After getting the go ahead from BMD, I can report that the new version of Resolve is a big leap from what we know Resolve has been. I feel confident to do full conformance inside Resolve. So, finally, good bye to the round-trip to FCP/PP ! Cudos to the Resolve development team, specially to Peter and Rohit.

Thanks Luis for the heads-up.

I got to see demos at NAB 2013, any changes to the GUI?

Ive had to update our training twice in the last two years (v8 and v9), will we need to go one more?

Nice Luis!! Do you mind telling us what changes are most useful to you?

I cannot post screenshots yet, but what I can say it that is very intuitive. However, training needs to be updated since there are changes all around, particularly on the editing section. It feels familiar to the main stream NLEs; replacing clips, changing duration, transitions, etc, all is there.

I think that the DCP authoring, even thought is only at this point with easyDCP, is a big time hit. I encoded DCPs from short edits directly from the R3Ds, with very reliable results. Since I do not have an easyDCP license, the DCP comes with two watermarks; one with easyDCP logo, and the other with the slick, new Resolve Logo. I have played them in my QuVIS DCPPlayer without a problem.

In both options (LGG and Log), they added a forth wheel to control the Offset, as well as the Contrast and Pivot controls.

Also, the menu for the Element panels has changed, in my opinion for the good. Still learning them, but they are more consolidated, so they are more easily accessible.

Hope this helps...

Thanks Luis cant wait to try it :)

Just to clarify: that is in the on-screen controls. Trackball support for offset is only available in the DaVinci panels.

.

The panel mappings for the MC Color panel have also been substantially improved, with things like contrast and pivot now included on knob controls, and much more logical and direct groupings of controls. I think they've done an excellent job of providing a lot of useful things (along with more efficiency) on third party panels that weren't there before, while still retaining the advantages of using the DaVinci panel set. That's a rather delicate balance, and they've done it nicely.

I really like the new split screen modes (they appear on both the interface and the output monitor), the gradient power windows (that's their version of "edge windows", like you have on Baselight, and works very well with the ability to have multiple windows in one node) the Lightbox being available on the SDI output, and the presence of "last correction" and "two corrections back" buttons on the keyboard (finally! these things were previously available only on the DaVinci panel set).. If you happen to use Final Cut Pro X, you'll likely find a lot to like as that support has been enhanced to include things like titles coming across (yes, Resolve 10 has a titling tool) and, in the latest beta, support for compound clips.

Thanks M Most for clearing that up.

We use the Avid Artist and found it to be lacking with the older versions.

There are many amazing features in this new release but one of my personal favorites is using the thumbnail mode in the Lightbox over SDI. It's such a great way to look at your project as a whole. Edit mode is really great and the OFX plugin architecture is really well incorporated. I find myself using the new gradient window quite a bit as well. Like Luis mentioned, the Tangent Element mapping has changed which takes some getting used to but overall there are some nice improvements there as well (although it would be nice to be able to user customize the panel). The new edit mode with online editor is nicely done, including adding your choice of Stereo, Mono or 5.1 audio tracks. Overall this is going to be another great release.

Mike is correct; it is only an on-screen control. Than is an area that hopefully in the near future BMD will map out to the Element 4th trackball. However, having it in both menus, we do not need to be clicking LGG/Log to have access to those controls.

I agree 100% with Mike: the OFX incorporation makes this new release a completely new paradigm. All OFX that are out there, officially released or not, work seamlessly. That is one of many reasons I think the full conformance can be easily done within Resolve.

Also, based on my testings, 95%+ of the editorial effects, such as transitions, etc., are recognized by Resolve from the XMLs, so I do not foresee to do any round-trip any more.

One thing that is a major improvement is the use of opacity, which is nice. The rebuild from an Avid AAF is better than it ever has been, but one of the reasons I mentioned Final Cut Pro X is that it's clear that DaVinci has done a lot of work to make movement between that program and Resolve quite seamless. Most of what you do in FCPX does come across, with the only caveat being that you might have to do a bit of modification, like resizing titles. But the effects themselves come across properly, which is significant. And features like match frame and replace edits have never been in Resolve before, and make it much quicker to do typical conforming tasks. With version 10, it's much more practical to consider Resolve as the primary conform tool than it ever has been.

Sold!!! Release date?

Thanks for the info.

Would you be a bit more specific? Since FCP X has no 3rd party effects architecture other than Motion templates or FxPlug2 via Motion, is the conform limited to FCP X's own built-in effects? Or does it do the translation between an effects family in FCP X's structure and its OFX counterpart (if one exists)? For example, will Sapphire Edge filters and transitions translate correctly into Sapphire OFX filters in Resolve? Are effects filters still only added as grading nodes and not timeline effects? Grading nodes-only was the way it was demoed at NAB.

Also, do temp grades done in the FCP X Color Board translate into a primary node? If so, what about HSL keys and shape masks done in the FCP X Color Board?

Thanks.

I was surprised at how good performance was with the additional noise reduction parameters (temporal) and optical flow retime as well (which rocks!)
the Sapphire OFX demo ver is so cool - some playback real time for me, others, not much... the toolbox (motion tab) for clips in the timeline is a godsend.
I mean the whole thing really. Oh and one click DCP creation - crazy.

This was/is a big deal for me and saves me from creating color quilts of entire sequences while still being able to load up the color controls and making minute adjustments to see how everything plays well together. Took a very brief look at it during NAB. The new editing features look very nice. OFX support allows me to avoid going into After Effects for certain things as well.

I'll still be cutting in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, doing a bit work in Redcine-X Pro, then jumping into Resolve for sure.

Just waiting on the...... actual release.

I was talking specifically about the title tool.

OK, I was confused, since your reply was in context to Luis talking about the OFX effects and 95% compatibility. So what about the other effects? Right now I can only assume that "editorial effects" is really only talking about dissolves and speed ramps, which is not very compatible with most complex offlines. Any sense of that yet?

I recently became a dealer for Blackmagic (primarily for the cameras - which we make underwater housings for - but the full line as well) and the recent price drop of the original cinema camera to $1995 has made it even more attractive since you also get a Resolve full license to with dongle. My distributor rep says he believes that if we purchase now we will be entitled to free upgrade to v10 but haven't had a chance to ask BMD directly.

Does anyone know if that is the case?
