SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

I think its great RED is still helping the less fortunate. Since the scarlet comes standard with a canon mount at least they will sell some glass

I'm a bit on the disapointement side.

No more 120 fps at 3K, no more fixed lenses (was I the only one to like that feature ?) and a bit more expansive it seems...
But great sensor, great possibilities... Mmmmh, I can't wait anyway to have one !

Quick question : for slow motion it's still sensor cropping or does the camera downsize the images in real time ?

No, it's windowing. Real time scaling is MORE load on the processors – to meet this price point it needs LESS. Think about owning a Scarlet and renting an EPIC when you need high-rez slo-mo.

I think this is clever, RED could only move upward with all those AF10X, FS100 and a bunch of DSLRs with improved scaling around.

IMHO RED has hit the sweet spot in the market. It leaves C300 in the dust.
OMG, how could they do that, build a decent sensor (maybe), better AA and RS, but record with less data-rate than a hacked GH2?

Just to get some further info.

Is the HDSDI out clean 4.2.2 10 bit and can any form of LUT be applied.

Ideally we would want RAW but others do want some form of external prores external recorder. Im assuming a KIPro would work fine.

First: What a great announcement!

BUT. I was looking forward to have two versions of Scarlet. Is it confirmed from Red that the 8x is dropped? I read something about a great struggle with lens issues...? Does anyone know for sure?
Please don`t drop it Red. For many people the 8x is perfect! I know you guys make cameras for the movie industry. But i hope you also will make cameras aimed at television...

Congratulations!
You are now king of the hill.

So smart to merge the two systems together. T-ford camera.

And already a new sensor soon coming out. Very smart thinking!

Thanks guys for an incredibly fun night! Not the fairest fight really, but we all saw that one coming, right? Scarlet-X looks fantastic, pretty amazing to get a rock solid B-Cam in addition to an EPIC at this price! Or having a great A-Cam that blows sooo many competitors out of the water and knowing that you can even go better with another, relatively inexpensive camera. What you guys did / do is absolutely mind-blowing. Thank you for letting all of us be a part of it! Without the forum, I would feel like a total nerd, but being here as part of the nerd-herd makes it quite cool! :)

The force sure was disrupted tonight. What a great job!

In the 2 years since i heard about scarlet, i saved 5000 bucks. $6000 by December.
Oh well, I'll wait for the dragon update. I'm glad the fixed lens was done away with!

Jim, and RED Team!

What an honor and privilege it was this evening to be present at this historic occasion. Thanks once again for your hospitality.

I remember posting some pretty wild guesses about what Scarlet would be. It seems you have once again pulled off the impossible! ;-)

Congratulations and Thank You!

Incredible, Jim. 4k upgrading was a very wise move and exactly what I hoped for. - Unbelievable camera from an unbelievable company.

Thank you for the Scarlet.

Mmmh, and is there any built in ND filters in the camera ?

I´ve been here sincle like 2007(8?), and registered 2009, waiting for this night and... you lost me guys. No fixed, three times the price... Bye! :-(
Regardless of what was announced tonight, there would be some priced out of the game. I actually thought it was going to be much worse and am beyond impressed with what RED was able to bring to the table.

They had a choice to satisfy the lowest common denominator based on sheer price alone or shift gears and focus on professional products with real lasting significance in the industry. There is no question in my mind that they made the right choice. As much as I feel for those for whom Scarlet is now out of reach, it's so important that RED draws a line in the sand and says that barely acceptable is just not good enough. They are the sole driving force pushing things forward in this industry, requiring the other manufacturers to stop dribbling out technology at slower-than-snail paces if they want to stay competitive. 4K at under $10,000 in 2011 is a miracle in itself. They have significantly lowered the cost of entry for true digital cinema cameras with the announcement of Scarlet-X; it's something that benefits everyone whether we end up being Scarlet customers or not.

If you can't buy, you can always rent. But god love these guys for making it possible at all.

SCARLET'S AMAZING - some reasonable questions though...Thanks!

SCARLET'S AMAZING - some reasonable questions though...Thanks!

WOW. What an incredible night and what an awesome achievement for the RED Team. Been lurking here for awhile, while shooting with cameras all the way from 5D to Red One and good old 35mm film, but I have always wanted to OWN a Red and be part of the family - and now I finally can be without breaking my coffers. I was almost ready to plunk down for Epic but this makes way more sense for my business right now and the work I do. SCARLET here we come! (Fail Canon)

All that said...I do have some nagging questions that are bugging me before I place an order. Would really appreciate some answers from the Red team when they have a second (I know you guys must be busy!) I think answers to most of these questions would benefit most of the prospective buyers.

1) Biggest thing for me: Since the Scarlet is still 5K for stills, but shoots 4K for motion...is even 24p cropped from the sensor, and therefore all our lenses will have crop factors even when we're NOT shooting slow - motion? If so, what is the crop factor? If it's not worse than 1.6 then it's not that big of a deal, but that is one thing that's bugging me.
I completely understand the crop factor for slow-mo work within this price range, but would like to get the specifics when shooting regular 24p.
EDIT: I know there's always a crop for Super35 from FF - I mean crop beyond what we are all used to with Super35.

2) I know Dragon's a bit of a ways off...but would it be safe to see we will see even better low-light performance (for Scarlet too)? (This is probably the ONLY area the competition edges in at RED - though most of the time we're not shooting without lights at night anyway...just asking though. Would love to try some candle-lit Kubrick stuff!)

3) I see from the info released that Scarlet can't shoot anamorphic like Epic or Red One. I understand why that was dropped from the Scarlet model, but can you at least shoot with Anamorphic Frame Guides in 4K? (And have those guides appear as meta data in post so you can crop accurately?) If I can do that, all is well for me.

4) AUDIO: been trying to find this out on the forums, but can't seem to find straight answers. Usually I run separate audio, but it would be wonderful to have scratch audio on the Scarlet to facilitate easy syncing. Those imports - they are balanced, correct? But no Phantom power? If you add an adapter box like Wooden Camera's does that add phantom power, or just XLR inputs? Just asking since I own a Sennheiser MKH 416 XLR Phantom Powered mic and a Rode Video Mic (1/8")...but I'm not sure if either will work. What sort of mic will work? Thanks!

5) Are the dimensions different than the Epic, besides the loss of the top/bottom ridges? What accessories for Epic won't work for Scarlet? The Backpack system? Pro I/O and Battery Modules to come? Top plates and bottom plates? Would love to know so I can order (or not order) those accessories accordingly. I know the FAQ said everything works on both...but the RED store's compatibility markers seem to say otherwise on some items (the backpack for example and the assault plate)

6) Same latitude as Epic I understand. Is that a more or less agreed upon 13 or 13.5 stops? If so, that's friggin amazing.

7) Still a shame you can't run the EVF with the Touch LCD, but I suppose you could always use an SDI monitor or an SDI or HDMI EVF instead. Guess that's not really a question, sorry.

8) Will the Scarlet/Epic work the upcoming new Canon Lenses? I don't see why they wouldn't (would just require coding for the new EF lenses right?)

9) LITTLE NON-REASONABLE QUESTION: Is grey the final color? I'm a sucker for matching hehe...is there any safe, lasting, non-warranty-voiding paint process you would recommend if I am actually vain enough to want to get it painted black on my own to match the accessories?

Thanks for your amazing camera and all the power it's gonna bring me. And thanks for hopefully answering my questions!

Best,

Yes it is cropped when you go down in resolution. That is how you can achieve higher frame rates with the Scarlet's 50Mb/s bandwidth.

Dragon is incredible... We really are just getting started. Think about how much of an improvement the MX sensor was over our first sensor.. and that was when we had no idea what we were doing :)

Scarlet will have firmware updates just like our other cameras and we always try to squeeze as much as possible as we can as we improve the code. That's not a Yes, but not a No.

Scarlet supports +48V @10mA Phantom power on each channel. Just not enabled in the software yet.

The only things that wont work on Scarlet is the bottom right Tactical side plate for EPIC.. as there is no ribs there. Everything else is the same mechanical dimensions ( minus the top grill is different )

6) Same latitude as Epic I understand. Is that a more or less agreed upon 13 stops? If so, that's friggin amazing.

Ask 5 different people and they will all have different numbers between 13 and 14 stops... We test 13.5

7) Still a shame you can't run the EVF with the Touch LCD, but I suppose you could always use an SDI monitor or an SDI or HDMI EVF instead. Guess that's not really a question, sorry.

with the module(s) that have EVF/LCD ports you can.

8) Will the Scarlet/Epic work the upcoming new Canon Lenses? I don't see why they wouldn't (would just require coding for the new EF lenses right?)

Don't see why they wouldn't.. except i don't know if the lenses they announced tonight have autofocus. I was told the new Canon Movie camera with Canon mount does not support Autofocus?

9) LITTLE DETAIL: Is grey the final color? I'm a sucker for matching hehe...is there any safe, lasting, non-warranty-voiding paint process you would recommend if I am actually vain enough to want to get it painted black on my own to match the accessories?

Final Color.

I've read the entire thread + FAQ, and I still can't find this question answered: is there any difference in weight between SCARLET-X and EPIC?

Also - will I be able to pull a SCARLET Canon mount from the box and also run it on my EPIC? I'm assuming this is a yes, but would like to know for sure. I'm still waiting on a back-ordered Canon mount, but, for the price difference, it might make more sense to just buy the whole camera!

Excellent work, RED. Breathtaking, really. You have walloped this industry right between the eyes. A knock-out punch.

Made in America, easy to buy.
