  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's flaws...

that canon PL glass at $6800 a prime isn't cheap. red PL primes are really really good. I don't understand why people aren't using them more other than snobbishness and weight concerns. but optically they are fantastic

I beg to differ. Scarlet 2/3 was a curiosity to me, basically competing with the prosumer Sonys and Panasonics in the $6K price range. How's Red, with 400 people, going to hit with companies with tens of thousands of manufacturers? Red is about quality, not quantity. The Epic S became Scarlet, which supports Red's marketing posture that 2K is not enough. I wasn't even considering Scarlet, now I am.

I think you're both right and wrong.
I think Scarlet was RED's first major failure - they were not able to manufacture it at the desired quality for under 10k dollars. So they renamed the Epic-S to Scarlet-X in a face saving operation.

The Scarlet-X makes very good sense. It is what the computer business has been doing all along. Making cheaper systems from factory reject parts is what the Celeron and Duron systems were all about. It is good for those who want an inexpensive cinema-style camera, and for those who want a high quality motion-capable still camera.

Unfortunately, that leaves a big hole for those who wanted exactly what the old Scarlet Cinema specification was - a camera optimized for 16mm or 3/4" lenses with absolutely no compromises and a really good range of speeds. For around the price of the new Scarlet-X that would have been a perfect camera for many users. I just think it was a too difficult project, there is a reason why Apple are making their gadgets in a Chinese sweatshop rather than in California. Alas, the only alternative is the Ikonoskop. It records raw, but with way too low resolution.

Too low resolution is also the biggest problem with Scarlet-X windowed as a 3/4" camera. Besides, it has the extra bulk of the Epic and significantly lower frame rates than the planned Scarlet.

I certainly never saw Scarlet as competing with any prosumer video cameras. It would have been a good deal even costing 50% more than the not very comparable Sony or Panasonic offerings. It is a big problem that nobody is making a no compromise raw-recording 3-4k small-sensor camera.

Sleep is over-rated. You can't get anything done when you sleep.

Did I mention how much I like Spotify?

Jim

Sleep is definitely over-rated. It comes with the territory. I just want to say thanks for the awesome news on Scarlet. Man, you guys really stepped it up going with s35 w/5K stills and 4K motion. Can't wait to be a Scarlet owner (hopefully, very soon). About Spotify - I can't get enough of it. To those that don't have Spotify, you have no idea what you're missing. Thanks again Jim and Red Team!

I will fly all the way from Mozambique for the factory tour. And that means for me a minimum of 4 flights and 28 hours...

Here comes a bit of shameless self-promotion but...

http://open.spotify.com/album/53KZOi86yq4k92Gg7ooFsC will take you to some of my band's music on Spotify. We're called Strand.

It may not be everyone's cup (electronic, underground) but it's funky, melodic and, at times, brilliant, especially the last two songs. Seriously...it's worth a listen and it'll only take 20 minutes.

At any rate, visual representations of this and future music will be brought to you courtesy of Scarlet-X.

I don't question Red's execution. And someone would have to be completely insane to question Red's vision. However, I will say this. I'm in Stage 2, and it looks like because of Scarlet, Stage 2 hasn't moved this week, so I'm pretty anxiously awaiting that email as my number is almost up. So keep up the good work! Sometimes people get carried away with impatience and I can understand that. I really want my camera! I can't wait to have an Epic of my very own! If I could common law marry it, I probably would :)

Sorry to disagree, Andrew.

During all this week my Bomb Squad Rep has been working in my stage 2 EPIC... I think probably today they are absolutely over pressured 'cause the Scarlet, but not before that. AT least that's my experience.

Cheer!

Definitely understand your impatience, but I wouldn't base it off of the Stage-2 thread in the forums as it's unofficial and people's participation in it seems to be sporadic at best. I'd bet the lull in updates on that has more to do with users paying more attention to Scarlet than the thread rather than RED losing focus on the Stages. Jim and Jarred say we can expect an update today or tomorrow, which means around 4am tonight on RED's work schedule ;) I'd hold off any judgement until then.

I'm not pissed or anything. I'm just really excited to get my cam. I feel like it did get slower this week. That stage 2 thread does give a lil bit of reliable info. Mainly it shows you the general camera number range that they're up to. Last week there was a crazy amount of progress made, the week before that as well. If it had been the same kind of volume as those weeks, I'd def have gotten my email by now. Red is only so big still and they just made an announcement that will get them more orders than they've ever had before. I think it stands to reason that they'd be pretty damn busy over there. Hehe, I'll def be checking the threads constantly until I get my email. I've shot with the Epic a bunch now and I love it so hard. I just can't wait to have my very own!
