  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

Jarred can you comment about the markings on the lens in that AAton picture? They seem a little sparse. 10' 20' 50' I hope that is a prototype.

Can't put anything past you guys.... heh heh heh good eye.

Thats was an engineering lens.. Focus is at the front apex and we only marked them for specific control points.

the current lenses ( see below) have lots of numbers :)

Would the marks where the aperture numbers are be a tad easier to differentiate if they were slightly longer?
I'd like to second this if it isn't too late to alter them slightly. It's a heat of the moment thing that will most likely get screwed up whilst on set and under the gun for time.

Cheers for listening as always Red!

Data pins on future RPP's ...

Data pins on future RPP's ...

Just wanted to share this thought with the community that I sent in to RED just after NAB. Of course, too late for this run - but future builds???
(I would be curious to know what others think...)

About there being no data pins on the RPP's - First - I fully understand that adding i Data or LDS info is a complex undertaking - there are more intensive design and manufacturing considerations that would drive cost outside the goal of the RPP's.

However - consider adding data pins to the lens to capture two essential pieces of information:
Lens focal length and serial number.

Only static information - not interactive data (such as focus pulls).

Why?
1. You can begin to flag lenses based on their characteristics: If it turns out that a particular lens has a slightly different "look", you can make adjustments in post. Being able to ID every shot that used the "xx mm" prime during a shoot would be an invaluable tool. Especially if you were changing lenses often. Then apply a universal LUT to every shot with that lens...

2. For those of us that will end up with multiple sets of primes for 3-D acquisition, it is an ideal way to verify that the same lens ended up on the correct "eye". Both lenses may look perfect individually, they may both look great aligned for 3-D, but why did that one day of shots look different? Could it be that the left & right lenses were switched? Something you might never notice until the shots were next to each other in post.

3. Great way to track / identify a stolen piece of glass!

4. This is very good information to store with the original footage for archival / reference info.

The list could go on - but I think these are reasons enough.

{Edit to original post - when EPIC comes on board, different module serial numbers could also be captured at the start of each take}

After I picked up one of the RPP's at NAB (Yes - I've ordered a set), I kept thinking about the absence of the data pins. On Thursday, I spoke with a select number of manufacturers and people I know abut the concept of adding data pins to lens products just to capture these two pieces of info - I got a lot of positive feedback - (and some real double-takes on why this hasn't been done)
Please consider this modification. I know that it would add a cost, but I think that there is enough of a benefit to make it a worthwhile feature on a pro lens.

The numbers don't look any different than the numbers on a 12:1 to me... a little vague but completely functional.

One curiosity: the witness mark on the focus barrel appears to be about half the thickness of the fixed witness mark. Are they the same thickness? If they're different thicknesses, there will be an inherent inaccuracy to the marks.

This is true and it is true.

Yes, but I still think it's within the general margin of error of any focus pull.

Always listening... :)

these are going to be flippen awesome lenses! the only thing that could make them better is if they came with a free pair of Oakley sun glasses! haha

Enough clearance for adding second distance scale?

Enough clearance for adding second distance scale?

I've ordered a set of the RPPs in metric (my preference), but I'm wondering if there is enough space, the way the lenses seem to be designed, to add a tape marker (using very thin tape, letraset, etc) for feet along the metric scale. By space I mean clearance for sliding underneath the part that is not cut out to show the distance scale.

Thanks

there is clearance to slip tape under the overlay, but its a bit tricky getting it in there.

I forgot to ask whilst at NAB...why weren't they designed for both metric and imperial like a lot of lenses? I guess I can't imagine myself using metric, but it would sure increase their usability/rentability across borders.
