  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

By CC I take it you mean color correction? If so, that is hardly practical insofar as it will take a long time to render .RED files and they won't be editable thereafter. Sorry if I assumed wrong about "CC."

The projector has passthrough for your normal D.I. equipment outputs.. you are not forced to use .RED files on the projector, so yes you can use it for color work.

Thanks for the correction, Jarred.

No worries.. not your fault.

I would like to extend a very big thanks to Jarred Land, Hugo & Ted for hosting a really cool showing of the REDRAY and giving all of us a great experience today at RED STUDIOS. I really appreciate it and it was awesome to meet Ted and hear from from him the upcoming great things that this company is doing.

Sounds like you guys had a ball in the themepark. Great

It was fun, I was able to stop by the RED store and pick up a 1.8 RED STATION. They have an AWESOME show room!

If this doesn't change things... I don't know what will.

Wish I could have been there. Still looking forward to watching my first 4k footage on the big screen. Of course I saw an underwater test shot of Pawel's underwater housing a Band Pro on their 4k loaner and it was one shot. Looking forward to sharing 4k images with my community with the release of the RED projector. Movie night will never be the same!

Did I misunderstand something? I thought that REDRAY is able to play R3D files also?

I seem to remember that that was part of the initial spec.

I checked the posts again and couldn't find anything anymore. I am pretty sure I even posted about it ... maybe the little forum elves did something about it ;)

I now assume that there was a typo switching RED and R3D.... or I just plain misread RED for R3D.

I also remember reading .r3d on the spec Sheet. Now poof!

I was thinking more way back when the redray was originally announced. But it is a bit like the 2/3", the "3d" scarlet and some other good ideas that have given in over time. Methinks.

But I guess one could use the same element that sits in the epic/scarlet to drive playback, if one wanted.
That is a real rocket in there... Wish i could somehow use the camera as an editing server...

sorry guys.. Seems like a bit of a disconnect. There is no water cooling in the projector head.. and there are really, really big fans that move alot of air silently, there are no small fans.

And about the lenses.. the "home" projector does not use interchangeable lenses.. it just has one. The big boy projectors ( theater, large venue, pro install ) do have swappable lenses.

I'd like to note that there's a rumor floating (on another forum) that the home version of the laser does not come with a lens at all, and that it's going to add $5,000 to the basic $10,000 cost of the projector. If there's only one, non-interchangeable lens, that sounds like bad info. Can you clear that up?

Also, another rumor is that the native on/off contrast of the Red laser is low, under 2,000:1. I noted a couple of posts in the last few pages which talked about the demo that just happened at the Red studios, in which references were made to "milky blacks" not being a problem, and that participants preferred the laser projector to the Sony 4K projector that was used while the laser is down. Again, this would seem to fly in the face of such rumors.

I know, you shouldn't feel in any way compelled to respond to rumors. For the record, what I'd love to do is hop on a plane from St. Louis when the home projector is closer to final production, so I can see it in the Red studios personally, with my own "test" materials (commercial Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and my own 3D footage - low-end hobbyist grade though it is ). I don't rely on rumors to make purchase decisions like this, and I'm excited enough about it that I'd make the trip. I have an ex-student who works for Sony animation, so I could pay his family a visit and kill two birds with one stone. Would it be possible for me to set up such a demonstration when the projector is almost finished?

Regarding the lens: how much more clear could Jarred be? The home projector has a built in lens.

And coming on here with 2 posts and citing "rumors" that this entire thread would negate, when you have never laid eyes on the output from this projector, is hardly going to win you any friends. :-(

Many of us were lucky enough to see a protoype of the Red Laser (utilizing a prototype of the .RED codec) personally at NAB. RED used it to project "LOOM" in 2k in 3D on a 40 or 50' screen (unfortunately there were engineering issues that prevented RED from screening it in 4K in 3D at that time). Nonethless, in a word, the 2K 3D was AMAZING. And, it is even more amazing to now learn from Jarred that LOOM was screened using NOT the full 2.5 MB/s of the .RED code ... but at 1.5MB/s! I have no doubts that the 4K projectors will be "game changers" ... like everything else from RED.
