  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic updates...

But you get two fastest available zooms (cine or still) at 14-35mm f/2.0 and 35-100mm f/2.0 both from Olympus.

Since they only feed a small 4/3 sensor, and smaller sensors have lower performance than larger ones at the same f-stop, these 4/3 f2 lenses only perform about the same as full-frame (36x24) lenses at f4. Since f2.8 lenses are available for that format, those are the fastest zooms available, not the f2 lenses for 4/3.

I have a feeling Thursday's news will bring new hope to projects that otherwise couldn't be accomplished (i hope for my sake!). RED revitalized visual story telling by providing the means for a Quality image to those who couldn't afford such access before; a steroid shot for independent production.

Hopefully Scarlet will mean a new level of accessibility.
PL mount por favor?!

In suspense...

An F2 lens on a 4/3 camera would be F4 on a 35mm, to get F2 on 35mm it would have to be twice as big, everything else being equal. It is still F2 on a 4/3, the rest is up to the sensitivity of the sensor.

Just to clarify, I see Scarlet's original specs as being incredible. I know Jim has defended more than well enough about why the new DSLRs don't scare him a bit, and I certainly agree a nice internal lens with enough manual controls and consistent aperture and focus throughout the zoom range would be nice and welcome. Heck it can be a 1/3 inch CMOS that does 1080p with less noise than an HVX for less than 3K and I'm still buying one.

But if it's a digital stills camera as well as a digital motion picture camera, it NEEDS interchangeable lenses in order to remain competitive. Maybe it's not, and it's just the same already known Scarlet: Professional, affordable, small and incredible.

But if the guy can take care of the hype, I can certainly take care of my expectations. :D

I don't think DSMC and Scarlet have merged. Different cameras for different markets.

I totally agree, again. Plus, IMO, it is in their marketing interest to blow the doors off everything as much as possible as fast as possible to get RED to be as established of a brand as possible, as soon as possible... lol... might sound confusing, sorry. But for the company's benefit the best thing right now would be to continue the R1 trend of stunning everyone, and to do so till Red is accepted by large production companies. To continue to twist our arm to the point where we can't help but buy their toys so that we teach ourselves how to use the stuff and the support workforce gets established. He needs to take over a piece of the big-time pie and I don't think a self made billionaire would want anything less. If anything he likely wants more than just a little piece. :)
It will take time, but to get the locomotive running and considering the funding and line of credit he must have available, he must be considering a long period of aggressive investment, a continuation of what he started... I personally see him keeping the pace for an absolute minimum of two years (that must have come up not long ago) and personally I'd guess about 5 years at least or R1 type releases... all while gradually building up the support for, and reliability of his products till they reach his creme de la creme standards.

oops... sorry about the rant.

Well said. If Jim did release a 35mm Scarlet that could shoot high FPS in Redcode RAW for under 5 grand, he would sell not thousands of cameras, but millions. But if he's worried about "undercutting" a couple thousand R1s, he will put out a mediocre product. Something tells me we don't need to second guess Jim's brain or his business savvy.

Will RED be defeated by the same kind of inertia that made them possible as a camera company or will they manage to jump over themselves into an even bigger field?

The 13-th of November will tell.

The big five were delaying the introduction of new technologies and were milking customers with obsolete camera lineups. That created the vacuum for RED to fill.

But will now RED become victim of the same approach, protecting the R1?

We'll see.

The full trade-in policy and the re-design saga tells me that they're OK.

Otherwise, the GREEN Digital Cinema Company should step in and steal our hearts...

I think that R1 owners have a golden ticket regardless of what he puts out... so if he can drop a miracle on the assembly lines he will. He said he'll still honor the full $17,500, for Epic, and I think it will be for whatever you want, whenever you want it. I think R1 owners are going to be taken care of one way or an other... might let them turn in an R1 for two or three Scarlets even, :).

Or a couple hundred CF cards.

He wouldn't sell millions. The market isn't big enough for such a camera. Maybe a hundred thousand over a couple years.

I hope they can fulfill the demand and (even more important) can support and service that amount of cameras.

I'm just glad

I'm just glad

I've made it to the eve of, without blowing a gasket. I've been waiting for this Scarlet release for a long time...but as a first time poster I cannot wait to hear tomorrow's news.
