  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RTmotion mk3 wireless follow focus

really dispointed by the customer service... they take generally 2 weeks to answer your mail, and it have been months that is it noticed on the support page "Currently the MK3 firmwares are offline. There will be a new version after testing, approx 1 week."

I upgraded to the mk3.1 kit and they fixed the few issues that the mk2.5 had.

Also they will release soon (soon might be quite a while at RTmotion) a kit to integrate Foolcontrol.

I strongly recommend you the RTmotion mk3.1!

I have been using a 3.1 for two months now and would say that the build quality is great, resistance on the focus wheel is great, motors have turned a variety of barrels without issue. I love the remapping feature which is really great for photo lenses where you have very little barrel rotation - for example a canon 16-35. I can map from 3ft to infinity very quickly- resulting in 1000 waypoints from 3ft to infinity to allow for much greater control in pulling focus. I have not experienced any issues with customer service, they have responded to all my queries within 24 hours give or take. They are currently beta testing a wireless range extender/ wireless thumbwheel.

Used one for the first time. Much better than a bartech in every way. I Just wish the knob was a lot better.

I don't get this new trend dampening follow focuses. Ever used an FF4 with a masterprime or a panavision knob on a primo? Totally lose. I dampen with my hand, and snap when I need to. Nothing is worse is buzzing on a sudden move because the knob doesn't turn fast enough. It also needs to be 100% consistant. I found my handset got heavier towards infinity.

Also more torque please!!! That fact a DM1x can rip a lens of the mount and toss it 15 feet is a good thing!! I like to hear that endstop slam too because im certain the lens is calibrated the full range.

Still with RT motion theres no reason to ever use a bartech again.

best motors are still the old arri clm-3. Those motors have so much torque you could use them as an angle grinder.

Any updates from anyone here on the RT Motion 3.1? I only need one channel... how does it compare to the CMotion Compact one.... we are using the RedRock FF at the moment and it is not very good..... compiled a list and at the moment ... no 1 is the CMotion Compact 1 (2) The RT Motion and (3)The Axis 1..... budget is around £5k .... any advice is appreciated... particularly from first hand experience... do not want to buy another unit again.... I feel the RedRock was a bit of a waste of money.

I used to have the redrock, not pro enough. I've had the rt motion for a while now, love it. C motion I haven't used but I'm sure is awesome as well.

Nosa, for me the 3.1 has been rock solid...I shot 2 features and many other projects with it in the last months...

Thanks for the advice.... really like the RT Motion over all the rest as the system is expandable... it was the fact that a few people said it was unreliable that made it number 2..... Yes Jake I agree the Redrock is just not sensitive enough for small movements

One advantage of RT Motion controller (and Arri WCU-4 controller) over Cmotion is that it allows to mount a monitor conveniently onto the unit. I use RT Motion controller instead one of the handles of my WC Director's monitor cage and it fits like a glove. With Cmotion - good luck mounting anything on that big ass hand unit, good for pulling near a dedicated monitor, but not at all suitable for a compact on the go config with a small separate monitor.

I don't think the rt motion is unreliable at all. I've owned it for over a year now...

Cvolutions have a rosette monitor mount for the side. But yes the handset is stupid large

Having an issue with the knockoff LEMO Right angle 0B connectors for the motor cable. The thread is incredibly short on these knockoffs, have all been lost (I should have used locktite) and replacement back caps are a different thread to genuine Lemo, so I can't replace the back caps with genuine Lemo. RT Motion haven't returned my email about getting replacement back caps. No surprise there.
The only solution that I can see is replacing the right angle connector with genuine Lemo, at a cost of about $100. Does anyone know who makes these knockoffs, and can I get replacement back caps anywhere in the states?

cheers.

Hi Mark, when did you contact us? We have a dedicated support team now so I'm surprised to hear of this slipping through the cracks. We've had 1 or 2 people lose caps before and sent them free replacements. Actually we have them threadlocked solid now, so it shouldn't happen anymore.

Kris

(p.s., we use a mix of genuine and non-genuine Lemo parts depending on price, quality and availability- the right-angle is an example of a high quality substitute. We test literally every single cable and honour a fair warranty of them, of course!)

It's really very reliable I'm glad to say! Anything complicated and with a big enough user-base is going to have individual issues, but they're rare. The only significant blip was a number of RECEIVER's blown up due to reverse-polarity-whilst-wired-to-a-camera. I.e. a DTAP put in backwards whilst the RECEIVER was grounded via a run-stop cable. (We charge £150 for a new Receiver pcb/wireless swap out by the way, which we're obviously not making money on). Aside from that there's been very very few issues with the MK3.1. The latest Receiver PCB revision has even more protection and is immune to the "reverse-polarity into the power socket whilst wired to a camera on the CAM port" issue.. So we're very confident!
