Here's the short interview I had with Ted at the Sundance Film Festival.
The working Scarlet 8X fixed camera was also present.

http://www.cameravideo.net/forum/news-de-video/16518-red-scarlet-fixe-8x-a-sundance.html

It's posted on the French website www.cameravideo.net - thus the horrible French for the intro/outro. I'm working on sub-titles.

Thanks again to Ted for letting me bother him whilst invited to dinner.

I'm having a hard time getting it to embed in that thread, but the link to it works...

Ted must be the pappiest man in the world, playing around with that Scarlet :-)
Can´t wait to get one.

One of the highlights is TED clearly said and pointed out that Scarlet can be compared

with a professional cine digital cameras that have price tag starting from US$ 80.000 and above...

I cringe everytime I see that... but then remember, these are engineering builds. Everything should look nice an dandy for the final product
That's what I was hoping. RED is obviously phenomenal in the aesthetics department, so I expect the final build to be nice and shiny :)

Thanks for the footage Chris, and thanks for the interview, Ted!

Notes:

REDmote wireless connection to the connection is very quick - looks like it took about one second.

ISO 12800 seems to be available at the high end.

Touchscreen interface seems extremely intuitive - touch the item you wish to adjust (i.e., "1/48" or "ISO 5000") and then simply slide the popup bar to the left or to the right to pick the proper setting.

Having up to 2:1 compression on Scarlet is still "the plan".

Don't compare a Scarlet to a DSLR. Compare it to a high-end HD Digital Cinema production camera.

REDCODE has been tweaked? Ted referred to RED ONE as having "first generation" wheras Scarlet/Epic will have the "next generation".

There are probably "tweaks" remaining on the final finished form of Scarlet.

Of course, this is an early build - everything can change...

Cannot get enough of seeing that cam and LCD.

It was very dark where we filmed, and yet the image on the LCD was so crisp and clear... and bright!

It was very heavy too. Sturdy, not so much heavy I guess. Seemed like better quality - thicker metal - than the R1, and that says a lot!

1st, I think he only compares scarlet with dslrs because thats what the current batch of people red is aiming for, with scarlet, are shooting on DSLRs

2nd, Ted means the first gen sensors... RED One M sensors, now RED one has upgraded to 2nd gen, as what the Epic/Scarlets will have.

I think this is relevant.

This movie, Like Crazy, was shot on a Canon 7d. After receiving a very warm welcome at Sundance, Paramount purchased the movie for $4 million USD.

DSLR's can shoot feature films, and those films can be purchased by major studios. I think it's common knowledge by now that many of the scenes in Black Swan, where Natalie Portman won a Golden Globe, were shot on a Canon 7d or 5d.

If film makers can get a similar small foot print, often the stated reason for using a DSLR, and low light capabilities to avoid large lighting set ups, PLUS 3k, they'll go for that.

Price wise, not that much difference. The 7d used for "Like Crazy" was hot rodded, i.e. modified for a PL mount. That right there costs about $3,500 bucks, just for the mod. Ad the price of the camera body, and you're in spitting distance of a scarlet 2/3 price wise. And remember, that's a 7d with no lenses, body only.

PS Watched the video. Ted is such a pimp. I mean that in a good way.

Wow, I really, really like the looks of the Scarlet. Looks like it will operate more
like a 'real' video camera than all those DSLR's and knock offs, but add some
of the nice things from still photography (HDR mode) plus some
other 'goodies' like 120fps. I would put down money now if they took deposits.....

Most informative video interview yet. Ted's getting his schtick down.:sifone:

It is going to interesting to see how the compression rate/frame rate/bit depth/HDRx™ modes all shake out in the final product and what the limits will be. 2:1 lossless compression? Whoa! I hope that stays in the mix. Hope it has 16 bit capture option like Epic too.

Well, in part. The point he was also making (which seems to have been missed) is that the Scarlet also competes against practically every 2/3" HD Cinema Camera (and 1/3 camcorders, 1/2 camcorders, etc.) and - at least on paper - does as well or better. I've got a feeling that real world use will probably bear that out.

2nd, Ted means the first gen sensors... RED One M sensors, now RED one has upgraded to 2nd gen, as what the Epic/Scarlets will have.

Very possible - he did say it specifically in regard to REDCODE, though, and after discussing compression ratios.

:cheers2:

Just pointing this out, ted said that he expects to see most movies at sundance next year filmed on scarlet. and since movies take time to make, then hopefully well see a scarlet in the next 3 or 4 months!!!

Hmm

Hmm

That statement is not that true. Only the scenes of the subway where shot on Canon 7D. Not "many scenes".

I do think one can make a whole feature movie with a 5d. As well with a EX1, Z1, and any camera for that matter.

But still, not the Black Swan case.
