  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve 8.0.1 and Resolve Lite available now

I am new to Resolve so sorry if this has an obvious answer...but I'm trying to get my Final Cut Pro timeline into Resolve Lite, so i exported an XML from Final Cut Pro. But I'm not seeing any import XML option in Resolve Lite...Can anyone help me out? btw I am using FCP7 not FCPX

Thanks in advance

-Spencer

The Load button on the conform page loads EDL, AAF, and XML formats.

I would strongly suggest reading the manual for Resolve. It is reasonably deep software and has it's own ways of doing things that have been honed through years of colorist input. Trying to pick your way through it without at least reading the manual is not a particularly good way of getting the most out of it.

We had trouble dealing with XML lists, but had no problem with a regular CMX-style EDL on the last Resolve project I worked on. But that was version 7.x.

I believe Alexis Van Hurkman is assisting with a new manual. The guy's a terrific writer, and I'm hoping he can bring some practical, real-world tips to making it a little more accessible. Some of the Resolve features are very deep and hard to find. It's a lot easier to get there with the full control service (especially once you stumble upon the "more" button). Very slick design.

It's a testament to DaVinci's design and experience that I think most colorists can kind of feel their way around the system fairly quickly. The setup is a little bit of a bear, and there are some "gotchas" in there, but DaVinci's support helps a lot.

This trick doesn't work on Lion...

Jake, how are all hardware drivers working with Lion? Cuda, RED Rocket? If all of those work well, then Lion will be great to work with Accusys shared storage.

I have no answer to those questions. I just tried this trick on developer version of Lion and it didn't work, while on SL it worked just fine. I'm nowhere near close to switching to Lion on my production Mac. There are many apps, that still needs to be certified for Lion.

Ha .. I feel you.

I'm cloning my system drive to a larger volume.

When I am done and satisfied that things are working as normal .... I'll upgrade to Lion using the old system drive as an in situ test of how good/bad everything is. I figure that is the "worst case scenario" for getting all drivers and such working.

The full version of Resolve requires a dongle. The software is downloadable, but you need the physical dongle to run it.

You have to buy version 7 first then download.

No, all you need is a dongle. Download the latest version and install. No version7 required.
Agree just stating what I had to go thru.
I couldnt buy a boxed version of 8, I had to buy the older version 7 that comes with the dongle.
Im one of those folks that love the smell of a newly delivered software box ;)
I still have my Softimage 3, Alias PowerAnimator and Alias Sketch! software boxes with manuals intact.
So when my gf lets me use some freakin closet space, i can put it up and bask in its glory ;)

What I want to know is if I can buy a box with Resolve version 8 and the dongle.

So far all I've seen are Resolve version 7 boxes.

I specifically waited fro v8, and frankly have no interest in having v7 and its manuals and etcetera around.

I suppose I'd be happy with just a dongle, but for my money I'd really like a printed manual and such as well for the version I want to use.

On another note ... using the heck out of Resolve Lite, and I love/hate it. I guess I'll post the gory whining elsewhere.

I was told by Canadian rep that BM is being green :) Yes I would love the actual box but its moot now since R8 is installed :)
Love the dongle ;)

There are no manual inside, just the dongle and disk, that's all. Just download the latest version of resolve and you good to go.

Jake you think one day you will release a step by step tutorial on R3D and Resolve 8 :)
Still learning here but eventually pushing buttons wont be enough.
I have a few weeks to learn all this then workflow is next.

FXPHD is pretty good at step by step and overall operation. Version 8 is not terribly different from 7, except multilayered timeline and XML support with few new specialized HSL curves, channel blender and color wheels. If that's all you need, FXPHD is highly recommended. If creative grading and advanced techniques is what you seeking, then not so much...
The biggest problem, that I see with the course, is the instructor using DV panel. There is nothing wrong with it, unfortunately, overwhelming majority of students, use either Wave or MC Color. So, I think it would be more productive, if instructor paid more attention to that fact.

Thanks Jake for the tip.
We went ahead and requested FXPHD plus TAO.
Still a week away from actually training with it, cant wait :)
