  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RTmotion mk3 wireless follow focus

Older versions were calibrated to feather into their marks... in reality it just felt like lag. MK3 with current firmware is tight. We love 'em.

I will also add that the MK3 firmware also has this feathered response as an option if you need it. It works pretty nice if you assign the slider to a zoom lens. Nice way to ease in and out.

Love love love my 3.1 - used it on our feature film for 15 days and it was great! Best piece of gear I have ever purchased next to a RED and my Cooke 18-100 ;)

it is rock solid and gets the job done extremely well!

I just hope the firmware gets updated soon so the readout on the controller can be calibrated and mapped to lenses for distances in feet & meters for the rest of the world ;). That is the ONLY thing holding this baby back from stomping on everyone in my opinion!

Thanks guys! Your answers really help clear up my worries.

BTW, are you able to do smooth slow zooming without the 700GBP upgrade to the joystick?

MK3 is much superior. In my opinion, it is better than Redrock in every single way except price.

The real comparison is between Preston FIZ and MK3. Both are snappy, solid, with outstanding range. The mapping on Preston is right now. Its a firmware update away on MK3. Size and ergonomics are way better on MK3. The MDR for the MK3 is unbelievably awesome. Preston currently has a separate Iris handset (DPs love it). MK3 will have it. MK3 is much cheaper than Preston. Preston has extremely strong legacy behind it and solid market penetration. MK3 is constantly back-ordered with much smaller reputation.

Can anyone comments on the merits of RTMotion MK3 vs Heden Carat?
I am struggling to make a decision. Heden's motor seems to be superior (how so?)

But I am also interested in future upgrade to a 2-channel zoom-capable setup.

I find it kind of funny that people expect the firmware update soon for the digital readout. They have been saying that is coming for 2 years now... I don't get what is taking them so long...Anyone have any insight to the reasoning behind the lengthy delay? The readout is pretty much useless as is.

Ha ha. Maybe the same reason we don't have a flip mode on the touch!

haha very true!

I just hate when they say coming soon, then 2 years pass and they still claim the same thing. How is that coming soon and how can I believe you?

P.S. We all need flip mode on our lcd's!

I don't post on here often anymore (I am mostly on the steadicam forum now), but I saw this thread and thought I would weigh in:

I had the MK3 and then upgraded to the MK3.1

I had some issues with the antenna on the MK3 breaking off of the receiver. Like three times. Not good things. BUT the company (Kris especially) was fantastic at sorting out my issues and getting them dealt with in a timely manner (and across the atlantic to boot).

I upgraded to the MK3.1 in September of last year and since then it has been absolutely rock solid. I am a steadicam operator, so I work with a bunch of different cameras/lenses/ACs/etc. The motors have turned all but the tightest lenses (I think I had a little bit of an issue on some old stiff 16mm lenses that felt like they hadn't been serviced in decades, I could barely turn them by hand) and are nice and small. The receiver is also tiny and easy to throw on the camera or the rig.

ACs have had fairly positive reviews about it. Most of them say they like it far better than the Bartech, but not up to the Preston (even the FIZ1/2, some ACs say).

But, for the work I do now, and the price point, it is fantastic. Will I upgrade to a preston? Yes, I will to have gear than I know ACs will know and use willingly. Do I need to do so now? No. And it will probably be while before I have to. I think I can take the RTMotion on most jobs and feel 100% confident with it.

Just give me the digital readout and it will be on par with a Preston in my book!

Got to be honest, my experience has not been great. My motors went back early on because they had clunks. Every job it has been used on there has been complaints of the signal repeatedly dropping. So far i've kept quiet about it online. I haven't used it on a single job where there hasn't been complaints. I fed this back to Kris at RT Motion and the unit went back, so far nothing has changed. I sent mine back ( again) a few weeks ago in the hope that it could be resolved and maybe even pay to upgrade to the 3.1 ( mine is a 3.0 ) but heard noting back, customer service is pretty/very poor at this point. I really don't like doing this, but i suppose for those who are considering a purchase, it's only fair to share my experience.

I think this is a great product but I think that if the backorder (so money going their way!) is so long, then they should hire a couple of heads more, to deal with pre-sales and support!!!!!!

This is probably obvious, but I read the signal can overpower the reciever causing disturbance if the remote is near camera, there is a setting that cuts the powers down when used in closer proximity to camera

Does anyone know if the RT motion has support for a separate iris control ala single channel preston? Even if it was a second RT motion controller?
Thanks.

I would guess you can do this by using a second consoler on separate wireless channel to se second receiver. I don't know if two controllers can access one receiver though.

Does anyone know if the hand wheel has 1/4-20 holes on it and where?
