  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

Jeff... I think you are about right. Actually, a few of the RPPs will go out well past 32mm but shooting 4.75K will be the safe way with Monstro. Then, the question will be is it better to shoot 4.75K with no breathing or 5K with a still lens?

Jim

Wha? Why would the RPPs not even go to 5k on Monstro?

Second question: will you release a Monstro that's sized for the RPPs?

The pixels are larger on Monstro so 4.75K is the safe max with RPPs or MPs. Monstro IS sized for RPPs at this resolution. Over 100fps at this size.

but the smallest advertised Monstro is FF, which means using the RPPs leaves a bunch of area unused. Why not make a Monstro that's the same sensor size as the Mysterium-X that'll be in the EpicX?

Probably because of improvements in noise and sensitivity that will come with using larger photosites in the Monstro (also, it wouldn't be called "Monstro" if it weren't really big...).

I think the real question is whether RED will eventually make cine lenses that cover all of the Monstro sensor area, unless they think that the full Monstro sensor is only for use by still shooters.

I second this request, even though I know that you said many times it won't happen, Jim :-)

Epic-X will be, after all, RED's motion picture system first and foremost. RED being a digital cinema company, why not have the very best of the best in its primary system for cinema acquisition?

David,

Since Monstro has a 3:2 aspect ratio, what would be the use of cine lenses covering the entire sensor? That's not much need for 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio in cinema. If you want to finish wide-screen, you're back to cropping the sensor again...

It's a different story if you're talking about anamorphic lenses. Or maybe, if you want to shoot 4:3 and finish wide-screen, having the advantage (and peace of mind) of repositioning the frame (as with the traditional 1.85).

He did? One of the Red employees told me at the Reduser party on Wednesday that due to the popularity of the RPPs they will probably make a Monstro sized for it (and not the FF)

Yes, but if you are finishing to 1.78/1.85, you aren't cropping all that much, so ideally you'd still want a lens that nearly covered all of FF35 (1.50 : 1), except for the extreme corners. Certainly you'd want to be able to use more than just 31mm or 32mm out of 36mm in terms of the width, assuming you want to be using a 6K RAW recording to work from. But a little vignetting in the corners of FF35, that would probably be fine.

That would be great indeed. But can they fit enough 6 micron photosites on a 30 x 15 mm sensor?

Wouldn't it be the same as shooting 6K Monstro cropped (using only part of the sensor)?

We are working on a bundle that includes all six lenses... I will post when it is live.

I didn't see the bundle deal when I ordered the 5 lens set tonight. I hope I still qualify for the set price for the 18mm and the 300mm.

Clarifications will be great.

You qualify...

And I think he is talking about full 16:9 coverage. I am almost certain that it was full 5k for those shooting for 2.4:1.

I remember you saying, unless my mind fails me, that RPPs will cover 5k 2.4:1 on Mostro, but not 16:9. And I think the number for full 16:9 coverage on Mostro was the 4.75k that you mentioned here.

Did I get that wrong?

As I understand it, the wider the aspect, the larger the image circle needed, unless you are using anamorphic lenses. So 2.4:1 will be harder to cover than 16x9.

Unless you can find my quote... your memory has failed you. I can't remember posting exactly what Monstro coverage would be with RPPs. Although that is something that can easily be done now with math and the specs given.
