Can anybody help with accessories? Whats needed, mounting plate & quick release pack?

Hi everyone,

What are the accessories absolutely needed for mounting the camera that are only available from RED?
As I figured, I need the mounting plate ($100) aaannnd?

what do I need if I want to use 19mm setups? I have Arri's BP4 & BP6, so, how does Epic get on these? some sort of risers? mounting plates?

whats the quick release stuff for?

Thanks a lot

Hi Ivan,

I have ordered from the RED Store: 1 DSMC Quick Release Platform Pack (for 19mm rods) + 1 Epic Mounting Plate + 1 extra Dovetail Mounting Plate (Long).

So I can mount 1 Dovetail on a Tripod (with non Arri head) and the other on a Steadycam, then simply slide my Epic + Rods System with the DSMC Quick Release Platform on the desired Dovetail. (if you use an Arri head you don't need the RED dovetail because the DMSC Quick Release Platform fits directly on the standart Arri head dovetail)
So it's very easely to switch between Steadycam and Tripod.
+ If I need to shoot Handheld lightweight I can release only my Epic without the Rod System (and only powered with the Sidehandle) over the upper release where the Epic attaches with the Epic Mounting Plate.

For me this is a very fast and versatile system. But I have'nt tried it out yet, because I expect to receive my Epic + System tomorrow.

Now there are 3 new demo videos at RED Store to explain the quick release system (under right corner), I recomend the third one, it explains everything very well :)

I'm in the same boat here. I'm thinking to buy the same, but the only thing that makes me hesitant is that the dovetail doesn't have any safety pin in case it is lose so it doesn't slide of. I have been using an Allstar red dove tail (it has a safety pin) but unfortunately doesn't work on the new Red DMSC quick realease system.

I don't know what to do, because I think the safety pin is very important.

As you can see below, our Universal Arri Adapter Plate has a pin so it is impossible for the camera set up to slide off. Hope this helps!

We need more third parties to release accessories compatible wit the Quick release DSMC system. it would be nice to have another source other than RED (due to the constant back order problem...which may only get worse after November) 3rd...)

Good point, I have not considered that... For now I'll place a screw in the front part of the long Dovetail enough high to stop the Camera from falling off.
But, if I got this right, the Arri Dovtail will perfectly fit in the DSMC Quick Release Platform, so you can maybe buy a Arri Dovetail from a third party, and then buy the other pieces separately from RED to complete the quick release pack.
It's exactly the same price if you buy all pieces separately from RED or the hole DSMC Quick Release Platform Pack. (So you can rest $150 from the Arri Dovetail price, just an idea)

As soon as I get the Camera, I'll try the screw thing and post if it works or not.

Just got my beauty, 3H ago.
And the security screw thing worked!! it's very easy, only screw in a RED bolt screw at the front part of the RED Dovetail and that's it, the quick release platform can't slide of with your camera at the front end anymore, but it will at the back end so be careful. But at the back it slide to you not from you like at the front, so it's easyer to catch the camera.

Thanks for the tip of the screw. that definititively helps, but still not a perfect solution.

I'm getting confused about the ARRi Dovtail. Can I fit the arri dovetail with no arri tripods? I have a cartoni delta, and it has a small square plate that connects to the tripod.

All this accesories hunting is making me anxious, but not as much as waiting for stage 3 to start shipping! :-)

Hey Chester,

Do you then mount the dovetail onto yet another plate on your head? I have the OConnor, which already has a long plate. Seems like a lot of wasted metal. Won't know for sure until it turns up Monday!

Yes you can, I have a Panther X15 head with also a small square plate, that I connect with 1 standard thick screw + 1 standard thin screw to the Dovetail, in my case it's the Red Dovetail, but as far as I know, with the standard screw(s) from your head plate you can connect it to any Arri compatible Dovetail, and this finally to the Red quick release platform.

Hey Jimhare,
Yes I mount the dovetail on another plate that connects to the head. (just as posted above)
for the O'Connor heads with long plates, I think you have no other choice then waste some extra metal + $ and get the dovetail, if you want the flexibility of the quick release system, but maybe you don't need this flexebility, then you have other choices.

In reality the dovetail is not so much bigger than the quick release platform + the 2 DSMC universal rod mounts.
