REDucation 2012 Dates and Info

Josh-
Hopefully some of the REDucation alumni will agree, but in the post class we spend ample time discussing techniques and tools for every budget. In fact, it is extremely rare that I discuss workflows that can only be used on big budgets! The truth is, the RED workflows that I employ are used on the smallest and largest movies all the same. The tricks and techniques that I teach know no difference between a webisode and a 3D feature. Honestly REDucation is not designed for a specific "class" of creatives. Our curriculum is truly based on the belief that democratization and optimal efficiency can be achieved by every user regardless of their budget or location. Scaleable workflows along with a full understanding of color science and RED manipulation costs you nothing in practice, which is why we are able to satisfy the needs of every RED user.

Hopefully some other alum will be able to confirm our techniques effectively transcend the boundaries of budgets. For the do-it-yourself-er, REDucation 3D and the post course will have a long-lasting, positive affect on your work.

Got to quote Michael here and agree that everything is based around workflows from low/no budgets right through to high end. The workflows are the same process, just scaled based on the size of your project. What Michael teaches is best practice that gives you the grounding to then adapt as and where you can/have too.

I can't recommend REDucation enough to those of you who are looking for a total immersive experience. Its a place where 99% of your RED questions will be answered by a team of professionals that use RED everyday. If you want to understand RED operations, workflow, techniques, equipment, how too, case studies, etc there is nothing better.

Just my thoughts - its benefited me, and I'm still learning as things adapt.

:))

Sergio,

Reducation is not only some of the best training available but the networking with the other students is priceless.

Since I work for a government organization I'm always having to travel on a budget way below my tastes. Here is the hotel where I stay when I visit Red Studios Hollywood. Rodeway Inn, 777 N. Vine Street, Los Angeles, CA. I would not give the place more than two stars but you can get a room for less than $100 a night. The best part is that the hotel is just a block away from Red Studios so I don't bother with a car. You spend all day in class, then go out for dinner with classmates so you are only sleeping there. I have the advantage of flying into Burbank Airport. The taxi ride is about $32. I don't know how much it would cost from LAX.

If you need any other information just let me know.

John Reinert

Thanks John! Already PM'd Brian and would really like your input. Will PM you. If I go to this course I'm talking about, including air tickets and accomodation, something on the lines of 5000 + USD. Have to see if my current finances allow me to make it- that Epic package I ordered gave it a very, very big beating. Would love to attend it.

Another question: You guys are having a world tour, possibly visiting Asia, either a Chinese city or Hong-Kong. Any possibility of a Reducation with the same in depth program during the World Tour? This would really help!

Oh man, I might be shooting a project during those February dates.. UGGHGH, now I'm wondering if I should drop it to attend this...

I'm seriously thinking of going. Is there a limited number of seats? I want to do the REDucation and post course. February 27th - March 2nd. Gotta come up with the scratch though.

TedRed:

How can you tease us like that? Post the NYC REDucation dates (AWESOME!) but without the ability to register for them? :(

Hello everyone, after a highly successful run of classes in 2011, the last few really focused on EPIC and Scarlet shooting, and viewing 4k via RedCineX Pro in our 4k theater at RED studios Hollywood, we are getting lots more requests for information and upcoming dates for our 2012 Classes.

We've decided to add another class in late February in Hollywood, again focused on hands on camera training and a heathy mix of Production techniques, optimizing the images you create, and moving them into Post Production. This time with a new twist (wouldn't be RED if we didn't experiment and evolve)

After the Main 3 Day class, in addition to the advanced post class for those with that focus, we are also going to run a "put into practice what you learned" workshop. 2 extra days of shooting a real project, moving it into prep for editorial, doing the edit and screening it on the big movie screen. For those that work in parts of the business that don't get a chance to really exercise their creative skills just for the pure fun and "learning on the job" We think this will be a really interesting addition to REDucation.

For those setting their schedules here are the dates and locations:

REDucation Hollywood - February 27th - March 2nd - location RED Studios Hollywood
REDucation NYC - May 21-25th - location TBD
REDucation UK - Sept 3rd-5th - location Pinewood Studios London
REDucation Hollywood - December 3rd - December 7th - location RED Studios Hollywood

Marcos and Iain,

We need to finalize our location in NY before we open registration - UK registration will open in a week or so.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your reply - love your work!!

I paid for a real smart friend of mine to attend the December RE with the concept that he could assist me in workflow and color correction processing. His takeaway from the event was:
1. Michael is a fantastic presenter and extremely successful at producing amazing features
2. A fair amount of the discussion was centered on big feature film budget hardware and workflow
3. About 20% of the time was spent on REDcine-X and the smaller scale topics

I understand RED's target market is very large budget features but with the introduction of Scarlet would it not be helpful to have maybe an online course that is for little people like myself who don't have unlimited resources or who can travel to LA on specific dates?

From what I can tell, REDcine-X is undocumented so there is no way for me to time effectively teach myself this critical component of the RED Raw workflow. There seems to be a great deal of power in this program but also redundant controls for what I guess is different workflow styles or habits.

NIK software is a company who I recommend to every photographer I meet because they have amazing online / self serve courses that allow me to fully utilize their products. I would love for RED to bring an Epic to Light Iron and film Michael going through a small scale operator workflow and through every button of REDcine-X so I know to fully exploit the critical functions of the program. Like a 4hr course that is centered on producing a simple 30sec commercial spot where I can download the actual sample R3D files to work along with Michael.

That would be cool and very time/cost effective for all involved.

Just an idea

Hello Michael,

How much would you pay me for a 4 hour training video of every button in REDCine-X Pro?
(just kidding;-)

If the reviews of REDucation Dec '11 suggest we need to spend more time in RCXPro, then I would be happy to do it. I love the program and use it on a dozen projects, 7 days a week. Full knowledge of RCX makes my life easier, and will make yours easier, too.

Using the case studies of large features is a good technique for the class because it establishes common ground. But close-watching students will note that the information in these case studies are all applicable to every job. I find that learning from a large project makes for a better scale down to a smaller one. That said, none of what we teach at REDucation is exclusive to specific markets, big or small. -So goes the mantra of RED in general, which truthfully has not identified large features as their target market. But let me ask you this because I doubt you are the only person with this concern:
What components of the RED world (post or production) would you like to see specifically addressed that would make the program more enticing to you?

m

Iain / Daniel

Hope to see you at Pinewood in September. If last years course was anything to go by, this years course will be... EPIC (Oh I had to say it!!!).

:))

What components of the RED world (post or production) would you like to see specifically addressed that would make the program more enticing to you?

Take a typical commercial project (a :30 car ad for example) from beginning to end with no more than a Mac tower, $3K monitor, off the shelf drive array, REDcine-X and Premiere.
First challenge: start with specifying a total post production system that costs less than $20K - hardware/software
How do I effectively color correct my R3D's within REDcine-X - avoiding stand alone grading $olutions.
HDRx in REDcine-X (I have been told I have to use a 3rd party program to fully utilize this feature in post)
Epic audio - low cost 2nd sound solutions and how to best sync in post.
Economical data management workflow from acquisition to archive - RED files are big . . . real big.
RED integration with Premiere - tips and tricks.
Output and best compression methods for Vimeo etc.
. . . and just a bunch of stuff looking at the world from a (young) Robert Rodriguez using RED point of view.

Oh and . . . all the buttons in REDcine-X . . . ALL OF THEM!!! ; - )

Great to see all the responses and interest in our 2012 Classes. This is the best motivation for us, as we learn a tremendous amount from each time we run the class. We are always thinking and looking at ways to refine and deliver the benefits of a week of really immersive learning, lots hands on with the gear with our expert team of teachers, that all have many many RED gigs under their belts, and the ability to shoot and screen that material in 4k in the same day. What Michael refers to rings very true to me, we use all kinds of reference points to teach, the end goal is showing how fantastically scalable the shooting and post concepts and practices are with RED, from doing everything "homebrew" style with very limited resources on small projects all the way to the largest and highest profile motion picture work on the planet. We show it, do it, review it and all learn from it. Bottom line, it's always a lot of fun and worthwhile for the students and staff.

Looking forward to the next class!

+ Ted

. . . from doing everything "homebrew" style with very limited resources on small projects all the way to the largest and highest profile motion picture work on the planet.

How about offering a separate "homebrew" track for those with limited budgets? When you get 50 industry guys in a room chances are the conversation and teaching will drift upward to the most sophisticated users since that is where RED's target is . . . and we all love to dream about how maybe we can someday be Peter J. I would very much like to attend a Scarlet scale, REDcine-X post processing event. Please, please offer it as a part of RE.

RED should seriously consider doing a course DVD set; we can't all fly to CA and take off for a week. It would be nice do be able to do so, but by making these techniques available to the world would democratize REDRAW workflow a lot more and a lot quicker; isn't that the objective of RED to begin with?

Sites like Lynda.com have a ton of courses for specific workflows. It would be killer if RED can launch a similar official DVD course set, or online course, and charge accordingly; I guarantee you that something like this would SELL LIKE CRAZY!

Online like Lynda - DVD's are out of date as soon as you print them. And like I do with Lynda - I would gladly pay a monthly subscription fee to gain the current, ongoing and dynamic knowledge it provides. This could be a revenue center for RED.

Completely agree with the monthly subscription idea! RED??
