SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Well, this baby costs exacly what I figured it would - but the specs are much better than I thought. Looks like a great camera and I hope to see many new indie features shot with it coming soon. Rock on RED - I expect to use one of these someday--SOMEDAY. :)

I think the announcement was great. Nothing like this has ever been available at this price range. Gotta start somewhere guys. You can't hang your hopes so much on things like the 2/3rd plan for a while and other things. They have to develop this stuff from scratch almost! If they had to develop it and realized it wouldn't be up to par given how much money they'd put in already and lots of other issues then so be it, good for them for not doing it half way and releasing it crippled.

I'm still going to hold off on getting one although I wanted to buy so bad last night LOL. I have a few things to take care of first.

Either way it's a great day to be a filmmaker. We have tools in our hands that are truly revolutionary and at prices we can manage. $14k might be too much for some, but with some saving and some effort it's attainable for mostly anyone. If you can't afford it no matter what, then perhaps shooting with a tool like this just isn't for you? You just gotta come to peace with that, and go out and get some work done. Maybe someday you can work your way up, until then...keep on shooting and don't worry about the fact you're still using 1080p or an older camera. Everybody started with something...

Jim, Jarred, RED TEAM...

Firstly I have to say thanks, I think a lot of thought and a hell of a lot of listening to your customers really came into play when figuring out the Scarlets SPECs and prices.
You guys really impressed me today in the way you handled all feedback from your small and large customers.

To be honest, I was shitting myself, I new you were coming out with a 4k chip... just new it. But what I was scared of was you were going to be to giving by spec-ing up the Scarlet to such a high level making me hate you for making my EPICs seem to less special.. But alas . I needed not to worry.

I found a lot of trust in RED after this decision, A lot of trust... I thank you for proving to me that you actually listen and I think by listening as you have you have just created even more loyalty to your brand.

Congratulations on a very well thought out decision in this cameras direction, price point and performance.

You won't have satisfied everyone's wims and wishes... and we all know that's an impossible task. Those people will move onto what they think are greener pastures, so everyone wins.

Secondly... Canon C300.
I'm am a Canon fan... Alway will be, but to be honest... But I think you just gave that company a stiff lesson in what not to do in front of a big crowd. Don't over sell and under deliver. !
I was really hoping they were going to come out with something substantial, but... sadly not. I did expect more from them and I'm sure you guys did too.
And I'm sure they will sell plenty of them, but it wasn't really worth all the hype.
Enough said about that.

So.. I'm glad the day went well, but thank god it's over... My nerves were shot and my sleep patterned destroyed.. Back to normality!

Now... Question..

Did anyone see PLAYBACK working at the SCARLET launch at RED?

Was it impressive? Quick to use? fast? Simple ? What did you guys think, Did Jim drop any release dates? :))))))

I placed an order for Scarlet, but I´m a bit confused on this red europe talk?
At order, I paid with my debit card that has a european address. But my shipping address is to a courier in new jersey. Perhaps this should be corrected if red is also shipping cameras from europe? or..?

jim said playback is coming by the scarlet release date. I didn't get to try it myself but saw people playing with it and it seemed very easy to use.

I think my question got lost in the excitement! :)

1) Does the Scarlet have built in ND?

2) Are their body dimensions anywhere? I tried looking through the site.

3) Is there weight and dimensions for the hand grip, lcd, SSD and battery?
(Trying to determine if some of my equipment wouldn't work with the Scarlet)

Thanks!

America needs more companies like Red. They are creating jobs by expanding their manufacturing facilities to meet the demand for the Epic and Scarlet. The rest of America should take note we need more manufactures like Red, companies who pull parts from over seas but still create jobs here. Companies who don't just repackage the same thing but push the boundaries of their industries.

Now I hear that there is the possibility of tours of the new manufacturing facilities. Is this true and how do get in?

2) Jarred Said somewhere in this thread that the dimensions are exactly the same as the EPIC, except for some of the design in the lower right side (the SCARLET is a flat panel and the EPIC has some volumes there).

3) RED also stated that all the accessories from EPIC are SCARLET compatible

1) I think it clearly has not ND built in, but this one I don't know for sure.

Cheers!

Hehe, well that would be good if there were values listed for these specs for the epic as well on red.com, but there isn't.

Well, a lot of time has passed. A lot of waiting and hope.
Things change. Red has changed.

For many of us Scarlet is not what we were let to belive, but, things change.

Somehow, I have a feeling that many of us have been left out, many of us that are
not doing high budget things.

Many of us small people that stood by you from day 1 and always promoting you
around our friends and coworkers. Beliving in you. Defending your vision.

Now you are in clouds, shooting for the stars... All the best to you

Do not look back

I am so sad

Well that was a... heartbreaking read.

I say this as a currently broke and unemployed individual: this is actually the perfect price. Rental houses will get these eventually and I imagine packaged prices for those will be extremely manageable. This higher pricetag is actually a blessing in disguise because we are getting a much better camera for what really isn't that much more.

Thanks Mark. All the cameras at RED last night had Playback working. We will post a public beta build well before the end of November.

No built in ND... it does share the changeable filter tray though that Epic has.

I own two Epics.

I don't like to say this but it's the truth.

The Scarlet-x to me is an Epic.

It's like two Intel CPU that has the same name but different in clock speed, they might even come from the same factory.

Scarlet-x is like a CPU clocked in at 2.4GHz and Epic is like a CPU clock in at 3.2GHz.

Scarlet-x and Epic even share the same sensor.

When you compare the two, the only different is power.

They both fit in the same socket on the motherboards.

That make all accessories unquestionably and totally compatible.

Hehe, well that would be good if there were values listed for these specs for the epic as well on red.com, but there isn't.

Hey, Rick!

You can find the EPIC body dimensions in the EPIC User Guide at red.com/support - Appendix K: Technical Data.

Hope this helps, and with Jarred reply I think you'll almost have it all done, right? :)

Cheers!

My oh my how far you've come RED. In such a short time.

Seems like yesterday, and also a lifetime ago, that Crossing the Line was being shot and screened on RED ONE prototypes. What was that, 5 years ago? Way back in the old days when you were a scam, and fools, and the butt of your competitor's jokes.

Oh how the tables have turned.

You have achieved truly GREAT things, and have allowed so many of us to achieve great things at the same time. You literally changed the entire industry.

And yesterday, you did it again. The best thing about you guys is that you refuse to rest on your laurels. I feel that for everyone at RED, the thinking there is....what fun would that be? It's much more fun to continue stirring the pot, shit disturbing and generally keeping the rest of the industry honest.

Jim, Jarred, Graeme, Ted, Deanan and SO MANY others in the RED army.....stand up and take a bow. And I don't give a sweet shit if others feel this is 'fanboy talk'. It's not. I call it as I see it.

And to be honest, if RED didn't step up to the plate and promise, then deliver, the 'impossible', my life would be vastly different. I owe a debt of gratitude to RED. At Bling Digital, we decided to jump in head first in the early days, shoulder to shoulder with many others here, and rather than spend valuable karmic energy bashing what RED was promising and doing, we decided that we should roll up our sleeves and help the industry adapt to this new and radically different way of doing things.

Best decision of my life, as I continue to have an absolute blast doing what I love to do.

I rarely post like this, but I was reflecting on things today, and Jim, Jarred and their army really have, and continue to, inspire me.

Can't wait to see what the ride is like for the NEXT 5 years.

Chris.. gonna print that one out and put it on the wall. Thanks man.

Does it bother anyone else that there is no option to chose between 1:1 pixel crop and FF resolution downscaling when it comes to format recording options?

Seems cumbersome to have to re-frame a shot or change your lens if going from 4K 25fps to 1K 120fps....

Is it possible there will be a firmware update to support this??

If so.... :001_tt1:
