  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reduser 4K Portrait Competition...

I wouldn't orient the image in "portrait format" as they will be screening these in a standard theater and won't flip the screen or the building on it's side :)

Two questions:

Are multiple entries allowed?

If an entry is submitted in 'Portrait' as opposed to 'Landscape', will it be properly displayed in 4k 'portrait', or will it be pillar boxed into 'landscape'?

Thanks!

So far all venues were I presented Portrait mode Epic material was boxed in... :(

I like the fact that Vimeo has a Portrait style Video player, but no one else seems to have it.

What I do now is bring a 60" Sharp Monitor with me which like my monitors on my desktop, can flip the image in Portrait mode, and that is NICE!!

A girl next to the monitor and you have a full size life model next to a full size girl on a monitor... ;)

Now you’ve got me thinking which 60” of a model that I want given that most models 1:1 are at least 72” tall.

What have we become?

"chop the legs off...!"

"No chop the head off ..!"

"no legs.. "

"no head...".

not very PC, I know...

So much for high minded ideals...

Preferred framerate will be 23.98, but if you have a project that warrants a different framerate (such as 23.98, 25 or 29.97) that can be part of the Portrait's appeal.
Creative offline editorial must take place in Premiere Pro. What else you do for visual effects or online is up to you.

Submission form will be released once the official Reduser NAB 2012 Party goes live next week.

Ok, so just to clarify we can comp shots and add visual effects? add some post processing to the footage? or do all effects need to be in camera?

I think that’s kind of the idea?

I don’t really know but I think they are keen to show that a lot off line effects are possible to generate higher res effects composite effects. Especially to blur the still and motion paradigm with the DSMC concept, not to mention to take on Medium format at the same time.

So for the ‘occupy” example one could start off with a face of a protestor , then “zoom out” and go to a mosaic’d large dynamic master image that keeps pulling out of all the protestor scenes (round the world) till each rectangular cell effectively becomes a giant textural pixel when further zoomed out becomes the original face (as all the cells are graded/toned accordingly) to recompose the original portrait. So such an effect could act as a visual metaphor to communicate the hopes of the individual and the “movement” as whole as being integral or almost holographic by nature. I.e. one small part contains the identity of the whole and vice versa. This is only an idea or an example, but I think it’s worth thinking about what 4k can really do with current tools like Adobe Premier. Rather than just shoot the same old stuff and present in a conventional manner but just at a higher res. Just having more pixels does not necessarily impart greater meaning. So I think with the suggested tools they are hoping that folks reach for something a bit more perhaps?

On the other hand it’s possible to do things in Premier I guess that have a “classic look” and are not so “gimmicky” perhaps. Obviously RED wants its imagery to look really good and in some cases with extended dynamic range that certain more subtle effects could be applied without things looking processed (perhaps). I have to admit I like the black and white grading idea.

Also I think they want to show that 4k is really doable without a giant rendering farm.

Cheers,

E

We should film mama Cioni's next birthday wishes in 4K Michael!! That was so fun at Dec Reducation 3 I think.... :)

What an amazing opportunity, to spread the 4K gospel.... if Red says lets put these friggin cameras to work people - then Im in!

LMAO!! ah, Tim. That really takes me back.....

I am excited to be announcing one of a series of big reveals for the upcoming Reduser NAB 2012 Party in Las Vegas. This announcement is important to get going now because it requires the help of you! We are proud to announce the first Reduser 4K Portrait Competition, an opportunity in which Redusers can create content and not only compete for exhibition space and prizes at the Reduser Party, but be displayed for all to see on the most advanced 4K technologies ever invented.
..

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

All participants are required to submit the below components on an unencrypted hard drive with an eSata connection in order to be considered for the competition:

1. Portraits must be finished in the Rec709 standard and submitted in 4K resolution (4096x2160 or 4096x2304 are acceptable)

Michael, does this mean that Red will project it with their laser projector that has a maxinum of 4096*2304 resolution, using redray?

He he,

Eric, the 60" is the DIAGONAL measurement of the monitor, and the monitor never really seats on the floor,
as it has a stand even when in Portrait mode, so that it is just few inches off the ground, so your 72" model will be head to head to it.

Besides, I didn't specified what type of models, I could be Shooting "HOBBIT GIRLS" ... ;)

Nice. Got any pictures? I'd love to see it!

Well, the monitor was actually at my California Place when you were there Joseph, remember that HUGE Box in the Garage, larger then the 3D TV we had on the leaving Room?

Pics, and actually a nice BTS Video of how to use EPIC form, A to "P", no, not to go to the Bathroom, "P" stands for "PRINT", and that will come shortly, can't show anything as of yet... ;)

But is this one: http://www.sharppromonitors.com/pnE601.html

B&H has a good price on it, which now is under 4k: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/666622-REG/Sharp_PN_E601_PN_E601_60_Full_Color.html

D’oh… You think I would know that… I guess I was distracted by a "Boxing Helena" type image… Now Hobbit Girls I see a new lurid genre here…

After the movie comes out we are going to see a lot of that kind of thing.

I’ll look at the specs, is it 3d capable at full res I wonder? Will check it out.

Ta.

No Eric, this is a 2D monitor.

No Eric, this is a 2D monitor.

Thanks for setting that straight;

It claims 6ms response time from grey to grey… not really 160 hz refresh but didn’t know if the monitor was multi-synch or not for frame sequential stereo or whether shutter glasses would work with that.

It seems finally after toooo many years waiting that competent full res dual passive monitors will/are available.

Will be interesting to finally see the s-3d from the RED laser projector that so far has rave reviews and has been described as a dynamic 3d Cibachrome.

I guess back to the competition…

Tick tock… (not a lot of time left)

It has made me take Premier more seriously to discover what it might actually be capable of.

Cheers,

Eric

As nobody is telling us, but you seem to have followed this. Is the 3d without glasses Eric?

Are sound effects laid in post acceptable if not sync, or possibly quasi-sync but abstract?

Paul-
This sounds fine to me. Just ensure that if someone were to watch the piece without sound it makes sense. But I completely understand that the portraits will be better when played with sound. So abstract sounds, music, etc., are all acceptable. What we're really trying to avoid here is components to the portrait that require narration or talking, to which viewers would not be able to hear in an art gallery.
