  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

We really need more news about the red laser projector. Dont forget that we where told at NAB that it would be shipping this year....

Can someone tell me why everyone is ordering RedRay right now? I want one but what is the point until a 4k display is available? Was there a red projector announcement I missed?

Or can we start playing with OdeMax network in 1080p until we have 4k?

There are 4K displays available right now.. Sony has a cheap(er) home 4k projector, Toshiba is shipping a 4K panel, LG is shipping a 4K panel, and Sony is shipping a 4K panel. There are a few off brands that are about to come to market... and of course our Laser projector which is just finishing off certification and hits theaters first in the first couple months of the new year.

Meaning we'll even allow the major studios to distribute their stories too, as long as they're 4K.

So, if I'm not mistaken though, since the new RRencoder in REDCINE-X will encode any of the popular file based formats such as DPX, tiff etc to the .RED encoded format for playback, than in theory since this is all reliant on the Theatre having a REDRAY player which can upscale HD content to 4K than is this a quality control on behalf of ODEMAX?
More to the point, could you distribute a 1080p or 2K master through ODEMAX encoded into the .RED codec for delivery to the home which is currently still all 1080p viewing?

So,

While we wait for suitable, and affordable, 4K displays to appear, can we hook up 4 x 1080p monitors to the RR and "watch" 4K that way?

Rudi, you can already do that with the RR. Albeit, only for you RAW footage.

Is it true the Player can up-rez HD files?

EDIT: Never mind. I see it does.

Knowing a view session audience size ?

Knowing a view session audience size ?

I think I'm understanding this right, a fantastic way to distribute/sell your 4K creation to people.
I have a question:

If the viewing price is, say $5 for someone in a living-room, great.
But how do I know if they are actually showing it in a 100 seat auditorium ?

Honor system, or is there a Red 'eye ball counter device' that makes sure they are not cheating ? :yesnod:

Can you assign one of the HDMI outs to feed the Sony XBR 84-900X panel or the ES1000 home projector. Both are able to display 4,096 x 2,160 at 23.98fps and 3,840 x 2,160 at 29.97fps via a single HDMI 1.4a cable.

Can we use 1, 2 or 4 HDMI streams depending on the devices we are interfacing with...

Do you have a list of tested/approved 4K displays?

Congrats, BTW :-)

Cheers - #19

yup.. or just one 1080p display, RR will downscale to 1080p for you. It kinda defeats the purpose.. but at least lets you do start making content ( if you are a " producer " ) and getting the whole system sorted.

After reading up on this, I gotta congratulate you guys.

The scope of the Redray is much larger than I initially thought or even hoped for.

We have a VW1000ES sony projector hooked up to REDRAY with a single HDMI at the studio playing 4k. It works out of the box. We don't have the XBR panel yet but we have the LG and the Toshiba and another panel. of note, the american and EU Toshiba panels wont display proper 4K yet.. they are waiting for a firmware update.

Jarred, how about a bit of more info regarding the laser projector?

Jarred,

I was wondering if you could tell us the compression speed of the .red format vs. h.264 on the same computer?

I think I saw you are using the GPU for compressing, does it need Cuda or OpenCL?

Will my Red Rocket be of any use to speed up compression?

Do you guys ever sleep?

Thanks for giving me a reason to let my Bolex, dvx, hvx, 7d collect dust on the shelf and to finally feel like there is an alternative to silver based recording.

I'm wrapping hy head around the massive positive impact for small theaters - however - something is nagging at me ...

I put my film up - let's say I have the choice to establish VOD/download price at $10.00 ($7 for me $3 for ODEMAX) ...

How am I protected from a small theatre - (think art house) - from just buying a player and downloading for $10 - and then charging for tickets for 300 people to watch in their theatre - and no paying me anything. I just get $7 and they sold 300 tickets.

Jarred you must have missed my question about AUDIO formats for the RED RAY.

What does it support? DTS-hd true-HD?

Any shots of the On screen UI?

Maybe when you register you have to identify yourself in some way? Or when you buy it? Obviously there is a way around it, but it would imply lying and gaming the system.
