  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDUSER used to be so BAD ASS.

I am a broke student. I don't own a RED, but I have learned a TON on REDuser (I'm here more than any other site, period). I plan to own one eventually and I even attended NAB in 2011 just for RED. I understand fully the desire for a paid section, but that will obviously piss off some camera owners.

Perhaps to cut back on uneducated posts, it's best to educate? Put a "ban" on unboxing threads outside of an unboxing sticky or section? I dunno, I just worry that segregation in the forum is going to go poorly.

Well said Gavin.... Just a joining fee of $50 would do the trick ? and if your out of line and get kicked well your welcome to join again lol

That's funny, It's weeks I want to say this... The newbie thing is killing the spirit. I don't want this to create segregation between Epic and Scarlet owners, but I think some new members just don't know was was created here and how it has grown... Most of us "know" and respect each other, and there's a huge level of trust among opinions and experiences among the first generation of Redusers.

I do think one problem with REDUser is that since it's actually monitored by RED employees it's kind of become the "Official Tech Support" Genius bar. Less answers and more questions. And a bit of entitlement to answers. "This is the official forum right? So why hasn't my number come up yet?"

Also adding onto my previous thoughts, it probably doesn't help that posting has probably doubled in the last year but we have the same number or less moderators. It's going to inevitably strain the existing system.

I like an owner's section - where the topics really focus on discussing issues related to RED cameras. I don't know about paying for it (though I most likely would), seems like a nice perk for having bought a camera.

I do think a better lockable FAQ section would also filter the noise a LOT. Just as Jarred is offering these great backorder updates, having someone - I would nominate Jeff, he has done a nice job of creating lists in the past - to take charge of an FAQ section where they collate a section for the most frequently asked questions would keep the noise level down. These cameras are and always have been moving targets and the more owners -- and the more updates, not just owners - that we have, the noisier it gets. It's actually getting harder to search for answers when you're trouble-shooting an issue. And I imagine whatever RED releases at NAB is going to compound the issue. A locked, noise-filtered section would be a huge help. Not much discussion, just the latest information and the best-asked questions and best responses. Not a repeat of RECON, but a spot where the FAQ is updated monthly and a spot where the best questions and answers go - make it something to strive for.

I think the original poster should be ashamed of themselves...hold on, because you can't deal with change you want to create a separation from the beginners and dare I say, "professionals"? You will fall far behind with this metality. Forum noise is pretty standard these days and "stupid ass" comments come from all corners here at reduser as far as im concerned. If the quality of the forum needs work, then let's look at that. But the way you talk about beginners and scarlet owners is pure filth.

Im not ashamed of my self not one bit

as a matter of fact i see lots and lots of positive feed back
and the private message im getting are very positive also.

Im my post its clear i know Scarlet users owners are on top of it and not an issue at all.
Some of my friends own Scarlets and i dont see any problems with anything at all.

But it has gotten to the point where this can be improved.

I'm a quite prolific new REDuser. Sorry If I've cluttered up the forums for anyone, that is not my intention. I sincerely try to contribute, through either courtesy, gratitude, the odd joke, rebuttal of what I perceive as the odd agenda driven idiot, and only answer comments and offer perspective where I feel I reasonably can. I spend significant time on RU reading everyday as I often find something to learn from or to consider, and so I'm grateful to many of you. Yet there's no denying that the new wave of Scarlet owners, of which I am so happily a part, has created a quantum gap in knowledge and experience clearly detrimental to some of the established and most valuable contributors. So yes, unfortunately, a separate "pro" section makes sense.

But I would ask consideration perhaps first for a "beginners section" (or at least in conjunction with a pro'wners section) that could hopefully serve to redirect much of the traffic - which can be frustrating to even many a newer RED user - but also provide a place where those who need to ask potentially silly or obvious questions may do so without fear of wasting peoples time, or worse recrimination and or dismissal which are a bit of an internet forum norm.

A lot of the noise threads are clearly associated with "Beginning" ownership and the same inevitable "beginner" questions as you watch people embark on their RED learning curve.

This section could obviously still be frequented by those who have the time and inclination to lend a hand, a few new moderator/mentors could perhaps be appointed. Hard not to feel that this could potentially mean a lot less noisy traffic in the established forums. And is a good place for the more advanced beginners to contribute and give back and perhaps earn their pro forum stripes.

Importantly I believe this would also give a chance for the kind of respectful banter and community to organically form, that is quite apparent among many of the senior members - while protecting the senior members from a painful but to be fair, pretty natural period of growing pains and developing relations. People do want to interact and discuss, and this is a key way we all learn. I personally think that this needs to be taken into consideration.

Some may suggest Scarlet User, this was probably it's initial intent, but besides the state of decay and info pipeline issues, there is a pretty large discrepancy even among just Scarlet owners now, such users as Phil Holland leaping obviously to mind, but there a quite a few others also. Also there's even the odd quite clueless new Epic owner. So I think "beginner" is probably the better positioning, with offending threads easily being vetted and moved to the beginners section by moderators to help clean up REDuser so too speak.

Best

Lliam

everything about scarlet belongs the scarletuser...so simple!

The thing is, it's not that simple. The 2 cameras have a lot in common. I like Liam's idea of having a beginners section and a moderator who would move all naive/duplicate/dumbass questions out of the regular forum into that one, sort of the way CML does it. Of course, there would have to be someone in that forum to answer those questions.
While we're on the topic, I propose a ban for anyone who posts "AMAZING!" after anything that Jim or Jarred says. Even if it is amazing, at least come up with something constructive to say. Oh, and scarlet users, can you please go out and shoot something with your new camera before you start wanting to put a new sensor in there. A new sensor really isn't going to make your movie any better, shooting every day will. Ok, I'm done ;)

In my opinion there are simply too many industry discussion topics on RU which are not remotely camera specific Kemalettin. Anyhow, I appreciate the suffering of some of the established on here, but there is also a lot of excitement and good will around the RED forums too, which would be pretty tragic to see destroyed through the feelings of "elitist" sentiments that Reduser Matthew Scott obviously just felt. Useful if we all try not to give or take offense I'd say.

And I'm done too.

Except, P.S. Shane, that post was AMAZING :ihih:

Just limit the ability to start a thread. I don't even open about 85 to 90 percent of the threads started because I can see pretty quickly they don't offer anything for me by the title (or the spelling within it). When Reduser converted to its present look it became more difficult to search for a thread. When I look for a thread in this new outlay, I often pass right over the one I'm looking for when I'm scanning the list. So, with fewer threads it should be easier to find what we each think is pertinent.

But at the same time, those who are in Reduser Apprentice mode (able to post but unable to start a thread) still have questions. So, Red should spend some money and hire someone who is knowledgeable to be available to those with questions. Either make it a thread the apprentices can post in to ask a question, or make it a PM for direct contact and let the designated moderator post their question if it's one that might benefit all.

We have to understand that Reduser has mult-levels of customers. But we must also be aware that it is important to keep our collective mind engaged so the apprentices can learn from them. But all levels are important

My 2 cents

My 2 cents

I feel I am in a unique position to answer this thread for the following reasons:

I am one of the original REDUsers
I used to be a "problem child" on REDUser (Like BigLu now complains of)
I now run an online academy of over 100 students for EPIC and SCARLET, and most of them are SCARLET users.

Where to begin: First off, the Scarlet is a RED camera. It's as powerful or even more powerful than the RED ONE. It is a part of the RED family, and therefore the SCARLET user is a part of the RED family. We're not going to put them "in the back of the bus" It's not who we are. Or at least who we should be..

In terms of cost, the Scarlet is very similar to the RED ONE. And in terms of the buyers, I can remember back in the day so many RED ONE Users saying "I have almost broke myself buying this thing!" The Scarlet users of today, are the RED ONE users of yesterday. Some jumped before they were ready, and are expressing that concern and frustration on here. It's been going on for a long time.

With "separating the forum" or a "paid membership" we are assuming we know who we're going to learn from next. Alas it's never that simple.

The problem is not Scarlet.. It was not the RED One. It's the poster. When I first got on here, I was arrogant, I was angry with choices RED was making, I was impatient. I "shared" all of this on REDUser, and sadly it did a lot of damage and cost a few relationships. Some of which have never fully recovered. I was new to the whole "Communication without consequence" thing.. I did not understand that co-existing in the community was more important that being right. Back then we were all new, and Jim, Jarred, Ketch, Gibby, etc were very patient with me. However it was not without it's rough spots.. I can still remember a very "tense" phone call from Jim one day! :)

Over time, I learned.. I got better, and I hope I have become a contributing member of this society. Even today though, there are members on here, and things that happen that cause me to write some of my more famous posts.. But 9 times of out 10, I delete them before I post them.

Even Jim is not above this.. How many times have we read threads from him that suddenly disappear. We all suffer from this at one time or another.

Scarlet users are our family. And they are not the bastard child. There are now, as we were then. In fact they are smart, brave people who were smart enough to look beyond the bull of Sony and others, and realize that the best camera around was the RED. Just like we did. To deny them, is to deny our own past. The quickest way to lose where you are going, is to forget where you came from.

Solution?: Yes their is one. But it's not a shotgun approach, it's a rifle. moderators will need to increase (I'll volunteer) and moderation will need to be a little tougher. More important, posters need to be told where they are off base, and how to improve.

There is no "School" on how to behave on a forum, and the internet itself brings out the worst in many people. I have the same frustrations as others. There is a user on here so offensive to me, that I find myself not wanting to post in threads he comments in. He's taking a lot of the fun out of it for me, but for now, I just breath. :)

As a community our strength is in our numbers.. God willing those number will grow. We just have to deal with this one thing at a time.. Sorry, but it's the only real solution.

I agree with BigLu that something has to be done.. But REDUser is for just that.. Those that use REDs..If we need to clean it up, then we'll just have to grab a toothbrush, get on our knees, and start scrubbing.. One tile at a time.

An owners section is a good idea but may not solve everything and is limiting to some degree. Some of the drawbacks have been pointed out as not successfully contributing to an architecture capable of bringing RU back to its" formal glory". The most notable drawback is some of the great DP's, technicians, auteurs we have all learned with are nots Red owners. Maybe there is a multi-pronged approach or maybe this thread could generated enough suggestions from people who care that Jim and Jarred will be able to data mine it and come up with a solution.
I really wish i had a solution because in some ways i feel like i am just adding to the noise but my sentiment is being voiced here and I just wanted to respond with support as this is very important in my eye as well.

Hey BigLu, Feel you bro - but you will be labeled an "elitist" . . . which is complete bullshit

I have also suggested (several times) a Lynda.com style Paid Education model whereby we can learn from the Michael, Evin, Kilgroe, Tonaci, BigLu, Benzo, Ted, Stuart . . . . etc etc etc and affiliated industry guest speakers of the world to make RU a rich/dynamic educational experience - not just a Facebook style site. There is so much talent in and around RED that goes untapped and unshared.

Some good suggestions here already. Jay, you're right, if we want to clean it up we may have to do it ourselves. Elsie, good idea on the posting restrictions and pretty easy to implement, although you may see a lot of bs posts from those trying to reach the magic number.
Lewis and Lliam - I see what you did there.

Josh,

This is already well under way. We already have a guest instructor section with Brad Allen, and a few others, and soon we will be doing even more with the kind of people you speak of.. Can't go into details yet.. But we have been working on what you speak of for a few months now.
