  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Release Date yet?

The entire day i was checking the forum and red.com
It was disappointing to not get any concrete details but when it comes out it'll be the best thing ever so I'll just save for a ONE in the mean time

I already HAD saved. But camera rentals were taking too much of a bite out of my budgets so I pulled the trigger 2 months ago and went to Panasonic. I guess when I'm ready for #2 I will do the same thing again. At some point you just have to move on and take what you can get. It's like trying to date a supermodel.

aiming for a supermodel and settling for a hooters girl is not such a bad thing...LOL

Unless its delayed so long that one of the other manufacturers come out with something "good enough" for the price and rains all over the Scarlet parade.

I think that if they get it out in a years time, they'll be safe. The other manufacturers are used to taking their time dolling out upgrades.

If nikon had more manual control in video mode, i'd have jumped already. I'm thinking about Canon currently. (BTW, canon can drop they're prosumer camcorders now. They weren't doing much for the video world anyway.)

Red will lose hundreds of sales, but they're still safe. I think they realize that too.

I wish someone would rain on the parade.

Disappointing, but I can understand the postponing. It's awesome that they really put the time into the products and make more reliable tools for us to use.

Red/Jim don't keep us waiting to long..... Look forward to your next announcement. Keep up the great work guys !

I know it's completely possible for RED to delay the Scarlet for MANY more months -- if not years-- knowing things are always changing, but does anyone have at least a vague idea when the Scarlet might be shipping? The announcement made it seem like maybe RED could be shipping them sometime early next year-- the actual production models, not the tats or anything.

I've been casually dipping in and out recently in eager anticipation of RED announcements.

Im a pro photographer that bought a Nikon D3x for about £5k in Jan this year, and can't help feeling that it's already ageing faster than a senior made of cheese running at the speed of light towards the sun, as it does not offer video. It's not even a year old! I can see Nikon bringing something out soon to rival Scarlet.

This is money that I would have happily given to RED for SCARLET/EPIC say (had it been available), as I love the idea of being able to upgrade bits of your camera.

When I first heard of RED, I was blown away by the concept. Now with lots of very affordable options popping up - Canon 5d, 7d, Nikon 300s etc my dilemma (I guess along with lots of others) - the USP of stills/video is being eroded very fast. All it would take (for me) would be Nikon releasing cameras in 'kit' form to blow RED away (for me).

I really want to start shooting video now, and WANT to give you my money RED, but I really need to know something definite soon!

I think it's more of a sign of the exciting times for cameras rather than any RED failing.

In history, I really want RED to be a footprint not a footnote...COME ON RED, I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! GOOD RED, COME ON...THAT'S IT...YOU CAN DO IT

I should say, that Im NOT trying to compare a Scarlet to a Canon 7d....just that there are some good alternatives out there now that weren't there only a short while back.. thanks

…and I'm also Im not trying to compare a Scarlet to a Canon 5D but, here's a full feature film shot with three Canon 5D-MKII's. It was the only camera used. Checkout the trailer for "Mattie":

Film was shot in and around Tucson, Arizona of this year. I was there on the set during the production.

Feedback is welcome.

BEAUTIFUL trailer. That your baby? how much that film budgeted at?

Not my baby but I'm friends with the Director and some of the crew. I shot the behind-the scenes footage and stills for the movie. I couldn't believe when I showed up on the set they were using the Canon 5D-MKII's. They wanted to prove it could be done.

I'm not sure what the budget was but they did use at least three SAG Actors from LA and a stunt guy that was Steve McQueen's stunt double in Tom Horn.

What kind of distribution are they shooting for with this film? Looks like an interesting story.

I believe they are still working that out. I know they are going for a premiere showing early next year. After that it could go to the big screen or just on HBO, Family Channel or something.

Sound issues. What mics did they use? I'm thinking not the best.

Perhaps a remix can help. I heard a lot of reverb and thin sounding dialog in places.

As far as what brand of sound equipment. I didn't take notes on that. I'll try to dig up a photo I shot that will show something… I have to run out the door right now.

I'm thinking that depending where the film ends up, the distributor will finish it off and fix any problems??

I wouldn't expect Scarlet for at least another 12-24 months.

I was hoping for some kind of "real" update for Scarlet (in terms of due date) and was pretty disappointed. From a business perspective, I completely understand their stance - they are focusing solely on the high-end market where they will make more of a return for all of their R&D. Also, it seems like some R1 users may have gotten a bit "ticked" about the whole Scarlet/Soccer Mom deal. Whatever the case is, I got the definite feeling that Scarlet is officially on the back burner - whatever news comes out for Scarlet will be due to the fact that Scarlet shares some similarities with Epic and that's it.

Like I said, I don't fault RED for this, but what does stink about all of this is the fact that when all of this Scarlet talk started (about two years ago), the expectations were pretty near. When Scarlet was officially announced at NAB 08, they were hinting about a working unit for NAB 09. Well, we know what happened there.

Anyhow, the moral of the story I guess is to just keep working, make money and when Scarlet does come out - you'll have probably made enough to just buy a R1.

This is the only shot I have of the sound recording unit:
