As long as they are in decent shape, most of the lenses I have should perform pretty well. Here is a sample from a rare 8-24mm f1.6 Taylor
Hobson zoom. It was shot by the guy I bought it from on a Lumix G1.
2:1 crop, so very close to Scarlet's HD width and resolution.

This lens needs some mechanical work, but the glass is pristine.

See, there you go. That's got a beautiful transition past the plane of focus. I haven't ever heard of that particular lens before, but there are miracles of optical engineering out there waiting to be used again. And most of the ones that were high-quality lenses during the span of my lifetime are probably still capable of doing excellent work again. Lord knows there are a ton of 16mm lenses out there waiting to be had at a reasonable price.

You mentioned Bolex earlier. I've been wondering whether those old Switars will adapt well to the Scarlet 2/3" Cinema body. Some of them were excellent.

The non-RX Switars should be excellent. The RX versions will show some CA due to being designed for the Bolex reflex prism.

I am pounding my head against the cement wall in my office. I do this when anyone mentions changing the Scarlet. At this point I'd take a Scarlet with a Trappist Monk inside that illuminates each frame like a manuscript. 1 fpd? A frame per day? I'm all over that sh*t...

Ah yes! Scarlet T. There is bound to be a short supply of hemp parchment media when it is released though.:biggrin5:

I rather have a 3k Scarlet in my hands than ten 4k Scarlets without a release date.

Yeah, lets quit this discussion.

If we keep adding features, it wont be a Scarlet... It will be an Epic!

So here's some comparisons that make sense to me (YMMV). I shot a ton of 8mm film as a kid. Less so with Super-8, but I shot quite a bit of that, including several student film projects. It's a nice format, but it's very hard to critically focus mainly because the (optical) viewfinder image is so small. So those are here:

8mm film: 7.9mm x 4.5mm
Super-8mm film: 7.9mm x 5.79mm

So, close to 8mm. Pity 4/3rds was not going to fit the fixed, but as more knowledgeable people have pointed out before, straight 2/3rds and 16mm to 4/3rds adapters can support good resolutions. But I think the ayes, are more knowledgeable about reading the future.

That funny Joel, have you got an 3K, or a newer current release date for it?

I didn't read any response to this, I am curious to see what you guys think about my previous comment.

I also want a scarlet that will do 16 stops like they claim for two of my $100 cameras.

It is basically too late for this debate, it is coming, get ready.

Got the latest specs for the Ambarella Ione smart camera chipset with android/linux support, latest GPU with processing, and 30fps 5mp camera support (though it now says 60fps in the document). Have to get one of those this half of the year for $500+. I'll accept less than 2/3rds at that price as a personal second camera. By end of the year they should have 4k resolution support chipset. Good for a carry around second personal camera.

What I would want more then 4k Scarlet, is a full 13 and a half stops if the scarlet cant do that(not really sure, actual specs are not yet posted to my knowledge). Stops all the way!!! :D

I definitely would like to see around 13 stops DR native without HDR. Scarlet should get there.
To me the whole point of Scarlet is Epic like features and performance in a 16mm film sized format vs a 35mm sized format.
At full 3072 pixel width (10.1mm), Scarlet is a close match for the 16mm TV projection aperture.

I like your optimism! Hopefully some more Scarlet specs will be posted at NEB in April. :D

From Jim, Jan 22nd recap:

"EPIC-Xs ship in reasonable quantities before NAB 2011.
Scarlet 8X and interchangeable soon after."

If they're to be shipping 'soon after' NAB, I'd expect the spec to be final before NAB, and RED to be taking orders at NAB :-)

Well the original DR target for the entire MX series was 11-1/2+ stops. So far they have exceeded that with both R1 MX and Epic by about two stops.
There are already high end 2/3" cameras on the market that can hit 13 stops DR, so I don't think the sensor size will be a limiting factor there. Might be slightly less sensitive in low light conditions, but that is a separate issue.
Other than resolution and sensor size, the already announced features are pretty Epic like: 120 fps continuous at 3k, and HDRx are major ones.

Yep.

Personally id like to see a scarlet with a full sensor or maybe even scarlets go on sale right after NAB. either or id be happy :)

Which cameras do you mean?
