  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi All.

Have had a bit of a trawl, but couldn't find any info.

Assuming a spec'ed up machine and hardware / RAID etc, what kind of speeds could I expect to be able to render R3D's to DNX HD ? I assume using a redrocket is the fastest way ?

Damn near realtime, If your harddrives can keep up (assuming you mean 1080).

Well the rocket is always doing a full debayer so it's always having to parse the full 4k (or whatever) file for each frame. So there is an inherent limit on how fast that info can get to the card. I have not done the tests here yet be able to say what the performance is like with SD. I'll see what I can do.

Actually in RedCine-X 158 you can choose the debayer resolution just like in software rendering. But I am not sure yet if there is a speed difference.

That only affects software rendering.
Rocket will always do full debayer up to about 32fps for 4k.
Transcoding is dependent on the CPU but generally is between 24 and 32 fps depending on the cpu and the codec (h.264 is slower than realtime because it's very processor intensive)

Righto so it could be faster than real time if properly speced ?

DNxHD is already a real time encode as experienced with the Mojo DX hardware which is I/O and all encoding is done via the CPU. So depending on how fast the decode side of the file is done, it will be at least real time. We have seen faster than real time with MetaFuze depending on debayer settings and the like. Lots of factors to how fast a transcode can happen; decode, encode, drives, CPU speed, etc.

We've been doing some tests at 1080p/23.976 DNxHD 175 8-bit and getting around .89 times real time. That's from a red drive via firewire 800 to an internal raid, 3 7200 RPM drives. That's using a 2x2.66 MacPro with 8gigs of ram.

Any chance on having 1/4 debayer for 720 clips for 2 or 3 time realtime for offline purposes? This would be great for say shooting a reality tv show where you are generating 15 hours of footage a day.

Rocket can only do a full debayer.

What kind of Speed can a Rocket do with Prores 422 1080p offlining has anyone done this and what are the results?

The last test I did for DNxHD and ProRes was a several versions ago, so things may have changed, but DNxHD was 30% faster for same files on same system.

Just ran another test and for all intents and purposes, they transcode at the same rate. For a 01:10:00 clip, 01:26:00 for DNxHD and 01:28:00 for ProRes.

That helps me get my head around how much the rocket would speed up our offlining. Compared to qmaster with 4 computers this is really fast. A very viable solution.

For offlining aren't you better off NOT to use the Rocket, and do a quarter debayer in Clipfinder, which can do multiple tasks at once? Works faster for me...

We ran the same 10 minute clip of 4k 16:9 23.98 footage of a reasonably complex image, with color correction, and got the following times: (the full test is on the user group under RED One)

4k Full Debayer ProRes 4:4:4:4 = 47 minutes = 4.7x real time
4k Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 48 minutes = 4.8x real time
2k Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 13 minutes = 1.3x real time
2k Full Debayer ProRes LT = 12 minutes = 1.2x real time
1080p Full Debayer ProRes HQ = 11 minutes = 1.1x real time
1080p Full Debayer ProRes LT = 11 minutes = 1.1x real time
