  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine lenses are here!!

How do these compare with Canon L series, besides the cost?

They're comparable. I wouldn't say the Samyang's are better, but they hold their own in lens tests. Theyre pretty similar in terms of image. You can consider them manual focus and aperture Canon L glass.

re: build quality of rokinon lenses.

Dropped one from 3 feet. Housing broken all over the place--massive destruction. Not a ding, more like what happens when you drop an egg from that distance. It felt pretty well built... but the cost difference certainly reveals itself in the weakness of the housing.

hmmm .... with post breathing removal and with the increased iso of the new sensors ... these are looking very compelling.

I mean, it's kind of radical, but these could compete for 90% of the jobs that master primes have (i.e. shoot at t2.8 with a new sensor and post process breathing, beats a master prime in a test). That's like at 75x price reduction (i.e. $349 instead of $26,000) , which would mean the depreciation of lenses will move from 5 years to about 6 months ... crazy talk ?

Would be interesting seeing a rack focus test of a master prime at 1.3 on a old sensor vs a Rokinin at 2.8 on a new sensor (with post process breathing removal) - and see what percentage of the movie audience could tell the difference at dcp 2k. Would be reminiscent of the film vs digital comparisons a few years back. I'd think every year for the next three years, the difference would close.

Feeling dumb asking, but how do you remove lens breathing in post? By carefully manually readjusting scaling?

High end way is using some nodes in nuke to completely normalize the lens( if there are some lines in the shot, or do a len matrix chart before the shot), low end way is just do as you say ... in AE line up the edges, key scale. I'm assuming in the next year or so they will just add a node/effect for "lens looks", which would have a little lens data base (could correct for a bunch of things that way, could even do a "sharpness" thing). Does take more time in post, but software is getting cheaper and cheaper ... while high end glass always seems to be expensive.

Thanks Patrick ! That's exactly what I was looking for. Guess I'll have to check out Nuke once more !

And given some time I'm pretty sure all this will be fully automatically controllable in post... I'd still prefer to use high end glass, but sadly enough I'm not always able to!

I hope with enough pressure Samyang will create metal cine housings for a new lineup of 'pro' cine lenses. PL mount, proper witness marks, same size diameter ends, and of course a reliable metal build. If they charge $2k a lens or less, they'll create a whole new market of new pro superspeed cinema primes.

Here is most of a message I sent to Rokinon through FaceBook. Maybe if more of us will send them similar messages and comments, they will take action.

"I can't tell you how happy I am that you guys have started testing the waters with your cine modified lenses. But, having lenses of different physical lengths with the focus gears in different places and different front diameters is totally missing the mark. There needs to be aperture and distance marks on both sides of the lens. Not just on the left side. Also, having provisions for a bayonet mount lens hood is useless in the motion picture world. I guarantee you that if you made them similar to the Zeiss CP line or the new Canon Cine primes with a common front diameter of, say, 95mm or 114mm, and a price of under $1000 per lens, you would without a doubt become the darling of the indie world overnight. Seriously. Overnight.

Your 35mm Cine breathes crazy bad. But, I believe, people would forgive that if the housings were such that they didn't require repositioning of the mattebox and follow focus every time a lens was changed. If you offered the line in a PL mount, you wouldn't be able to keep them on the shelf."

Just ordered the 24mm, 35mm and pre-ordered the 85mm. Would love to see a 18mm 50mm and 100mm to add to the set.

Same here, btw the nuke feature (might be nukex), also works on old glass ... so you can do camera solves on glass that even creates "curvy" lines. I think it's a cool feature for the "old glass" crowd, in that they can still do high end vfx with glass that has issues ... though it does take a bit more time then having perfect glass like the Master Prime.

Now I can't wait to test it :)

Terry how did the procedure go on your Rokinons?
I might have a few along with a Tokina to send.
Did it take long?
Should I send one lens at a time so I dont lose time used?

Process was quick and painless. I sent two lenses at the same time and got them back, if I remember correctly, in about a week. (Certainly wasn't more than 6-7 business days.) I opted for the full package but you can do 3rd party rings and caps if you want to save a little money. I highly recommend Duclos!!

Thanks Terry.

I will probably send soon since I have a camera to work with yet.

Just in case, I am ordering another lens (Rokinon or Samyang havent figured out the diff yet) from BH asap.

Again thanks :)

So, ran into the first issue I've had so far with these Rokinons. My 35mm Cine is experiencing some side-to-side rattle... the interior glass hosuing/group has developed a somewhat significant amount of play. What's strange is that this doesn't affect IQ at all since it's just rattling against the housing and not going in and out of the housing. I may try and get this covered by warranty as I've only had this lens for about a month now, and I don't know how this issue developed (if it even came from the factory like this).

I've used my 24, 35 and 85 set quite alot now and didn't expect them to go this far. My 24 & 85 are still going rock solid strong. I've had the 85 for a year now and it's been through the rigors of countless productions... still not one single hitch and by far the best wide open performance of the 3 lenses.

Glass from the Gangnam part of the world for dirt cheap... who'da thunk?

+1
I have done (and feel) exactly like you. I got the 24mm and 35mm and preordered the 85. I´ve only used them a little, but they have impressed me so far. How can they not at that price?

Shervin have you considered getting them a mod from Duclos?
I too am shooting for all Rokinon/Samyang Cine glass asap.
Just trying to shift funds around during this BT Scarlet purchase craze :)

Still impressed with these lenses. The 24mm has alot of chromatic abberation at any f stop below 5.6... I may have to get it checked out compared to others as it's unacceptably present sometimes, especially against a white sky. Here are some more stills... quick RCX grade to make it look like film. The 85mm is the killer lens in the entire set, followed by the 35mm.

Can't beat the frigging quality for the price!

John where did you order from?
Cant find any Cine 35mm unless I go with Samyang.

I also have noticed weird stuff on my 35mm cine version. Nothing too bad so far, but sometimes, for a second there, when I turn the iris ring nothing happens (aka it doesnt close). It has only happened a few times so far, so... hopefully it'll stay that way! I love that lens otherwise.

My 24mm cine version is also here, and it is SIGNIFICANTLY softer than the 35. I mean, it makes sense, but, has anyone else can confirm this in their experience?
