Reduser 4K Portrait Competition...

4K Portrait Reaction

4K Portrait Reaction

Thank you to all that submitted to the first 4K Portrait Competition.
The Portraits are amazing. As we hoped, there is some real talent amongst the community that has truly been assembled in these portraits.

My other hope is that this competition is something that grows and grows with each passing year. So many of us are spread across the globe and we all come together for the NAB Show in Vegas which makes for a unique opportunity to share our lives, stories and our work in special ways such as this. NAB is a learning opportunity and a place where we can catch up with each other, forge new relationships and see what new powerful tools are going to be available in the coming year. But beyond that, my hope is that we can also leverage the power of the NAB Show to enable us to push ourselves in creative ways. The 4K Portrait Competitions does just that.

This year, when you attend, you will see how "The World in 4k" is not just a profound statement, it's the truth and I can think of no better group than the Reduser Community to take the lead. Manufactures, filmmakers and business men and women alike need leaders and direction. We all need influence and sources for ideas and this 4K Portrait Competition will demonstrate how 4K is not only here, but that's literally available to everyone. With tools like RED, Epic and Scarlet and Premiere and Resolve, the barrier to entry is being massively reduced so that limitations on content creation no longer follow the heritage boundaries of "professional" or "prosumer." From what I've seen and the corners of the world in which it comes from, the 4K Portrait Competition will help give way to new rising stars.

Thank you to everyone who rose up to meet the time and creative burden to enter this competition. If you didn't finish or didn't submit, I encourage you to strongly consider doing so in the future. My hope is that with every passing year, there will be massive growth in this unique option for presentation so that we will expand this free contest to include more entries, more categories and eventually more resolution. I know NAB 2013 is a long way off, but I want you to put this competition in your mind so that you can enter next year and come up with ways to improve and expand it.

We always welcome your feedback and hope that the iterative process of forming a contest such as this meets the expectations of everyone involved. We are now putting the final touches on the 4K playback devices for the gallery. I promise: some of the technology and displays in which these portraits will be exhibited will truly show off these works of art in ways in which people have perhaps never seen before. It's taking the culmination of many different groups to pull it off, but I am especially proud of everyone who contributed the most important element: creative motion pictures. Thank you.

I already have ideas for next year and hope that we find that people are excited to grow this opportunity. I have ideas for new categories and welcome your suggestions that will elevate future competitions in the coming years.

We will be submitting the works to RED for judging and continuing to put the final touches on the Reduser Party. I am hoping that it will be a dynamic, fun, educational, liberating and rewarding time for all.
best,
m

First time in Premiere, first 4k export for us. We learned a lot...

I'm glad for the contest because it pushed us out of our 2k comfort zone in terms of post. Post.... We allowed 3 days as a pad for exporting/encoding time. No RR. We crossed our fingers that the DPX file was correct:) That was our biggest worry. Overall, we feel totally comfortable working in Premiere 4K timelines now. So, thanks for the push. Oh, Redcine X is the shit... Did the entire grade in RCX and exported to Premiere.

Looking forward to the next one!

Thanks guys

Just curious Michael, were there a good amount of entries this year?

If there was a good amount this year, I can't imagine what next year will be like if it you do it again!

4K Displays

4K Displays

As you may recall, this years' Reduser Party has a theme to help us focus on the challenges of our craft and what solutions NAB has to offer. We're calling it, "The World in 4K" and I'm happy to announce that we have 6 different 4K exhibition systems, most of which the world hasn't really seen before. I hope this unique way to evaluate the work of 4K artists playing on the work of 4K engineers is something that will celebrate the sprit of Redusers as well as the sprit of NAB.

As for the technology, I'm really excited about what we've been able to come up with and who's come to the table.
As a teaser: this monitor is the smallest one we have. And the white area in the center is 1920x1080. That says something...

Hey Michael,

Are the 6 4k monitors going to play multiple portraits?

I thought there were going to be 10 in total that were chosen, so I assumed there would be 10 monitors.

Can't wait!

The top 10 portraits will play amongst a total of 6-8 displays. This will demonstrate how specific portraits on specific technology show off the variety of display technology.

Michael, that picture makes me want that. Can't wait to see that setup on the show floor!

Will all the 4K Portrait Competition entry's be shown in 4k???
