maybe with a couple of firmware tweaks to make them more suitable for use in the camera.

As for other companies having propriety media, I wasn't meant to imply that they didn't. I was thinking along the lines of high-end DSLR's which use off-the-shelf CF cards, and the days of tapes and film. SSD's are quite different to CF and magnetic media I know, but that's what I was thinking of at the time. Probably an unfair comparison.

Either way, now that the Scarlet's out, I'd hope to see prices drop on core accessories like the SSD's as volume increases. If you guys have sold a 100,000 Scarlet's but prices remain the same on those core accessories, I'll definitely start to get a little suspicious :)

You have restored my faith though Jarred, so all is not lost. In fact, you've demonstrated the thing I like most about RED which is of course the involvement with the community and your transparency.

No 8X Fixed. We had terminal issues with the lens. If you are sad, just think about us. All those development dollars down the drain.

Bummer. :-(

I asked Graeme if the 8X fixed was smoke and mirrors to side track the competition.

He said it was completely Legit, it just didn't work out.

Honestly I think what we got is nothing less than a Blessing and clearly it is what we were meant to have.

Thank You!

OK.. thanks for the response. All good now :)

OK, I will first admit that I have not read all of the 5 or 7 hundred posts on this and other threads. So if this has been answered, forgive.

I looked at the spec and there is apparently only 1 aspect ratio 1.9:1. I was looking forward to using my LOMO anamorphics and shooting 2.35:1. Is there an anamorphic solution for Scarlet-X?

Thanks
