  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDUSER used to be so BAD ASS.

If the camera is so controversial why not create the proper training material to keep those from filling up the RED Forum with BS. I currently own a scarlet now and there are some simple things that I would want to ask that are little different from my Red One. But if the documentation was written a little better I think it would cut down on a lot of unnecessary post.

That and the product information on the store is severely lacking. Also a searchable KB would result in less posts.

I self moderate. I look at the title of the thread first, then the subsection the thread comes from like Scarlet, Jobs, workflow, etc. If it comes from a sub forum I'm not interested in, I do not visit that thread. We've gotten used to having a Nanny for this and a Nanny for that and are sometimes no longer able to do for ourselves. I hate to say it but some of us could just do with a little more self-moderation.

EDIT: And I can't say enough about the mouse-over feature that let's us read the first few sentences of a thread before opening it.

I don't presently own any RED cameras but I am 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% for an isolated owner's only forum away from the main REDUSER site because it's the right thing to do IMO. You have a lot of owners, some ass kicking jive-talking bitch-slapping RED staff on the front line as well as Jim himself, and a whole lot of who knows what the fuck in the middle. Make it easier on both sides for people to get what they need here. You can have all sorts of great stuff that is useful for owners to find on sticky threads, FAQ threads for trouble-shooting and how-to that owners can access on the fly from their notebooks and tablets before calling RED support, and whatever else might be useful for quick and direct access without all the clogging and peanut gallery shenanigans going on with the regular side of things here. Just my two cents.

At one point in my life I frequented a Ferrari User website where they added something along the lines of a Silver Status and Gold Status users which were paid memberships and allowed you access to member only areas of the website. For someone like my self who was intimate with Ferrari mechanical & restoration work, we were given free access to the Gold and Silver areas as a technical experts. Thoughts?

We are headed down a slippery slope here. By restricting access you restrict input, and the discussion will be boring.

Also why do so many feel compelled to invent something "new". Simply assign a couple more Mods to the EPIC thread, or the RED Discussion thread, and have them run that particular section with a little more "kick".. No messing around.. So those of you that want the "old reduser" can go there.

See? Simple.

There's no reason to go crazy over this. We can accomplish Luis' goals without starting up yet another new thing.

I sincerely don't know how to feel about this. There's some reasoning behind this that doesn't fit very well with me. Its true, reduser is much more popular nowadays thanks to the Scarlet and Epic than back in the Red One days. I visited and followed this forum since the early beginnings. Where there also completely beginnerish threads back then, with simple, "how do I do this" questions? Yes. Where there the completely community off topic threads like: "look at me doing my vacation with my Epic!" threads? Absolutely. They where not better than the unboxing videos and excitement pictures we've seen recently. This is good, this is because Red is considered as a purchase that not only is about reason but about passion- this is important if you are a filmmaker, because the camera ultimately shows the world you want to show to your audience. As corny as this sounds, this is true for me.

I've purchased an Epic thanks to a very nice Reduser who swore by it. How many cameras do you have the owners pushing for them to others? Thanks to this site I've met other redusers. This is important to establish a community with the same interests/professional choices in camera gear. If the problem is newbie questions, do create a "Newbie" sub forum for all those starting to get the help they need. Even though I'm an Epic X owner, I don't have a problem to share my experiences with the Scarleteers- in fact, I'm sure some Scarlet owners/users could teach many Epic users a thing or two! Better moderation is an idea, but lets not also cut the enthusiasm of the ones entering th exciting world of Red. By being helpful, todays newbies might be tomorrows employers for many of us, or vice versa!

As a "newbie" I certainly feel a little responsible for being part of the new "noise". I don't own a Scarlet, but both my business partners do, so "we" (the Royal We) technically own two. But I don't personally, and I'd hate to have my access diminished. Though I'd be happy to pay for access. I love this site, have been reading it for over a year, and posting regularly for the past 4 months. I now even have the pleasure of receiving the rare Contax Zeiss lens question in a PM, as some people now know that I have a thing for them. So I feel like I'm contributing a "wee" bit to the site, but admittedly not much. Not until our Scarlets are fully up and running will I really have intelligent stuff to say. Until now, I've been mostly renting REDs as a director/producer.

So, point is, I'd love a way to PAY to maintain my current access to all of you guys. I feel like my world has expanded tremendously over the past 6 months, BECAUSE OF ALL OF YOU. Only two weeks ago I was in a Cafe in Park Slope, where Louis CK was pacing around blocking out his next scene. It's my favorite cafe, I know the barrista, and I sat down to have a my free cup of joe and struck a conversation with Paul Koestner...the DP because I HAD READ HIS POST on how they shoot the show. I asked him if they were still shooting on Master Primes, and all of a sudden BAM! I was having a great 15min chat with the man, all thanks to REDUSER.

Two weeks ago I was on a post with Christopher Probst about his Bruce Willis commercial, and then last week BAM! His article is on the cover of American Cinematographer (my favorite mag).

So. I love this site. It has made me feel like I am part of a community and world I want to live in forever. I'm not a full time commercial director yet. None of my 7 pilots have been picked up. But...here...reading and posting...I know that what I want to have happen is possible, because I'm in the right place. And thats important.

I don't mind a Newbie section. I also would love a place to pay, to maintain my access. I read every Ketch and Toia post with a passion. I'm literally on this site 10 times a day. Please don't take that away from me. I'd be crushed! You guys mean too much! But I will be a little more cautious about what I write, a little more thoughtful, I promise.

Thanks so much.

Nick Morrison.

I'll add one more thing (typical newbie). My favorite part of American Cinematographer, is how all the DP's talk about "the clubhouse". And about how over the years all of them learned from so many of their peers. Cinematography is such a passed on art. You learn on set, but you learn by chatting, sharing, hashing things out. I don't have my "clubhouse", but this is the closest thing to it. I literally live and breathe this site and certainly recognize there is a lot of random postings now. It can certainly be streamlined. But it still needs tobe a place to learn. Even if we haven't been in the business for ever, we all need to start somewhere. So, I'd like us newbies to still find a respectful home within the community. But I also agree that random postings and tiny tests and shots "of my cat" can probably find their own category. I think deleting threads is a little menacing, but maybe moving them over to a "MISC" category would help a lot. I do imagine this requires a substantial bump in moderators.

Best, and thanks.

Where is all this bullshit coming from about paying for this site? I guess you could call me a tight wad but having purchased 2 Epics from Red, I don't think you could call me cheap. What I'm saying is I don't think I should have to pay for information about how to use my camera when it does this certain thing or that certain thing that is out of the ordinary... and is not covered in the manual.

After thinking about it, this site isn't broken. Sure there's more traffic but it's the same type of traffic we had way back when. The new guys who seem noisy at the present will grow into better site members, just like some of us senior members have done. REDUSER IS WATER! LET IT FIND ITS OWN LEVEL!

Im not ashamed of my self not one bit

as a matter of fact i see lots and lots of positive feed back
and the private message im getting are very positive also.

Im my post its clear i know Scarlet users owners are on top of it and not an issue at all.
Some of my friends own Scarlets and i dont see any problems with anything at all.

But it has gotten to the point where this can be improved.

++1

I like the idea of an owners section that is read-only for non-owners.

That way, no one is cut off from info, but the signal to noise ratio will drop.

Maybe make it tiered access for posting. Add a scarlet and epic section. Non-owners will be able to post in the general area of the site, epic and scarlet owners can post in the scarlet section, and only epic owners can post in their section.

No info would be exclusive. If a non-owner had a question about something in a thread they couldn't post in, they could ask their question in the general area and add a link to the original post.

That would be the best solution, IMHO.

...should be a section accessible only by EPIC owners, were all others can read, but not post.

I like this idea. It could be an Epic owners' forum section containing a few useful forums. Readable to all, but only registered Epic owners may post. Could do the same for Scarlet owners to keep everyone happy.

Reduser not broken

Reduser not broken

+1 for Jay Kelleys approach. I don't believe we need to re-invent the wheel. The wheel isn't even wobbly. Just needs some balancing.

Scarlet owners are family here too.

I have learned so much here that if I did not have a camera of my own, I could still have learned whilst preparing to buy one. So, owners forum not best solution, in my opinion either.

Pay site has similar issues. It would restrict the sharing which is the heart of REDUser.

Less places to post with more clearly defined topics and some moderation. That would probably do the trick and not lose what this place has become. And yes, moderators should be able to just kill a thread if it is not valuable. Keeping this forum clean and valuable is not the same as inviting the downfall of freedom and a beginning of the dark days. This is a technical forum. Not a political one.

I for one have learned to re-read every post before I push the button to send. more than half the time, I realize that it does not have to go out based on value to others. That's what we need to get everyone to try to do.

My .02 cents

(I have re-read this and almost didn't send but thought it had at least some value in this discussion so I am posting.) :)

Thanks Lu for saying what I have badly wanted to say for a few months. Thank you.
I used to use this forum regularly as a powerful tool to learn and share. In 08 when I began shooting with R1, it was both a lifesaver, and felt truly like a community.
I have learned an immense amount. When I posted in the past, I always searched and read a lot before posting, doing so only if my search and other research failed.
In years past, a post repeating a question that had already been discussed was met with, at best, a link to the prior post(s), but often with a clear strong suggestion to do one's homework before clogging up the board. No longer.
If I see another "what L lens to buy" post...
There was a very clear dividing line - Scarlet's shipped, and the forum simple became far less useful almost overnight.
I don't disrespect those new and learning - I did the same (although there was not such a forum then!). But it was clear before that I was on a forum with giants, and I needed to quietly read, not post, unless I had dome my homework and/or had something material to contribute. That sense of respect has gone.
I now find myself emailing people that I met through this forum directly for discourse rather than posting.
I would welcome a paid professional forum eagerly. Its not elitist. Its pragmatic - serving very different sets of customers in different ways.

...
There's no reason to go crazy over this. We can accomplish Luis' goals without starting up yet another new thing.

Why do we need to accomplish Luis's goals? (No offense, Luis) What I'm saying is, if Luis has need for information he can just open a thread (as he has done many times in the past) and ask for help or information from the community. Those who are familiar with Luis will respond. When a newbie opens a thread, some helpful senior members will respond and others will just ignore the thread. The opinion stuff is just for entertainment purposes. If you don't want to be entertained, don't visit anything posted in the Off Topic forum. This whole site is well-divided for the user who pays attention. It's easy to tell whose posts to follow and which threads are worth spending some time on.

This place is a thing of beauty.

(Although I still vote for Jay as Moderator.)
