  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

As I understand it, the wider the aspect, the larger the image circle needed, unless you are using anamorphic lenses. So 2.4:1 will be harder to cover than 16x9.
You are correct. This post / graphic helps clarify it visually.

Yes, quite the opposite on the widest 2:1 format vs. a 16x9 size such as the RED ONE's sensor size or the 3:2 36x24mm FF35mm, actually.

E. :-)

Thanks for the link, that answers many questions I was about to ask! Can anyone confirm how accurate his estimates are on active area dimensions and such?

You know what's odd? My math told me that an S35 film frame (24.9x18.7) would have a diagonal of 31mm+, and this chart seems to bear that out. Yet the Master Prime specs say that the image circle radius needed to cover 24.9x18.7mm S35 is 12.45mm (24.9mm diameter). I wonder what that's all about.

Unless you can find my quote... your memory has failed you. I can't remember posting exactly what Monstro coverage would be with RPPs. Although that is something that can easily be done now with math and the specs given.

Jim

I'd love to see this. I wonder if Evin can make a grahpic to see coverage on the monstro sensor.

OK, showing my ignorance here, but I'm assuming the metric set is the one to get for a UK market? I've only had occasion to use hired in cine lenses once in Spain and they had both metric and imperial markings! Can any UK cine pros fill me in? Thanks!

So what lenses can the 2/3" Scarlet version use? Can they use the RPP? or is it limited to the mini-red lenses, besides the various Nikon/Canon mount lenses?

Will the same zoom lens that is on the fixed Scarlet, be available as a lens for the 2/3" Scarlet?

Wow, thanks for the link. That is exactly what I needed. Thanks to Evin for running all those numbers and making the chart! I hope it is all accurate. :crossfingers:

It makes me think that what I would love the most to be able to do is to record the full 16:9, but be able to work with an overlay on the monitors showing the 2.4:1 with the rest grayed out as lookaround.

The search function is your friend. Both these questions have been answered numerous times elsewhere, but...

The upshot is that the 2/3 Scarlet can use any lens that works on any mount available on other Scarlets. So PL, mini-RED, Nikon, C-mount, etc...

And, at least at this moment, there's no word on the fixed zoom being available separately, and the fixed zoom cannot be removed.

Sorry if this was stated elsewhere, but Jim stated he will honour buyers who allready bought the 300mm Pro Prime Lens couple weeks ago if i can remember right.

Was there a statment allready how this will work ?
I´m crossing my fingers that we can get the Prime set a couple of dollars cheaper :)

thanks for these new beautiful toys :)))

What is the maginification factor for a RPP lens on the 2/3" Scarlet?

Having the Zoom lens on the fixed Scarlet be available separately would really be ideal (for me at least), in bridging the gap to make the 2/3" Cinema, S-35, and FF Scarlet more affordable by initially having one lens (the fixed zoom on the Scarlet) that could cover most productions, then as budget grows you can expand into the Primes...

the diagonal of any sensor = square root of (sensor height squared + sensor length squared)

the general sensor data can be found here:
http://rebelsguide.com/dl/sensorSizes_06_cheatSheet.png
http://red.cachefly.net/14/mysterium.jpg
or on a particular camera specs page for mysterium options...

then can be compared to the "lens diameter" specs, which are 32mm for red primes.
http://www.red.com/images/theme/LENSSpecsV12.png

Those pieces of information I already knew about, but as far as I can see there's no confirmation of his guess that the total number of pixels across the full 30x15 sensor is 5520x2742 and therefore no way to confirm his guess that the 5120x2650 'active' area measures 27.7x14.7. Not that it makes that much of a difference, if Jim says it fits within the 32mm diagonal then it fits, I'm just curious.

Edit : just found the thread that post was pulled from and Jim confirmed that the 27.7x14.7 / 5120x2650 (and 16:9 / 2.4:1 derivatives) 'active area' was correct, but also added that the 30x15 / 5520x2742 'total area' might change somewhat.

Thank you. Do the 25mm and 35mm require support?
I had the same question and was assured by multiple RED staff at the NAB party that the answer is no.

With one of those primes, though, a Scarlet will be pretty front-heavy in DSMC mode. Those lenses are pretty substantial.

Yeah, I noticed that too. They seemed a little bit heavier than I had imagined. They are in the 4 lb range? Is that correct? That being said, I did think these lenses were absolutely outstanding and amazing. Can't wait to play with them. :)

No support necessary for RPPs.
