just saw the new production model of the redrock mattebox today at cinegear expo.. its siiiiiiiccccckkkkkkk. really well done.. like an arri!!..
it was black too:) unlike the NAB demo version. It now has a swing away box and well done rotating filter trays. and its not flimsy!
still 500 bucks!!! also tried out the redrock followfocus.. the new and improved one since the last time i tried it out.. honestly guys.. its realllly good. especially for the price!!!. im amped

Thanks for the report Zakaree. I have my mind set on both that Mattebox and the improved FF. Good thing I have a reservation on the MB. If this mattebox proves to be the right stuff for RED users, then Curt's gonna have to reconsider that $1000+ price point on his.

Yeah thanks for the update Zakaree. Some accessories such as a mattebox still comes under budgetary consideration for me. There are some things you can scrimp on slightly to begin with and others which you simply cannot. If their MB turns out to be functional and useful for $500 then I'd probably be happy to use it, if only for a stop gap till I can upgrade to a top of the line Chrosziel or ARRI in the future.

It'll be interesting to see how Curt's stands up though, everyone has high expectations and if it as good or possibly better than a Chrosziel or ARRI I'll have no qualms about pitching up $1000 for that instead.

At the end of the day, it's nice to know there are other more affordable options coming onto the market other than having to take the 2nd hand option, and with a few thousand red one owners in the pipeline many of these will have success no doubt.

Sounds interesting... The bits I've seen of the RR MB (the white one they were showing pre-NAB) made me think it's a complete piece of junk. Some of the reviews I saw of prototypes were less than flattering. So hopefully it has been much improved. I keep hearing/reading that their new FF is way better. But having owned their FF a while back, I still feel burned and I'm not sure what to think just yet. I have reservations for both the MB and FF units just in case they turn out to be worth-while, but I'm rather skeptical. I'm also hoping that Curt's MB turns out as good as the MB20 (or better!). I'll gladly pay twice as much as a RedRock if I can get a product that's at least twice as good.

My money is on Curt Von B. Red Rock has always had crap build quality and even though you are saying its sick, I highly doubt it. Zak, have you worked with professional quality matteboxes such as an Arri or a Chrosziel? They are basically bulletproof. Based on the finish quality of the Red motor and the Mirius I would easily write a check to CVB for $2000 for the right materials and features.

Yes I have worked with both. I like arri better.. but seeing as how i do not plan to shoot any semi or fully automatic weapons at my mattebox, I think ill be fine with the redrock!

The version at NAB sucked! so please dont think im talkn about the same version. This has an arri mb style. My only iffyness goes to the french flag which was a cheap plastic... but they told me the final version would be aluminum.

this is what a mattebox does for me...
I can use my filters.. and I can block out any stray sun rays!

I dont need an ARRI or Chorsziel name to prove anything. as long as its not a thin plastic toy ill be happy.. and for 500 bucks you can bet I will get my redrock MB. no need to spend more than I should have too imho

I'm still skeptical... Once bitten (last year's FF), twice shy.

But if it's not the same MB they were showing at NAB and the weeks before, then they're already heading in a better direction.

Hi Everyone

A brief note before we post up some specifics and pictures on the microMattebox. The most important piece of news for Red users is that post-NAB, we decided to redesign the mattebox as a completely cinema-capable matte box. Among the new features:
- supports up to 156mm lens diameter (which means Red lenses)
- supports filter stages from 4x4" up to 5x6" and the typical sizes inbetween
- all stages rotate, and do so independently
- a flatter shade for wide angle lenses
- swing away arm and rod mounted

the base configuration target price is still $500 which includes three filter stages.

lordnumberzero, I have noticed several of your posts are rather disparaging of Redrock. I would sure appreciate it if you dropped me a line brian@redrockmicro.com so I can better understand your specific concerns. Build quality has always been something that people have pointed out about Redrock products, so I don't know if you received something that was an early build, a bad unit, etc. but I would like to know more.

Cheers

Brian

But if it's not the same MB they were showing at NAB and the weeks before, then they're already heading in a better direction.

The new Red Rock mattebox seems to literally be a reverse engineered MB20.

The finished product was said to come in a black aluminum finish with 4x4 / 4x5 / 5x6 swappable, stackable and rotating trays; meaning you can have 3-4 fully rotating 5x6 trays if needed.

The design seemed very solid and on point. I'd take the Red Rock over a way over priced Chrosziel any day.

I was at Cinegear too today, met the folks - very nice people! They also had a great little prototype rig involving a HV20 mounted to something that looks kinda like the Red cage. If I hadn't just put together something like that the hard way myself I would have offered them money for it on the spot ;) BTW are you guys partnering with Zacuto now? I saw a very nice rig setup using your M2 at their booth.

My trusted DP back in South Africa described the Chrosziel as "pretty dodgy and plastic looking but does the job", haha. If the Redrock fits into that category, we are good. For a lot less money, yaay. Let's face it, the improvements they've made to it are really impressive.

Otherwise, it looks like we have an order of things with each being the best in their categories:
$500 - Redrock
$? - CVB's mystery one (he stated it would be under Arri price), coming out later in the year though
$3200+ (plus extras) - Vocas (I checked it out at Cinegear - it was very nice and lightweight and had things like eyebrows, anti-reflection stage, etc)
$4000+ - Arri MB20 (nice but heavier), Arri MB14 (nice big filter sizes but heavier still)

I am not sure about Petroff and Cavision... anyone think I have written of Chrosziel too quickly? It's just that for the price I might as well get the Arri or Petroff.

Brian, I forgot to ask, what is the largest square filter size you can take now? 5.65 x 5.65? And round filter?

This is an average setup that I am looking at:

1. rotating circular pola (round filter?)
2. 4x5.6 schneider varicon
3. 5.6x5.6 grad (needs to be able to move up and down

By the way, how much do you predict your matte box to weigh?

Cheers

Hi Bruce

Nice to meet you as well. Zacuto was already selling rigs around our M2 adapter, and they wanted to offer it as part of their setup. Same adapter.

Again just to be clear, the microMattebox is primarily machined aluminum. It's a stackable filter stage design (from 1 to as many stages as practical) with the largest filter being 5"x6". We will also offer filter stages for round filters as well (though that will come later).

I can't say on weight just as yet.

And finally on pics, dang guys :) All we ask is a few hours of sleep and some time to snap a photo or two. It will be there soon

Cheers

Brian

Haha, okay, no more comparisons to plasticy Chrosziels then.

Gotcha. Can you move those filters up and down? I am just thinking about a grad filter... where I might want to adjust its vertical position.

As far as pics go, I snapped one of your prototype and sent it on to Mike and Matt (www.hdforindies.com and www.freshdv.com). Freshdv just tested a bunch of your stuff, didn't they? Did you send them your matte box?

Yep -the filters can be moved vertically and all stages rotate, so you can position that grad where it needs to be.

The original proto (with the proto white plastics) is pretty much irrelevant now. When you see the new pics you'll see

the FresHDV guys did do a recent ff shootout including redrock, but not the microMB

hey brian.. was that you i was talkn too the other day? im the younger guy (24). i was talkn to you about the mattebox and the little hv20 rig. i said that i would definatly be putting your MB on my red...
anyways.. thanks for the hat!

Zakaree, you are 24 and own a Red? Good grief! How on earth do you afford it? When I was 24 I didn't even have a credit card.

Next time, we both need to ambush Brian together... I wonder how many other Reduser.net people were at CineGear? I met Ketch there, great chap.

Brian's quite the Spartan, I think we may need to triple team him in order to get 'em down!

BTW, is anyone attending the lighting workshop at Mole Richardson today?
