  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic bag - 2013 edition

Jason, you're making me nervous with your screen attached like that in your bag! Put a quick release on it and keep it tucked away.

Just an update.. I've been flying/travelling with my current bag setup.. I highly recommend it. I have a DIT station in my backpack and a fully loaded Scarlet in the shoulder bag.

I'm a huge fan of Gura Gear bags (http://www.guragear.com/) I've owned mine for 3 years and it's travelled across the world with me. It fits a fairly well kitted out Scarlet pretty well although I want to get a hard case for rentals/shipping.

It's extremely well made and very lightweight so you're not loading up your back unnecessarily. The price is high but honestly, it's worth it. I also love the butterfly style of opening as its great in tight spaces on sets where you can't always open up massive bags easily.

You're catching on :)

Hi guys, I'm a bag fanatic!! I brought my epic built with a rig into a camera shop and tried everything out. If you want a built epic with rig and matte box, the best bet is a Petrol Deeca 5 doctors bag. Lots of other room. The Petrol 3 is not high enough to fit a LCD and a rig under it. The Kata pictured earlier with the C300, same thing. I can load my epic, with full rig, shape handles and matte box. Bet the clutch would even fit into this case. It gets heavy and awkward to carry though.

The two bag system is a great idea, been doing it for a bit. I have Fstop for carry on which I can't say enough. Then I use a the petrol decca 5, which I put inside a travel duffle bag, and pack breakable great. It's great, and people don't realize it's got expensive gear in it like a pelican.

The f-stop Loita bag is great for traveling, it fits for carry-on, has 3 different sizes of Internal camera units, so you can swap them as needed. The large first my epic and scarlet disassembled. Once I get to my location, I build the epic and use the petrol case, I pull the ICU out of the Fstop pack and use it for lenses, and put my clothes in the Fstop. Awesome set up. I sometime climb mountains to shot and the FSTOP is great for that.

Here's my run & gun layout -- Lowepro Magnum 650 AW. Not small but it fits almost everything I need and I can get rolling fast.

Pics (done pretty fast sorry if they're not the best)

Hey Scott, what kind of setup do you have where your Hyperdeck is mounted? I have mine underneath a gini dovetail, but I'm exploring other solutions.

Here's my setup:

That looks good, Jason. Currently I have it mounted on a WC Battery Slide attached to my shoulder rig (here's a phone-camera pic from a few weeks back)

Nice thing is it will also slide up and lay flat if I want to use it without the giant battery where it is in the photo. (In fact you can see it laying flat in the last pic in my camera bag post above)

Is there such a thing as a comfortable backpack camera bag (that fits a minimalist Epic/Scarlet rig) that also has wheels? Everything I've seen/tried with wheels is basically a carry-on luggage that just so happens to have shoulder straps attached... I'm looking for the opposite (comfortable backpack camera bag first and foremost, that has wheels to roll around on when back in civilization.)

Nice Stuff Brian although I'm not sure they would be perfect for my specific needs.

As it stands I am trying to decide between 1 Kata bag and 2 Cinebags ones and a Petrol. Will make a purchase next week. So it's out of...

Pros: Enough room for fully assembled kit and accessories. Good price. Well made. Wheels and handle
Cons: Maybe too big for comfortable shoulder carrying? Too big to be carry-on

or

Pros: Near enough same internal dimensions as above. Good price. Well made. More compact. Will work as carry-on.
Cons: No wheels/handle. Will get uncomfortable. Not as rugged as above, although still well made.

or

Pros: It's a big old bulky box with enough room to get fully assembled kit plus extras in there.
Cons: No wheels/handle (optional extra). Will get uncomfortable very quickly as it really is just a big old box. No real external storage to speak of.

Pros: Looks nice. Enough room for fully assembled kit and accessories. Good price. Well made. Doesn't immediately scream 'expensive camera' .
Cons: Maybe too big for comfortable shoulder carrying? No wheels/Handle (optional extra). Too big for carry-on.

I guess it depends on your setup and what lenses you're using. I'm using an Obox and Zeiss ZF lenses and with a battery on the back typically under 17" long.

Update... I've bought a 'nearly new' Cinebags CB-30 from ebay which I'm now waiting on from the US.
Seem big and deep with lots of storage plus unlike the cd40 on wheels it can be used as carry if needs be. Will report back if/when it arrives.

hahahahaha way to ressurect the thread.

I used the Cinebags CB-30 for quite a while and I managed to get a lot of gear in it. The only downside was that it became quite heavy and carrying it for more than 20mins at a time was back breaking. In hindsight I should have bought the version that had wheels.
