  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY 4K versions of Tattoo, Loom, and the new Dragon Reel

Can something like the torrent site (or similar) be accessible straight from the RR unit?

Torrent is built into the backend... so if someone wanted to write some software or interface for REDRAY it could access it.

Jarred, as being a developer and thinking about building a platform to share my materials, i definitifely entertain the possibility to create the needed software to serve a bigger community..
is there any infos available on how such a torrent-system has to be created that the RR unit can consume its data?

This sounds like a fantastic chance to demonstrate the benefits of the .RED format, and it's ability to transport cinema quality media over current internet infrastructure.

I don't have a RedRay Player / 4k projector at this point - but do very much want this distribution mechanism to get a foothold.

There are probably a number of open source starting points which I would expect make coding this more straightforward:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_BitTorrent_clients

+) Might be difficult for me to write & test without a player.

+) If any of the code does not 'perform' - I might be able to help.

If I had confidence that I would be able to add a Red PJ onto this (even in 2015) - I would far be more motivated to make the client rock.

I assume the bittorrent-client is part of the RR-Player's firmware.. so the interesting part would be how the player can access a web-application to retrieve the torrent-file and what kind of client the player contains... as i also dont have a RR-Player i can't test it for myself, so some infos from RED are needed to create the server component..

Jarred, is there any official REDRAY SDK available ?

Yes please consider releasing the SDK to the public, like the REDLINK SDK. I'm pretty sure this would give the REDRAY-platform a good boost.
Torrent already built into the backend. Cool! :)

Time for 4KTube or 4Kimeo. :)

Will these only work on REDray or did I miss the .red codec download (I thought the codec was free or something)?

One idea, maybe allready mentioned but would it not be super easy to set up a redray bittorent site preferably under www.red.com/torrents/
or such and then just do what the pirates do. download and chair bandwith.
I think many here got good internet, We got a server that runs with 1k Mb/s both directions, so if everyone interested keep a little redray torent archive those files would be super fast to download. and everyone can share their file in something better than piss poor vimeo quality.

I'd second this... with the international nature of the user base I think torrents would be a very efficient way to share content. I've got a server online that I could set up to seed content - would be nice to see torrents (fantastic tech) engaged in more postive ways than for pirating the latest Game of Thrones episode.

Is there an SDK available for the RedRay?

I'm at work creating a system for torrenting footage to redray players..
but so far any questions about support from RED resulted in no feedback..

I'd guess we'd be on our own on the development side... which is not genearlly a big deal if there's some basic information to get started. It's not even really clear how the system is architected... built on Linux hopefully? Clearly they've got a gui that would need to be extended to add the torrent access component, would need some basic info on that too... and connectivity - How do you connect remotely (hopefully everything wouldn't need to be done via sneakernet). There's an HTTP server running on the box but it returns a blank page, SSH and Telnet are not running. I've written a lot of networking software in prior lives, a simple torrent interface to a .RED targeted site should be pretty straightforward.
