  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine Primes on EPIC, first Impressions

I thought Rokinons had hard stops being full manual lenses and all. What am I missing here?
It goes just past infinity. the L shape you see above the ininity logo, Infinity is at the horizontal line. The infinity symbol itself is probably something i cant explain to you (anyone?) but nothing is in focus from my understanding/expirience. weird right?

That piano shot is lovely Kyle.

I just came back from another quick test with these lenses....I noticed that they hard stop just a couple of millimeters past the infinity symbol...and once you hit that mark...your picture is completely out of focus....so on infinity pinsharp throughout, and once you go 2-3mm past...BAM all blurry.

Another downpoint of these lenses is also that they have different front element sizes....on a shoot with mattebox and proper 4x4/5.6 filters thats no issue...but anyone wanting to use these on a run and gun shoot....your 77mm ND fader will only make the 35mm lens happy.

All shot without ND filter, 25fps 5K 4:1 at various shutter speeds.

So do most cinema primes... It's normal to go past a bit. That's so in case of temperature changes and causes the glass elements to expand and contract, you can always get infinity focus. Otherwise you'd be screwed.

Thanks this is news. I guess its not THAT "weird"...

@ Dominik - Thanks. Shots like that make me want a monochrome.

I only found the 85mm to be of different size (72mm front).

Fixed that with a step up ring.

Is the 8mm and 14mm different as well?

All of these are on the 35mm at 2.8 (Bloody head), 5.6 (Fight scene, interview), 11 (girl on wall) ISO 800 180 shutter angles ( except interview...90 degree)

I think I remember the 24 being 77mm as well but regardless it would be great if they all matched. Any body know updates on the 50mm?

Yes 24 and 35 are 77 whilst 85 is 72.

I would love a 50mm :)

hey guys if you want to standardize your lens front, try these guys.........http://www.cordvision.com/lens-upgrades/
I have used their cine ring adapters to standardize my 24mm, 35mm & 85mm Rokinons to Arri 80mm standard.......they work a treat....! and they have a good lens cap option as well.......!

cheers
Paul

Idk how I missed these the first time around. beautiful

Nice frames Kyle, any NDs?

If youre referring to the ones I just quoted...Those are Dom's lol Cant take credit where it isnt due. But if you saw my other ones before I removed them from my dropbox (which I just discovered they have to remain there to stay up and posted) I did not have ND.

Kyle,
i haven't had any issues with vignetting using these cine ring adapters, but i am using a 4x5.65 clamp on Matte box & filters.......and im only shooting 4KHD with them at the minute.....i can test for you in 5K on the 24mm.....?
cheers

That would be fantastic!

Good looking frames Kyle. And thanks for posting full rez ! Bravo!

For those who need help looking at the full rez, you can right click on his frame and 'open in new tab'.
Then you can fill the screen, go one to one pixels, and pan around in it.

Kyle...
No Vignetting at all at 24mm 5K 2:1 with cine adapter rings on lens........

edit: wait a minute......how in the hell do i get a higher rez images uploaded......?
