  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedVoltXL Single Module

I asked that same question to the RED guys at the booth. The unit on display was just a prototype so things may change, but they said the idea behind that port is it will eventually function as a battery charger input as well.

Thanks Jeff!
It's a neat add on, but then one would still have to have at least two of these plates, if you hook one up to a power outlet. Good thing about the removable cable is, that you can probably power accessories with it, too.

More pictures, from Phil Holland and his NAB journal thread

... in it's pretty early development, the REDVOLT XL Quickplate Battery Adapter:

...I wanted to show a closer look at this guy. One very interesting thing to note is the port for the power LEMO, so you can choose what length cable you'll need for your rigs.

I was thinking more along the lines of charging on the camera, but yeah two plates to swap would be cool with me. I have multiple REDVolt XLs so a couple of lightweight plates and a charge cable would be better than bringing that hefty Quad Charger everywhere I go. Kind of a XL travel charger that also docks to the camera.

You bring up a good point about the module being multipurposed to power accs, as you could mount an XL module somewhere else in addition to the one powering the brain. On one of the cameras in the booth, they had a small bolt on dovetail swivel mount which I believe would mate up to this module. Sorry I didn't get a picture, maybe Phil did?

Actually this one could be very useful, and I asked for it as it turned out for me in some set ups that the Quad Module was way too big, and this now (soon) will give a very nice alternative to the use of a V-Lock Battery plate so to keep the small set up very compact without any protruding a top of the otherwise Long V-Lock battery plate, also as with the 90and 100Whours V-Lock Batteries, no flight restrictions on the REDVOLT XL, which is of course very nice.

I'm pretty excited about this. I's also like to see a belt clip option since you can decide on the power cable length. Also, is the only way to attach this through a V-lock? I would like an option to attach directly to camera as I don't use V-lock.

I don't think the V-Lock is part of this equation. From the prototype I saw at NAB it appears that it will attach via the BACKPACK BASE PLATE and part of the QUICKPLATE system.

Although Jarred posted this image, which shows it not attached to that. Hard to tell where the final design will land exactly.

If it's anything the new BACKPACK QUICKPLATE (SHORT) that I picked up it's gonna rock. Wickedly well built and solid.

Remember that the REDVOLT XL falls within most flight regulations which is great news for the folks who travel and shoot a bunch.

Yeah Phil I was confused at the beginning of this thread that mentioned it locks onto V-Lock. I much prefer the Backplate idea, but as you observed on Jarred's post, he has some other mojo going on there. In any case, if you place an XL battery on the back of the camera, you'll notice that there isn't a heck of a lot of real estate left to hold this battery. I'm amazed they're giving this a go. I hope it's solid because I see this as a nice portable rig.

It's a work in progress until they finalize the design. I can see many ways to skin this cat and potentially even a way it could be used in a bolt/cableless setup on or quickplate setup depending on what's done. Anything's possible.

The NAB prototype was of the QUICKPLATE variety, which you can see in the images above.

I hope it comes soon!!! That is a beautiful piece of tech

What's a bit sad is that all these new plates now feature power out ports and my dual module which is a lot bigger doesn't.... oh well... Guess I'll have to get another one then someday
