  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet #643 'Kong' in Los Angeles

Shot @ 4KHD with a Sigma 70-200 from up in the booth at the UCB Theater in Los Angeles. I was able to shoot the entire show at 8:1 RC on a single 64GB mag. I wish I would have remembered my A-Box to get a feed from the board, but was able to hide my H4n off to the side of the stage.

The fan was a bit noisy in standby, but I found if you turn it down to 40% it wouldn't be too loud when you have to be stealthy in a theater. As a photographer, it's great to point and shoot and not feel self-conscious about shutter clicks during a show.

Getting familiar with RCX, I can see how powerful a RED is for photography. The only thing I wish would be to have the ability to drag a still select into the viewer and have the grade transferred directly onto a clip (much like Resolve). It may be possible another way, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I'll post a video soon, but I'm pretty blown away with how well MX performed in low light. I shot 2.8 @ 800 and was able to get proper exposure.

Use the "look memories" feature to quickly apply looks onto other clips.

Shot today with fellow Reduser Ben Pluimer. He brought along his Zeiss Duclos set and slider dolly. The EasyRig/Slider combo really worked well. We shot in the back of Meltdown in LA with some fine folks from UCBLA.

Did a quick 'Fight Club' grade in RCX and am really liking the film grain and alchemy. The one thing I noticed was a slight color shift on TIFF exports as compared to DPXs which were dead on to the graded image within Redcine.

Camera held up really well, but I'm afraid at some point will have to be sent back in to fix the v-mount/red volt hot swap issue, as an install of 3.0 didn't help. After seeing the images that come out of it though, makes it hard to send back!

Love those KONG promo photos! Did you shoot with an anamorphic lens on your 7D, or are those flares done in post?

Also, may I ask about your mounting solution for the G3 Wireless Receiver on the WC Top Handle?

Thanks David- those flares were added in post using the Knoll Light Factory plug-in for Photoshop.

For the receiver, we have a top cheese handle w/ the wooden camera hot shoe mount screwed in, then TRS -> XLR -> A-Box. Works great!

Thinking about the setup, I would love the ability to throw on a Noga arm onto 15mm rails and have a small two inch 1/4 20 screw on NATO cap for the arm. Set up this way I can get the LCD further forward when flying the Scarlet around w/ EasyRig or when shoulder mounted.

As of now, we have to remove the NATO clamp from the LCD to make this happen. If anyone knows of this piece, I'd be grateful.
