  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

I have tested the new firmware for 2 hours now.
So far no problems at all!

Notes so far
- First impression is. Wow, this feels GREAT. Feels much better
- New interface is MUCH better on the 9" screen. If you dont have a 9" screen I seriously recommend to try it out. The difference is incredible.
- Timelapse. Fantastic!! Missed this featur every much.
- Preroll. Great. I didnt find a way to turn this feature off though except by recording. Will test a bit more, its a bit confusing when its on/off.
- Powersave. Works great. Now the screen turns into power mode after 30 seconds. After 2 minutes the camera goes into power save and in 4 minutes the camera turns off. I will test how much difference this makes on power.

Btw, I did a test of the speed of the 512GB SSD. Copied it to the new Retina Apple laptop. It took 41 minutes to copy the whole disk. This means the read/write real speed is 200MB/sec.

Wishlist
- In Playback the top slider is now smaller. This is good, but the colors could be a bit clearer. It's hard to see where the cursor is in the screen.
- A way of magnifying in playback, even if its only a still image would be very useful. Perhaps I missed this? I would use it to check focus.
- A more stylized interface would make the UI really shine. Could create some sketches how it could look.
- Erhm, deleting files would be great. An administrator password would make this more safe.
All in all. A fantastic upgrade that makes me proud to be a Red owner.
Great job everyone!

We intend you to use Pre-Record by mapping 'Record: Start Pre-Record' to a key (or soft key on touch LCD) and pressing that key when you want to begin Pre-Recording. That is, Pre-Record is not really an on/off feature like HDRx is, rather starting Pre-Record is an action like starting a normal record.

Notes:
- The record indicator will show when you are actively Pre-Recording
- There is no way to cancel Pre-Record other that starting and then ending the record.

You know guys, I think it's time for RED to produce a wee tutorial on black shading and what you can do with it to get the best from your camera. I know black shading is dependent on exposure, and ambient temperature; should I be thinking about building a little library of different exposure/temperature calibration maps to use as required? Just what's the latitude? How far can you move from an arbitrary standard (say, 24FPS / 180 shutter / 20C) before you should consider applying a different calibration?

Thanks!

Mike
i couldnt agree more..very important!

Ramping will work at any rez but is limited to the capabilities of the Scarlet in general. So, you could ramp from 3 fps to 12 fps at 5K but you don't get any "new" performance out of it.
Hmmmm I thought that was the point, to get a short burst for slow mo at higher resolutions!

Ahhhh well I'm happy with the new interface alone!

A few people have asked about Enhanced Auto Focus, so here's a short explanation.

Enhanced Auto Focus is a new Auto Focus algorithm that offers better performance. However, it comes with a cost; you lose control over one monitor - either the HDMI or HDSDI. Whichever monitor you chose to give up for Enhanced Auto Focus will be forced to clean with a set resolution and update frequency. Enhanced Auto Focus also provides an improved Confirm mode with a visual indicator of how in focus the region is.

Not true - you can assign another key for REC- OFF, which cancels pre-record.

CAn we cancel Pre-record all-together? It does not seem possible inside the settings. I don't wish to use pre-record for every single shot...in fact very few shots if ever.

....that said, I'm shooting underwater and my Rec button is set to an arm that only connects to RECORD....so mapping to another area is not so easy for me...i can do it, but it's not in a convenient location---I'd ask RED to give us ability to turn ON/OFF PreRecord Please.

Start-up time :
Epic-X with firmware 3.3.18 = approx 18 secs
Epic-x with firmware 4.x (beta) = 1 min & 15 secs (longer than the latest RedOne build).
Anybody else have this problem ? Or should I re-instal 4.x ?

Pre-record : is the need to activate pre-record each time a temporary or finl 'solution'. RedOne days, once selected, it was always there. Are times shorter than 10sec possible (user input) ?

Sleep : perception of that only the LCD is switched off (fans stil going) ... is there any documentation that describes what goes to 'sleep' ?

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all ...

What do you mean by much longer? I believe boot time may have increased slightly, but I wouldn't characterize it as much longer.

You need to activate pre-record each time you want to engage it. One way to do so is to press the button on the pre-record tab another way is to map a key to 'Record: Start Pre-Record'.

If the vertical bands persist please open a support ticket and send in a log file.

Sleep mode does more than just LCD Sleep.

Those boot times are NOT normal. Even the 3.3.x (I assume you mean 3.3.14 since 3.3.18 doesn't exist) time seems a bit long. Please open a support ticket and send in a log file so we can see what is going on.

For now Pre-Record is activated on a per-record basis. However, we always take into consideration user input for future enhancements, so feel free to describe what would make your day-to-day lives easier.

Sleep mode does more than just turn off the LCDs. Various internal sub-systems are turned off to save power. The fan system is running "normally" during Sleep to ensure the proper temperature of the brain.

Mark,

BRILLANT!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, I assigned the bottom SH big and small to work.

Your suggestion is what makes RedUser and Red cameras so wonderful.

THANKS again! Back to work!

Happy Holidays!

My boot time is the same as earlier, 12 seconds by the one one thousand, two one thousand count!

And now there is SLEEP, WOW, this is great for in the blind time!

Frame averaging is excellent - I've done this in post quite a bit using either 2 or 4 frame oversampling, great to have in camera... BUT

Wouldn't it be cool to utilise the motion-conjoined HDRx style capture to keep regular motion blur?

ie. at 4x intended frame rate capture two 90deg. frames sequentially, dump two, and capture the next two. Of course I can do this in post with 360 shutter and high fps, but it takes a bit of post work to implement. Would love it in camera too :)

Love these big updates :D

Add my Vote for dropped frames in Frame AVeraging. That would be awesome to keep motion blur CorreCt.
BUT!! This is a FANTASTIC build in my eyes, Coulnt Come at a better time as I am lining up a LOT of timelapse work ahead. Thanks a BILLION! ( and preroll and on and on ... superb!)
