Damn. Go Ruairi!!!

Wow! Congratulations. I show The Silent City to people all the time to show what a low budget short can be. So is this the project that all the talk of miniatures is for?

I don't know man, I think Ridley Scott would be the best director for this. He's got the chops to pull it off.

Ruairi deserves it, no doubt. I love it when hard work and talent pay off. Congrats man!!

i dont know. the idea of a live action Akira is very seductive, but i always eventually snap out of it.

but if they're going to do it, this might be the guy. I just hope they're able to expand on the screenplay of the original while keeping with the themes and unanswered questions.

The movie needs an "art house" guy who can handle special effects.

I wish I could see Billy Walsh's version ;)

Alright Ruairi! Feels like "one-of-our-own" even though I've never met him.

I kinda hope it's for real. I always like Akira, but I think some of the story elements will need some serious updating or alteration for today's market. I'm curious to see how it works out (if it does).

But for bringing a Japanese Anime feature into the live-action realm, Akira is a good choice, IMO. If I ever get the opportunity to do such a thing (just fantasizing here), I'd want to do Nausicaa: The Wind Rider, but that's just me. :)

Both films (Akira and The Silent City) are very cool. The animation in Akira is amazing... very beautiful, great compositions, and so detailed. Please don't let this project die in development hell...

Congratulations to Ruairi on this even being a rumor!! Wow. Ruairi is a genius and a virtuoso, IMO.

Having said that, I don't like the idea of an Akira live action picture. I love anime, but Akira is my least favorite major anime feature. I just didn't care for it at all. I absolutely worship Ghost in the Shell and Miyazaki.

It would probably be better to just grab a manga or graphic novel that has never been done on the screen before. Either that, or do a trilogy of the Berserk anime series!

Akira was the first anime I saw on a big screen (circa '91), so I have an affection for it. Definitely ahead of its time when it debuted in '88. I've never been a fan of adapting or remaking classics, but congrats to Ruairi if this is true. Kaneda! Tetsuo! Pure energy!

I'm sure Ruairi Robinson will do a great job in whatever project he decides to do next! He is truely one of those directors that just gets what people want to see on screen, and has a great sense for pace and timing.
Congratulations to Ruairi,

I prefer Akira for it's huge scale, epic and personal themes, and ambiguous nature. I like trying to fill in the gaps. Ghost in the Shell is the opposite. To literal, clinical, cold for me.

I agree completely though, there's a ton of manga out there that hasn't been made yet. Adapt that and leave the classics alone.

wow, well if you prefer akira to GiTS and Miyazki, my condolences. :)

but yeah, if Ruairi seriously gets this offer, I want to say my two cents: that picking up a good manga or US graphic novel would be a better source for a feature than Akira. There are better stories and visuals than Akira.

what is Miyazki? My searched turned up nothing. (and I've probably only seen 10 anime films in my life)

Sorry, that's Miyazaki.

He's probably best known for his films "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away." The latter won him an Oscar for best animated film and is the highest-grossing picture in Japan's history, beating even "Titanic."

I enjoyed Sprited Away, as well as Howl's Moving Castle. I wouldn't want those to be live action either-- just because a film CAN be made these days (due to VFX advances) doesn't mean it should be. Akira might be cool though, just to see what they do with the bikes.

Yeah, 'cause A Good Year was great - but not as good as White Squall

Why is it that people think there are only 5 people in the world who can direct big movies - Ruairi is a very talented director and will do an amazing job. No matter what good fortune comes someone's way there is always some plum waiting in the wings to say something usless or lob in "their 2 cents". There are other directors besides Scott, Cameron, Spielberg et al. Scott is great but make way for new people.
