  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

Ted also said the lens was f/4, which, from every indication everywhere else, is just a mistake. (It's more like f/2.4). I am sure he is not trying to suggest any changes from what has been put out there. I am not saying there COULDN'T be any, but I don't think we should hang on what Ted said as an indicator of such.

And, remember, Ted has been flying all over the globe talking mostly about Epic for the last few months. I think he is entitled to be a little unclear on some of the yet-to-be-determined Scarlet details.

Hi guys,

I just chatted with Ted who has been super busy at CES. =)

As mentioned previously, the 6k price Ted estimated in the video interview is not set in stone and was just an estimate for a working package.

Plus, Jarred responded already about pricing: "Package price is still being worked on.. as you all know a lot has changed since that original number. Should be in the same ballpark though. "

Also, perhaps the audio was not clear enough, but in regards to the lens speed..it's definitely faster than 4.0. In the ces interviews, you can see the scarlet set to 2.5.

Jarred also stated in this thread it is "f2.4 / T2.6 ( thats what the constant means ) :) "

I work with sound on XLR adapters. Will I be able to slap, say, a Beachtech (or whatever) XLR adapter onto the bottom of the RED Scarlet and plug into of the 8 pin adapters in the front of the camera? This feasible?

Been trying to keep track of the newly priced Scarlet (now with a 5" LCD monitor, plus a nice sized SSD drive and batteries, etc)...

By Ted's hand jesters, it almost looked like he was indicating that what he was holding would be 6k with screen, side handle, battery... and maybe redmote?

I'm seriously drooling!!!! Can't wait for these.

You won't need the Beachtek, it is made for unbalanced 1/8" stereo inputs. The 1/8" jacks on Scarlet are wired balanced mono with phantom power for mics. There are two of them. All you will need is an XLR to mini TRS adapter cable wired for balanced mics.

NOT :out:

EDIT: To be fair, I don't see where that article says anything of the sort.

About halfway through the article, last sentence:

Most of the cost-cutting will come through the amount of bandwidth available to the camera, which should be about half that of the larger and more expensive EPIC-M and EPIC-X models. The cut in bandwidth will lower the price but also drop the maximum available frame rate. RED has dropped the fixed-lens version of the camera that it had previously announced.

That's just someone reading too much into the "Scarlet S35 is now Epic-S" announcement. It wouldn't make sense for this thread to even exist if that sentence was even remotely correct.

Pure FUD. Both versions of the 2/3" model are alive and well.

Read the Scarlet FAQ sticky by John Sagud at the top of the Scarlet section here. Other than the price going up a bit most of what is there is still valid. The specs have only gotten better.

Oops - you're right... missed that. :embarassed:

Still not true, though.

Somebody please clear this up for me...just read an article about Scarlet that claims RED will be dropping the fixed lens version. If that's the case, why is Ted running all over CES showing it off?

Don't believe everything you read.

(It's a common maxim for a reason)

When I was in grade school one of my buddies came charging into the science lab exclaiming, "I just found out that Joyce Dewitt is really a man."

The rest of us, in almost perfect unison blurted out "That is not true!"

He replied, "I know it's true. I read it in Swank Magazine"

:crying:

Unfortunately, like many such camera-related articles, the authors rarely have a clue about WTF is going on. In our internet age, irresponsible journalism runs rampant. Never mind plagiarism, poor grammar or even the occasional honest mistake. No one these days takes an extra 10 seconds to check facts, verify sources, or even to cite a source for claims that are obviously 5th-generation hearsay. It's all about shoveling out content to generate more page hits and more ad impressions. Cha-ching!

This Michael Grotticelli [author] needs a firm smack to the back of his head. And his editor, assuming he even has one, needs a swift kick to the genitals. The article reads as if the guy doesn't even understand that there's 2/3" Scarlet models and what was an S35 Scarlet is now what is EPIC-S.

Sorry if my response is overblown. I've spent too much time today reading random BS and incorrect reports from CES and little half-assed articles such as this one. I'd like to think I should be getting used to this sort of thing by now, but I swear it gets worse every year, with every new Macworld, CES, NAB and Siggraph... Or maybe I just care more now than I used to. I don't know.

I understand you can add an audio modular unit in the back but what are the advantages of having the mini inputs in the front? If you are going to go small and just use brain, screen and mic, then the audio wire would essentially be coming around from the front of the camera? If you have a shotgun, it is going to run a long way for a small handheld setup. Is there an input in the back? Ted didn't mention one.
