  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

J
Did anyone see PLAYBACK working at the SCARLET launch at RED?

Was it impressive? Quick to use? fast? Simple ? What did you guys think, Did Jim drop any release dates? :))))))

Saw it, played with it. Fast, easy, powerful. there was scrubbing. mmm. cool stuff man.

I read through 70% of this thread (so long), was wondering if there was published information on how long a single redvolt would last on Scarlet?

Probably not very long (maybe 2 hours?). We bought red bricks, also the way our local rental handles epics. Our shoots are often 10 hours up with camera constantly on.

5K is 60% more pixels than 4K. Shooting motion at 5K makes a difference. And that 60% more takes a lot more horsepower. So is framerates Important to some people.. which again takes more horsepower.. and so does compression. ...

hi jarred, I wanted to bug you guys a little more... I asked the question before so sorry about it, but here I go again:
although I understood that the scarlets power comes from hardware and has not really anything to do with software at this point, I still wanted to know

- if it might be possible in the future to up the frame rate with a compression of 7:1 at 2k or 1080p?
- if you abandoned the idea of the speed bursts, because for most ideas that would be sufficient and help us out a lot.
Is that possible to come in a future update?
- while I certainly love the option, of 120fps @ 1k, where do you see usage of 1k and does it intercut at all with higher res images?

Sorry for begging, or for re-asking, just trying to understand. Thanks a ton!

Cheers!

Has the amount of the end-of-year price increase been announced ?

For scarlet the 2012 price has been announced to $9700 for brain only. So you'll be missing the SSD side module and Al canon mount. Sums up to $2000 minus $50 from today's price of $9750.

Jarred, what about aspect ratio options at different resolutions (like Full Frame, 2:1, 2.4:1, Anamorphic 2:1, 16:9) on Scarlet-X?

I'm assuming they are the same as on EPIC (except the 5K mode). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I would also like to hear more about audio: Optional 4 channel, and AES / EBU digital audio. How much is that and does it involve additional hardware?
I need 4 audio channels sometime....
Am waiting for the call from England....

You decide what quality is enough, as I said, if 4k is enough and you dont need 4.5k or anamorphic or 5k or >24fps then why don't you sell your epic for a scarlet? For many, 1080p is enough or 11 stops of latitude is enough so you could grab an FS100 with an external recorder. If you bought EPIC, you had a reason for it, if that reason no longer exists, sell it, but if it does then try to be happy with it since no other camera does what EPIC can do. This is basically computer hardware, people pay $1k for 3ghz chips now when $200 2ghz chips that do the same work are coming out in a couple weeks/months even if they came from the same same wafers. It's the cost of cutting edge, and it keeps the market moving forward forward since profits from the high end cover the R&D that makes the high capacity low end market possible. Better silicon is sold first at a premium and drops in value fastest, but you buy it because it will make you more money and faster and now.

RED may make some customers mad, but they have to sell cameras, and better for them that they eat into some of their own profits than that someone else eats into theirs. Not sure how they are making money on Scarlet, but if they are, they will make a killing.

Okay, 11 or 12 stops at acquisition and you have a choice at 3840 x 1920 or 1920 x 1080 which will look better in the final result?

Manfrotto PRO 100... nice head.

hey jarred, I got the same head here... what pieces did you use to mount the scarlet to it? can't really identify the parts.
is that just the dovetail quick release or is there something added to it? and is the mounting plate the manfrotto one or do you use a fitting RED plate?

btw. why does the scarlet have a different side plate, which forces you to produce different tactical ribs and cages?
is that just design, or is there something else about it interesting to know?

I was reading baout the price increaseof the Scarlet X from 2012, why is the price increasing? And shooting at 4k how much footage will the 64gb SSD module hold?

Thank's to David, Scarlet-X data rate per frame (multiply per framerate):

Single Scarlet 5k 16 bit raw frame uncompressed: 27.65 Mega Bytes.
4k frame uncompressed: 17.7 MB
QHD frame uncompressed: 16.6 MB
3k frame uncompressed: 9.9MB
2k frame uncompressed: 4.4 MB

4k 24fps @6:1 compression 70.8 MB/sec
2k 60fps @4:1 compression 66 MB/sec

So it would seem to max out around 70 MB/sec range.

Just checked the data sheet for Scarlet-X and without knowing anything about how it works, it seems like there are some workable solutions for more than 12 fps. For example the aspect ratio is not 2:1 but what appears to be FF. It also shoots 5K at either RC 3:1 (8 fps) or RC 5:1 (12 fps). Could it squeeze out more fps if it recorded in 2:1 aspect ratio at a RC 12:1?

My guess is — it can, but it won't. Not until the Dragon upgrade rolls out or EPIC gets more than 5K resolution (I don't remember the details of the upgrade). You have to separate two products and 5K motion is an "Epic only" ground for the time being.

I would fully understand that.

From what I understand, the scarlet is bandwidth limited in two critical areas, the first is the number of pixels per second which can be moved from the sensor to the ASICs. The second the ASICs are less powerful versions of the EPIC chips (can only run at lower clock speeds, if you will), limiting the maximum achievable compression ratio (more work). The two, limitations are likely very closely linked.

But that raises an interesting point. It seems to be all about the number of pixels... will Scarlet allow me to shoot 25FPS 5K at an aspect ratio of 2.96? 5120x1728 just sound like such a fun aspect ratio.

I don't know if I can afford it, I'm not a rental house, I'd made some shorts, and nowdays most of my work is for tv, most of it in SD!

I was long waiting for Scarlet S35/Epic-S... It's a hard investment for me, but It's my option to be a owner, not a renter. Just thanks for have this option. I'm a RED user and believer from the beginning, I was the second to use a RED One in Andalusia (after mr. Soderbergh). But, I was looking for Epic-S, not for a Scarlet fixed. And as Epic-S/Scarlet S35 replace… Epic-S was 5k HDRx motion for 12k, and this Scarlet-X is 1/4 power for 10k...

It's very unusual that Red give us less that they used to say. And I'm sure that it's for a good reason. EPIC-M buyers are complaining about Epic-Scarlet are too near (5K at 12fps vs 5K at 120fps it's 1/10 of power!), world has changed, avaliable Dragon upgrade, etc... I'm not complaining to Red Tem, seeing this Scarlet-X as it is, It's a great camera, a miracle for the price and years away from competition. But It's noticeable less than the announced Epic-S for a bit less price.

But despite it, I love the camera as It is. I hope I could buy one, or continue saving up for an Epic. As always, congrats and thanks because i'm sure that is the perfect camera for a lot of people. It's real and it's ready to ship.

Thanks for all, and for democratized 4k cinema... Again.

P.D. Sorry for my english!
