  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDucation

Thanks for all the good comments and feedback... Each time Michael and I get one of these classes off the ground and going, we are really motivated, seeing the level of learning and understanding on so many topics for production and post that touch the RED world...

The teaching/logistics team were fantastic, and the mix of students from all over made it a very interesting week.

Attended the Burbank REDucation, it was great, a wealth of knowledge from great instructors that live this every day. You covered a lot of bases, made the information easy to understand, and everyone was very accessible. Thanks to all involved!!!

Thanks for this review Mark on the separate thread you started, and for Steven, Tom, Stephen, Donald and the others that have chimed in here and in other places.

We are again motivated to drive the course forward into the future, keep improving on what and how we teach, etc.

(and trust me, Michael Cioni is the brains of the teaching, I'm just there for moral support and the occasional tidbit of inside info :-)

Is there a version of this happening in NYC anytime soon?

I wonder if I can get my boss to pay for this? A free holiday to LA would be nice!
Um, great, but PRICEY. $2500 for the week? That's a lot to learn about the gear we just bought from you. Before people jump on me...yes, in the scheme of things, it's not that much. But I have employees that would love to go to this and at $2500, they'll have to wait for the manual. :-) (and wait...and wait...)

Some photos from this weeks REDucation class... The gang working with the cameras and generally seeming to enjoy themselves :-) others in the class may want to post more shots they took with their cameras

By my count there are approximately 40 in the class. REDucation is, to say the least, a blast. Being on the studio lot and learning from Ted and Mark is a dream experience. Their insight into real world best production practices and on set etiquette is exactly what I was looking for when I signed up. I hold Apple Training Certifications in Final Cut Pro, Motion and Color so this is not my first training rodeo. My expectations have been surpassed exponentially, kudos to Createasphere for producing a stellar and comprehensive hands on training opportunity.

Not only do we get provided with extensive pdf presentations outlining workflows, color space concepts, exposure recommendations, etc. we also have hands on access to M & MX sensor RED Ones for total comparison. There is a dedicated stage with a great projector displaying presentations and we also get access to the 4K theater to screen and grade our footage. Icing on the cake is presentations from industry leaders like Michael Cioni from Light Iron Digital as well as awesome networking opportunities and presentations from vendors at the RED Community Day.

We've got two days left in the class and I feel like I've alreay gotten more than my money's worth and way more expert guidance and insight than I've seen provided in other training environments (naming no names, just the truth). We're not just learning what buttons to push or how to read a histogram; we're learning why we want to push the histo left or right in certain circumstances in order to preserve optimal RAW data for the grade; we're learning etiquette of communicating RED digital workflows and monitoring with experienced (and potentially skeptical or overwhelmed) DP's and AC's more comfortable shooting film.

I did have a couple of FXPHD RED courses under my belt and it's been beneficial to already have a handle on some of the basic and intermediate concepts ahead of time versus learning them on the fly. Hope this helps anyone trying to find out what to expect.

running budgets and logic for an NYC class and other intl. cities.

Questions for you all. If I can lower the price of the class by $1000 and make it a 3 day event rather than 5 day... who's in? We can't cover all that we cover in the 5 day class in 3 days of course, probably one hands on shoot day instead of 2, and less on the high end DI end finishing - but as the camera and the post production pathways get even more simple with each 6 month life cycle, I think we can teach the relevant areas in 3 days...

If separating camera and post, 3 days with a cheaper rate will be interesting for those who just want to learn to shoot with Red. Maybe another course strictly for post - like what they are doing for Storm etc.

Ted - a "simpler"course such as this would be ideal for those of us not oriented toward the full Hollywood / DI approach. Also, the lower price would be a lot more in line with the indie and/or corporate shooter aka, perhaps, the future Scarlet buyer. Even at that, if there were a more advanced course we could tag on later, that would be cool, too. This approach would be very interesting to me. :thumbup1:

good feedback so far... chewing on the format for next years REDucation classes... got some ideas and thoughts to run past everyone when it's ready.

If we could start some kind of email list of those truly interested in taking REDucation next year (3 day overview course for $1,500 and some 2 day special area of interest courses at $1,000, such as on set RED tech, DI for the RED, NLE editing for the RED, budgeting/producing for the RED, Cinematography for the RED, 3D for the RED, Hybrid Still/Motion photography for the RED etc.

Then I could gauge interest accordingly and start planning.

(what about a RED 101 class - specifically for people that have never ever shot RED before... any interest in that?)

I would like to see more of this. The 3D class really needed a 2nd day. :)

I am in for classes in 2011. Would be slick to have different levels of classes and different focus. For instance I am a shooter but my assistant could careless on shooting and more on the file process.

Looking forward to it!

Peace
