  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redvolt XL Module now shipping

I have a request for RED to make a travel charger for the XL. I know the module can also be used as a charger but I would like to travel with a couple of them. The existing quad charger is so heavy.

this makes me worry a bit...

Now after talking to the guys at RED Europe they look into it and it sound like they will replace the batteries and sort things out as good as possible so I'm very thankful for that. Yes these batteries cost quite a bit and they agree they should not break after a couple of shooting days. Our camera is down in spain together with quad charger and XL module so I could not send those in. But if I get more issues thats whats next hopfully these batteries where just some bad seeds so we can continue with no more issues.

im just worried as they have no idea when ill get mine XL module and if then it kills some of my batteries,... im not relly looking forward to this. didnt order any V-mount batteries and now i have to rent them out everytime... as i have XL sitting at home... 2-3weeks... yeah

+1. Would be awesome if this theorectical XL travel charger can take on 2 Volts as well. I completely agree that the quad charger is much too heavy for travel and having multiple travel chargers for the volts is a bit cumbersome. I can't imagine anyone using XL's or Volts not wanting this.

I agree to that, such a Dual-Travel-Charger would be awesome. Or, why not make a modular charger-system?

Mine is supposed to be delivered by the end of the week, but this will be the 3rd ETA I got already, I hope third time is the one.

Ours kick ass. Had trouble with the red quad charger but ordered a new one and now got 8 XL batteries and 8 volts + two travel chargers. hope that will cover our power needs.

Björn, did you get any feedback on those dead XLs?

8 XLs and 8 volts, yeah, i guess thats a good setup to come through a day. :)

One more question. How does the camera handle the priorities with this module? Lets say the XL runs empty and the camera switches to a REDVOLT in the sidehandle, will it switch back to a new XL immediately after swapping or will it suck the little one in the SH dry and then switch to the XL?

I never really tested this with the DUAL or QUAD-module... but especially with that new XL-module, i would prefer to use the battery in the SH only as last resort.

Any thoughts?

I will confirm later, but I do believe the priority will snap back to the XL.

In my case, the only testing I have done, is to power on the camera with AC, install the Redvolt XL, and then pull the power plug. I have done this several times in normal usage and so far it has just worked. I was not sure what was going to happen the first time. :)

Yes, it uses the XL as priority source and switch back once you've changed battery.

Had some issues with our XL module... and now I realize whats the problem.

The camera had a broken pin on the module connector... do not know how or when it happen, been having the +1 module on for quite a while and I have not seen the issue before. I guess some rental client took of the module and managed to mess up the connectors... well thats not all, the +1 connectors is also broken... well thats not all... the quad bat module also has broken pins.. well thats not all, I used the XL module with the +1 module... well, that toasts the batteries... 8 XL batteries are now toast... well that not all, those batteries toasted our Quad charger so it had to go back for repair... well thats not all, I got a new quad charger and I think that one is toast as well...

I think all the above is not covered by red warranty.. so in a very short time I managed to have camera and all our power solution toasted.

You can probably calculate the costs....

Dragon brain needs new rear end module connector.
1. quad module broken.
1. +1 module broken.
8 XL batteries toasted.
1 XL module, not sure if it works or not.
2 Quad Chargers borken. cost 400 sterlings to get fixed.

I really hope this gets sorted in a superior way. But I have great doubts I already paid for the second charger, as the first one was out of warranty... (I never really used it, only tested it a few times as we did not use XL bats until we got the XL module / dragon and then problems started)

One thing I kind of learned... these rear end module connectors can not really handle rental clients. or daily on/off modules. I was hoping the +1 would save the brain but I guess they manage to wack that one as well possibly when trying to mount the XL straight onto the body..

Those rod mounted V-locks with Lemo connector maybe is not all that bad after all, LOL.

Any one that has a dragon free to rent for the 16th of april?
